Chapter 111 - Whispers Beneath the Pulse

The city didn't sleep anymore.

Even when the sky dimmed and the silver veins quieted to a soft pulse, there was still that hum — a low, restless sound beneath the streets, like a whisper buried under stone.

At first, I thought it was only her. The system's voice, steady and distant, breathing logic through my mind like a heartbeat. But this… was different.

It came from below.

Heir detected—link stabilizing.

Her tone had shifted, softer now, almost cautious.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

Disturbance in the root channels. Anomalous resonance detected.

I closed my eyes and listened. Beneath the layers of metal and memory, beneath the echo of footsteps and wind, there were voices.

Not one. Many.

They murmured in a language half-forgotten — echoes of the city's past heirs, woven into the foundation. Fragments of those who came before, still tethered to the living architecture.

They respond to the decree, she said quietly. You awakened them.

"I didn't mean to."

Intent is irrelevant. Command creates consequence.

The whispering grew louder. I could almost distinguish words now — sorrow, regret, warning — like ghosts trapped within the mortar. One voice cut through the rest, sharp as glass:

She repeats the mistake.

I froze.

"Who said that?"

The air shimmered. For a moment, the bridge lights flickered — then the system's voice distorted, cracking mid-sentence.

—unrecognized… entity… identification: heir-—

Her tone fractured. Something was overriding her.

You should have left it silent.

The words came from everywhere and nowhere, woven into the heartbeat of the city. Deeper, older, male — the memory of a ruler long dead.

I felt my pulse race. "Who are you?"

A voice buried for mercy's sake. You woke us.

Then silence. The hum stopped.

And for the first time since she entered my mind, she sounded afraid.

Heir, she whispered, barely audible now, the roots are no longer entirely mine.

The veins along the bridge dimmed to a faint, trembling glow. The city listened again — but this time, something else listened with it.
