Chapter 74: Debbie's Development
The parent-teacher conference request came from Debbie's eighth-grade homeroom teacher in mid-October.
Ben read the email twice, scanning for trouble indicators. "Please schedule meeting to discuss Deborah's progress" could mean anything—academic problems, social issues, behavioral concerns. With Gallagher history, school meetings rarely brought good news.
"What's it say?" Fiona asked, looking over his shoulder.
"Teacher wants to meet about Debbie. No specifics."
"Shit. What'd she do?"
"Let's not assume disaster." But his MacGyver Mind was already cataloging possibilities, preparing responses for various scenarios.
They met Ms. Richardson Thursday afternoon in her classroom decorated with student projects and motivational posters. The teacher was young, enthusiastic, wearing the slightly worn optimism of educators who still believed they could make differences.
"Thank you for coming," she said, gesturing to student desks they'd be sitting in. "I wanted to discuss Deborah's remarkable development."
"Development?" Fiona repeated cautiously.
"She's one of my strongest students. Organized, responsible, helpful with younger students, completes assignments ahead of schedule." Ms. Richardson pulled out Debbie's folder. "Her grades are excellent—all A's and B's. But more than that, she shows leadership qualities. Other students look to her for guidance."
Ben felt relief and pride simultaneously. "That's great to hear."
"It is great. But what impressed me most is her maturity level." Ms. Richardson flipped through papers. "She wrote an essay about responsibility—caring for younger sibling, managing household tasks, balancing schoolwork with family duties. The organizational skills she demonstrated are college-level."
"She helps with her little brother a lot," Fiona said. "Takes it seriously."
"That's obvious. She wrote about learning to 'plan ahead and anticipate problems' from her guardian." Ms. Richardson looked at Ben. "I assume that's you?"
"I've taught her some planning strategies. Basic stuff."
"Basic stuff that's created remarkably mature thirteen-year-old. She's not seeking attention through typical pre-teen drama—boyfriends, social media conflicts, that chaos. She's focused on actual goals and responsibilities." The teacher smiled. "Whatever you're doing at home, it's working. Keep doing it."

That evening, Debbie found Ben in the shop organizing tools.
"Heard you met with Richardson," she said, sitting on a stool near his workbench.
"She said you're doing well. Really well."
"Trying. School's easy if you just plan ahead and do the work." Debbie kicked her feet against the stool. "That's what you taught me—break big projects into small tasks, work systematically, don't procrastinate."
"You applied it. That's the important part."
"Because it works. My friends are always stressed about assignments. I'm never stressed because I plan." She picked up a wrench, examined it without real interest. "Holly's mom asked if you'd teach her daughter planning skills too. Said Holly's all over the place organizationally."
Ben chuckled. "I'm not running a planning school."
"You kind of are. You taught me, Carl, Ian, even Fiona sometimes. You're good at teaching people to think ahead." Debbie set down the wrench. "Can I ask you something?"
"Always."
"You really think I could be a nurse? Or teacher? Like actually go to college and have that career?"
"Absolutely. You're smart, organized, good with people. Those are exactly the traits nurses and teachers need." Ben leaned against the workbench. "Why? You thinking seriously about it?"
"Maybe. I like helping people. And seeing Lip at MIT made me realize college is possible for Gallaghers now. Before, it seemed impossible. But you're planning education funds, talking about careers, making it seem... achievable."
"It is achievable. Community college is affordable, nursing programs have good financial aid, teaching certification is realistic goal. You've got seven years until college—plenty of time to prepare academically and financially."
"Seven years," Debbie repeated. "That seems far away."
"It'll come faster than you think. But the foundation you're building now—good grades, strong study habits, maturity—makes everything easier later."
She nodded, processing. "Thanks. For making me believe I can have actual future. For showing me that planning works and dreams are possible."
"Thank you for being receptive to teaching and willing to grow. You're doing the hard work—I'm just pointing directions."
Later, Ben found Fiona folding laundry in their bedroom.
"Debbie talked to me," he said. "About college plans. Nursing or teaching."
"She's thirteen. Bit early for career planning."
"Never too early to plant seeds. Besides, having goals motivates current effort. She's working hard in school because she sees purpose in it."
Fiona set down a shirt, looked at him directly. "She's not going to repeat my teenage years, is she?"
"What do you mean?"
"I was her age when I started making bad choices. Seeking attention, acting out, focusing on boys instead of future." Fiona's voice was tight. "I got pregnant at twenty-one because I never planned beyond next week. I don't want that for her."
"She's not you. And you're not your mother—you're breaking that cycle by being present and supportive." Ben crossed to her, took her hands. "Debbie has what you didn't: stability, support, adult who believes in her future. She's building different foundation."
"Because of you. Your influence. Your teaching."
"Because of us. Partnership. You provide emotional support, I provide strategic planning. Together we're giving her what she needs."
Fiona leaned into him, breathing out tension. "She's such a good kid. Mature, responsible, kind. I'm so proud of her."
"She's got good role model. You show her what responsible parenthood looks like every day."
"We show her. Together."

