The council chamber was colder than the rest of the estate, stone walls slick with damp, torchlight flickering against banners of silver and crimson. The elders waited, seated in a semicircle, eyes sharp and calculating, as though they could see not only my body but the thoughts I carried within it.
I stepped forward with measured grace, every movement deliberate. They expected fear, or at least hesitation. They received none.
"Seliora," one elder said, his voice calm but edged with authority, "you have been trained to obey. To serve. To endure. Will you demonstrate your understanding of these lessons?"
I inclined my head slightly. "Yes." My tone was steady, neutral — the tone of obedience, polished and flawless.
Yet beneath the mask, my mind was calculating. Every word, every pause, every subtle gesture could be weaponized. They think I am contained. They do not know the edge of my silence.
The elder gestured for me to recite the rites. I repeated the words, precise, measured, flawless. The others nodded, satisfied on the surface. Beneath, I noted the slight falter of one man's hand, the subtle tightening of a shoulder across the circle. My restraint unsettled them more than overt defiance ever could.
A second elder leaned forward, curiosity in his eyes. "You show composure under scrutiny. That is commendable. But can composure endure the Veil itself?"
I let my silence answer. My gaze remained unbroken, calm and icy, holding theirs as they shifted uneasily. It can. And it will.
When the lesson concluded, I bowed just enough to honor tradition. Their nods and murmurs of approval were expected. Their assumptions were mine to manipulate. They would measure me, weigh me, and decide I was still theirs. They could not see that my silence, my restraint, was not submission — it was preparation.
As I left the chamber, I felt the faint satisfaction of a blade sliding into a sheath. The mask of obedience was in place. But beneath it, defiance had begun to sharpen.
