Chapter 84: The Difficult Conversation
Ben waited until the kids were asleep before approaching Fiona in their bedroom.
She was folding laundry—the domestic task she did when processing stress. Her movements were precise, controlled, walls up.
"We need to talk," Ben said.
"If this is about Jimmy—"
"It's about Jimmy. And the cartel boss's daughter he's married to. And the explicit threats against families of people who try to leave." He pulled out his laptop, cued up the recordings. "I investigated. Found evidence. You need to hear this before you meet him tomorrow."
Her jaw clenched. "You investigated? Behind my back?"
"To protect you. Just listen first. Then be angry."
He played the recordings—Jimmy's conversations about cartel business, Estefania's threats about making examples, the implications for anyone connected to Jimmy who became complication. Mickey's translation provided context for Spanish portions.
Fiona's face went through shock, hurt, anger, fear. By the end, she was gripping the laundry basket white-knuckled.
"He's married to a cartel boss's daughter," she said numbly.
"Yes. Forced into it for green card, then trapped by her father's organization. He's being monitored, controlled, threatened. And his presence here makes you—makes all of us—potential targets."
"And you investigated this without telling me? Bugged his car, followed him, recruited Mickey, did all of this behind my back?" Her voice rose. "Instead of trusting me to make my own decisions, you went full spy operation?"
"Because I sensed danger! My power warned me he was threat. I needed evidence before you'd believe—"
"You needed evidence because you don't trust my judgment!" She threw a shirt down. "Just like with Robbie. You see danger everywhere and decide you know better than me about who I can talk to, who I can forgive, who deserves second chances—"
"Robbie brought cocaine that got you arrested! Jimmy brought cartel attention that could get you killed! These aren't baseless paranoia—"
"They're you controlling my relationships because you think you know better!"
V
V appeared in the bedroom doorway—she'd let herself in with the key Fiona gave her months ago.
"Both of you stop yelling before you wake the kids," she said firmly. "Living room. Now."
They followed like chastened children. V positioned herself between them, mediator mode activated.
"Ben, why did you investigate without telling Fiona first?"
"Because she wouldn't have believed danger warnings without proof. She'd think I was jealous or controlling. I needed evidence to show the threat was real."
"And Fiona, why are you angry about the investigation?"
"Because he went behind my back! Made decisions about my safety without including me. Treated me like I couldn't handle information or make my own choices." She was crying now. "I'm not a child who needs protection from knowledge. I'm his partner. He should trust me with truth, not investigate secretly and ambush me with evidence."
V nodded slowly. "You're both right and both wrong. Ben, you should have explained your danger sense was screaming and asked to investigate together. Going solo was breach of trust. Fiona, Ben's power exists to protect family. When he senses danger, ignoring that to preserve feelings could get people killed. You need to trust his instincts even when they seem paranoid."
"I do trust them," Fiona said. "But I need him to trust me too. To include me instead of deciding for me."
"Fair." V looked at Ben. "Can you do that? Explain dangers you sense instead of just acting on them?"
"I thought I was protecting her from worry until I had proof—"
"You were protecting yourself from her disagreement," V corrected. "From having to convince her instead of just acting unilaterally. That's not partnership."
Ben absorbed the criticism because it was accurate. He'd operated independently because it was easier, not because it was right.
"You're correct," he admitted. "I should have told you what I sensed and why I needed to investigate. I'm sorry for going behind your back."
"And I'm sorry for dismissing your concerns as just jealousy," Fiona said. "I should have taken your danger sense more seriously from the start."
"Good," V said. "Now that you've both apologized, let's address the actual problem: Jimmy's bringing cartel danger to your door. What's the plan?"
"I want to hear his side," Fiona said. "From him directly. With Ben present. Before we make decisions."
"That's dangerous—"
"Ben can be there. You can protect us if something goes wrong. But I deserve to hear why he came back and what his intentions are. Then I'll decide whether to keep contact."
Ben's instinct was to refuse, to keep her away from Jimmy entirely. But V's criticism echoed—he couldn't make unilateral decisions and call it partnership.
"Okay," he said carefully. "He comes here. Tomorrow. With Lip and V present. He explains everything. Then you decide."
"Fair."
V called Jimmy—Fiona had given her the number—and set up the meeting. Tomorrow at 3 PM. Gallagher house. Witnesses present. Truth required.
After V left, Ben and Fiona sat in heavy silence.
"I'm scared," Fiona finally said. "Of the cartel, of losing you, of making wrong choice that gets someone hurt."
