Chapter 177 - Chapter 177: Mephisto and the Dark Forces

Huang Wen had barely settled back into his rhythm at the gym when the sensory link with his new clone spiked. It wasn't pain—the Shadowkhan Legion Leader didn't really feel pain in the biological sense—but it was a sudden, oppressive weight, like the atmosphere had turned into lead.

Outside, in a quiet, tree-lined suburb of New York where the clone had been scouting for a discreet secondary base, the air began to shimmer with a sickly, sulfurous heat. The "man" now known as Chen Long stopped in his tracks. He didn't breathe, didn't sweat, and didn't panic. He simply stood there, a vessel of pure shadow, watching an old man in a pristine, sharp-cut suit materialize from the afternoon haze.

The old man looked like a retired billionaire or perhaps a high-end lawyer, leaning on a cane with a silver topper. He looked benevolent, but his eyes were like two dying embers in a furnace.

"Pardon me, young man," the elder said, his voice smooth as aged whiskey. "I couldn't help but notice you. You have a certain... quality. A fragrance, if you will. What do they call you in this bustling little world?"

"Chen Long," the clone replied. The voice was hollow, echoing from a throat made of solidified darkness. Huang Wen, sitting miles away, narrowed his eyes as he channeled more consciousness into the link. He recognized that aura. It was ancient, greedy, and smelled of charred souls. "And you are?"

"Mephisto," the man smiled, and for a second, his teeth seemed just a bit too sharp. "I'm a traveler, a collector of sorts. I've seen many things in the infinite reaches of the cosmos, Mr. Chen. I've seen the abyss of the Dark Dimension, the chaotic fires of the Muspelheim, and the cold voids of the Niffleheim. But you... you are a flavor I haven't tasted before. That energy inside you is remarkably pure. It's dark, yes, but it's clean. Not a hint of rot or madness. Tell me, where does a soul like yours find such a vintage?"

In the underground base, Huang Wen's heart skipped a beat. Mephisto. The Prince of Lies himself.

He knew the lore. Mephisto was a bottomless pit of curiosity when it came to power. The demon lord wasn't just being polite; he was scouting. He was looking for a new "Dark Space," a dimension he could colonize. He'd seen what Dormammu had done—an ordinary sorcerer who stumbled into a dark realm and consumed it until he became a god-like ruler. Mephisto was hungry for his own version of that success. To him, Chen Long wasn't a person; he was a map to a treasure he hadn't looted yet.

"Recognize the name, do you?" Mephisto's smile widened as he stepped closer, his shadow stretching unnaturally long on the pavement. "Good. That makes things easier. I'm a businessman, Chen Long. The most honest one you'll ever meet. Let's not dance around it. You possess a link to a realm I don't recognize. Tell me how to get there, show me the way to the source of that 'Shadowkhan' energy, and I'll give you the world. Power, immortality, the heads of your enemies... just a small signature on a very standard piece of parchment."

A spectral contract appeared in the air, glowing with a faint, hellish light.

"Heh heh."

The laugh that came from Chen Long's mouth was dry and mocking. It wasn't a sound of amusement; it was the sound of a machine realizing it was being sold a faulty part. Through the clone, Huang Wen was essentially looking at a cosmic scammer and giving him the middle finger.

"Is that a no?" Mephisto's face didn't change, but the temperature on the street dropped twenty degrees. "Mr. Chen, you should know that I'm not particularly fond of being ignored. I can be very... persuasive. If you won't come to the table willingly, I'll just have to break your legs and drag you there."

"You won't be dragging anyone anywhere today, you parasite."

The air fractured. A golden, sparking circle of light—a Sling Ring portal—erupted just feet away. The Ancient One stepped through, her saffron robes billowing in a wind that didn't exist for anyone else. Her eyes were fixed on Mephisto, and the Eye of Agamotto on her chest was already glowing with a fierce, emerald intensity.

"Mephisto," she said, her voice calm but carrying the weight of a mountain. "You're a long way from home. Did you forget the terms of our last 'disagreement'? Or do you need another reminder of what happens when you crawl out of your hole without a permit? I recall Odin had to kick you back across the Bifrost like a stray dog the last time you got greedy."

Mephisto's eyes narrowed into slits. The "benevolent old man" facade flickered, showing a glimpse of red, scaled skin and horns for a fraction of a second. "Sorcerer Supreme," he hissed. "Always so territorial. You think you can keep this one hidden? Look at him. He's a beacon. If I found him, Dormammu is already sniffing the air. Hela won't be far behind. The boy is a walking invitation to every predator in the multiverse."

He turned back to Chen Long, ignoring the Ancient One's magical whips for a moment. "She can't protect you forever, kid. She's a candle in a hurricane. When the big boys come for that shadow energy, she'll be the first one to flicker out. Think about my offer. It's the only one that comes with a survival guarantee."

"Leave. Now," the Ancient One commanded, flicking her wrist. A lash of golden energy tore through Mephisto's physical form.

The demon didn't scream; he just dissolved into a cloud of black smoke that smelled of brimstone. "We'll talk again, Chen Long! In the dark, everyone eventually finds their way to me!"

Silence returned to the street, but the tension remained. The Ancient One turned her gaze toward Chen Long. It was a look that felt like it was peeling back the layers of the clone's "skin" to see the engine underneath.

"You," she said, her voice softer now but no less intimidating. "You are an anomaly. I monitor the Sanctums. I watch the borders of our reality. One moment, this path was empty. The next, you were standing here. No dimensional breach, no magical residue, no footprint. It was as if the universe simply decided you existed, right here, right now."

Through the clone, Huang Wen felt a chill. The Ancient One was the ultimate guardian. If even she couldn't detect the system's "summoning" process, then the system really was operating on a level beyond the laws of the Marvel Multiverse. It was a terrifying realization, but also a comforting one.

"Are you going to kill me?" Chen Long asked, his expression as wooden as ever. "Or just study me?"

"If I wanted to eliminate you, I wouldn't have waited for Mephisto to finish his sales pitch," the Ancient One replied. She approached him, the Eye of Agamotto pulsing. "But you are a leak. Your power is leaking into the ether like blood in water. You're calling the sharks. If you stay on this plane as you are, you'll bring a war to New York that the city isn't ready for."

She raised her hand, and another portal opened—this one led to a place of shifting geometry and floating islands of rock.

"Come," she said. "I'm going to teach you how to shut the door. You need to learn to contain that shadow, to wrap it so tight that even a god couldn't find you standing in front of them. Otherwise, Mephisto will be the least of your worries."

Huang Wen hesitated. This was the Sorcerer Supreme. She was clever, ancient, and potentially dangerous. But he also knew she was a pragmatist. If she wanted him dead, he'd already be in the Mirror Dimension being dissected. Plus, the Shadowkhan clone was effectively immortal; if it was destroyed, he'd just lose some Divine Power and some time. The potential to learn "cloaking" from the master of mystic arts was too good to pass up.

He controlled Chen Long to step through the portal.

The world on the other side was a nightmare of non-Euclidean math. Buildings folded into themselves, the sky was a kaleidoscope of purple and gold, and gravity felt like a suggestion rather than a rule.

"This is a fragment of the Mirror Dimension I've tailored," the Ancient One explained as the portal hissed shut behind them. "A sandbox where your aura can't reach the outside world. Here, you will learn the art of concealment. You will learn to make your dark energy silent. Because right now, Chen Long, you are screaming into the void, and the void is starting to scream back."
