Chapter 128 - The Hidden Chambers

The castle was quieter than the city below, but it throbbed with life all the same. Stone walls and high ceilings pulsed faintly beneath my fingertips, and every corridor seemed to stretch, bending subtly toward me as if the castle itself was welcoming me—or testing me.

I traced my hand along the wall, following a groove that ran from the throne room. It led me to a narrow staircase, almost hidden behind a tapestry that depicted a past ruler I did not recognize. The threads of silver water followed my steps, glowing faintly as they mapped the path.

At the top, a corridor stretched in both directions. Dust swirled in the pale light filtering through tiny windows, and the air smelled faintly of age and stone. I stepped forward, barefoot, letting the city beneath me guide the rhythm of my walk.

One door caught my attention. Heavy oak, reinforced with iron. The crown shifted slightly on my head as I touched the handle. My pulse echoed through the metal, and the door creaked open.

Inside was a chamber unlike any I had seen. Shelves lined the walls, filled with books that looked centuries old. Scrolls, sealed letters, and intricate maps littered the desks. A faint hum, almost like a whisper, vibrated through the floorboards.

I crouched, lifting a scroll carefully. The script was foreign, but I could sense the intent behind it, a lingering echo of those who had once walked these halls. The silver threads lifted from the floor, hovering around me, reading, observing.

A chill ran through me, not from fear, but from recognition. This room had been a place of power, of planning, of rule. The past rulers had left pieces of themselves here, shadows of thought, fragments of strategy—threads that the city had absorbed long before I arrived.

I explored further, tracing each shelf, touching the faded spines. The threads of the city pulsed faintly, interacting with the energy in the room. They shimmered in agreement with my movements, as though approving my claim, recognizing my presence as rightful.

A hidden panel slid open when I pressed against it, revealing another staircase descending deeper into the castle. The air grew cooler, heavier. My reflection flickered in the polished stone walls, multiplied by the shadows, and I realized the castle had layers I had yet to uncover. Layers waiting for someone with the patience—and the will—to see them.

I stepped forward, letting the silver water curl around my fingers, rising with me like a guiding current. Every heartbeat, every breath, every step was mirrored by the castle itself.

I was not alone here. Not entirely. The echoes of the past lingered, watching, waiting for me to understand. And I would.

The heir did not rush. The heir observed. The heir claimed what was hers—slowly, deliberately, entirely.

The hidden chambers were no longer hidden. And I would learn every secret they held.