"I'm scared too. Of failing to protect you. Of losing your trust. Of being the controlling husband you resent instead of the partner you chose."
"I don't resent you. I'm just... I need to be included. Even in the dangerous stuff. Especially in the dangerous stuff."
"I know. I'll do better."
They went to bed still wounded but no longer actively fighting. Progress, however painful.
Ben
3 PM brought Jimmy to the Gallagher house.
Ben, Fiona, Lip, and V sat in the living room. Jimmy stood near the door looking nervous and guilty.
"Tell us everything," Fiona said. "No lies. No omissions. Why you disappeared, where you've been, why you're back."
Jimmy talked for twenty minutes. The arranged marriage to Estefania, the green card scheme that became trap, Nando's cartel operations, the forced employment, the monitoring, the threats. He came back hoping to explain, maybe find escape route by reuniting with Fiona.
"You came back hoping I'd save you," Fiona said flatly. "Hoping we'd run away together or I'd somehow fix your cartel problem."
"I came back because I love you and I'm desperate—"
"You came back because you're trapped and saw me as exit strategy." Fiona's voice was cold. "You didn't come back for me. You came back for you."
"That's not—"
"It is. And you brought cartel attention to my family in the process. To my kids. To my husband." She stood up. "I survived you leaving. I built something better. You don't get to blow that up because you need saving."
Ben's Danger Intuition suddenly spiked—warning of immediate threat approaching. He moved to the window, saw black SUV parking outside.
"Estefania," he said quietly. "She followed you."
Jimmy went pale. "She can't know about Fiona—"
"Too late." Ben's mind raced. "Everyone upstairs. Now. Fiona, take the kids. Jimmy, you're answering the door with me. Lip, V, witnesses in the kitchen."
They scattered. Ben positioned himself at the door with Jimmy beside him just as Estefania knocked.
He opened it, using every ounce of Silver Tongue power to project calm authority.
"Can I help you?"
Estefania's eyes were cold, calculating. "I'm looking for my husband. His car is here."
"I'm Ben Gallagher. This is my house. Jimmy's here visiting as friend of the family." Ben's power pushed certainty into his words—not a threat, no romance, just old acquaintances catching up. "My wife Fiona knew him years ago. They're friends."
"Friends." Estefania looked past him, assessing. "Your wife is married to you."
"Very much married. Happy marriage." Ben showed his wedding ring deliberately. "Jimmy was just reminiscing about old neighborhood. No drama. No complications."
His Silver Tongue worked—Estefania's suspicion didn't vanish but it redirected slightly. She saw married couple, stable home, no threat to her arrangement.
"Jimmy, we're leaving," she said coldly. "Now."
Jimmy followed obediently. Ben watched them drive away, relief and fear mixing equally.
When he returned inside, Fiona was furious.
"You used your power on her. I heard it—that tone you get when you're influencing someone."
"To protect us. She was suspicious and armed. I convinced her we're not a threat."
"By manipulating her perceptions without consent—"
"By keeping her from shooting someone in our living room! Yes, I used Silver Tongue. I'd use it again to protect this family from cartel enforcer with jealousy issues!"
They stared at each other across the kitchen, the gap widening again.
"Jimmy needs to leave Chicago," Fiona said finally. "Permanently. I'll tell him that myself. But you can't threaten him—"
"I'll do whatever necessary to protect you. Including threats." Ben's voice was hard. "If he won't leave voluntarily, I'll ensure the cartel knows he's trying to escape. Harsh, yes. But necessary to remove threat from our door."
"You'd get him killed—"
"I'd prevent him from getting us killed!"
Lip intervened. "Stop. Both of you. Fiona, text Jimmy that you can't see him again—it's too dangerous for everyone. Be clear. Be final. Ben, no threats unless Jimmy refuses. Give him chance to do the right thing."
Fiona sent the text. Jimmy's response came quickly: I understand. I'm sorry for everything. I'll figure something out.
"Done," Fiona said. "Now leave it alone."
But Ben's Danger Intuition still hummed. Jimmy had agreed too easily. Something wasn't resolved.
That night, Fiona slept in Debbie's room for second time in their marriage. Ben sat in the shop remembering this exact pattern—him trying to protect her, her feeling controlled, distance growing between them despite love underneath.
Lip's text arrived: You did the right thing. Cartel trumps feelings.
But "right thing" didn't feel victorious when his wife wouldn't look at him.