Saturday afternoon, Fiona watched Debbie interact with Holly and two other girls in the backyard.
The girls were working on school project together—some science thing about plant growth. They'd set up experiment in the yard, were measuring and recording data systematically. Debbie led the effort, keeping everyone organized and on-task.
"Your sister's really good at this," Holly said. "My group projects are always chaos."
"Just gotta plan it out," Debbie replied. "Break the work into pieces, assign roles, set deadlines. Basic stuff."
"Basic for you maybe. For us it's like magic."
They laughed, continued working. The dynamic was healthy—collaboration without drama, friendship without toxicity. Debbie made good choices in friends, kept boundaries with boys, focused on academics and future instead of just social status.
She's not repeating my mistakes. Thank God.
V appeared beside Fiona, watching the girls work. "Debbie's doing well."
"Really well. Teacher praised her maturity, organizational skills, leadership."
"That's Ben's influence. Teaching her to plan and think ahead."
"I know. He's changing all their trajectories." Fiona turned to V. "Carl's learning mechanics, Ian's stable, now Debbie's planning college careers. Even Liam's growing up in completely different environment than the older kids did."
"That's what good parenting does—creates opportunities, breaks cycles, builds futures." V bumped Fiona's shoulder. "You're doing that too. Don't minimize your role."
"I'm trying. Just following Ben's lead mostly."
"You're partnering. That's different than following." V crossed her arms. "You provide the emotional intelligence, the maternal care, the communication. He provides the structure and planning. Together you're giving these kids what they need."
Fiona watched Debbie help Holly measure plant height, explaining the method patiently. Mature beyond her years. Focused on goals. Making good choices.
This is what we fought for. Not just survival but growth. Not just avoiding disasters but building futures.
"She's going to be okay," V said quietly. "All of them are. Because of what you and Ben built."
"I hope so. I really hope so."

That night, Ben updated his mental tracking of each kid's development:
Lip: MIT sophomore, thriving academically and socially. Success story. No intervention needed currently—just support and encouragement when he visits.
Ian: Stable for months, relationship with Mickey strong, planning future including education and career. Mental health managed through environment and support. Major success.
Carl: Grades improved, behavior corrected, learning mechanics, on path to legitimate career. Criminal trajectory avoided. Another major success.
Debbie: Mature, organized, good friends, planning college career, making smart choices. Foundation for healthy teenage years established. On track for success.
Liam: Growing up in stable environment with structure, safety, support. First Gallagher to have healthy childhood from the start. Long-term project but foundations perfect.
Every kid developing better than they would have without intervention. Not perfect—problems still existed, challenges still came—but fundamentally different trajectories. Cycles breaking in real-time across entire generation.
Fiona joined him in bed, curling against his side. "What are you thinking about?"
"The kids. How well they're all doing."
"Because of you."
"Because of us. Because of family supporting family. Because of choosing to build instead of just survive." He kissed her forehead. "Debbie's going to be fine. They're all going to be fine."
"I'm starting to believe that. For the first time, I actually believe all these kids might make it out okay."
"They will. We're making sure of it."
They fell asleep holding each other, married couple parenting kids who had futures instead of just survival. The house was quiet, safe, warm. Everything they'd built together humming along smoothly.
All the kids are transforming. Not perfect but better. Not without problems but with solutions. That's all anyone can hope for.
