Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2: THE KING'S MERCY

The echo of Sai Ji's roar still rattled through the forest.

The world had not reset.

No logout. No menu. No reset.

He was still here. Still in the enormous body of the Werewolf King.

Cold grass pressed against his paw pads. Blood clung to his claws—sticky, metallic, painfully real.

Aetheria Online wasn't supposed to feel like this.

Pain was supposed to be reduced. Smells weren't supposed to exist. This wasn't immersion. This felt like replacement.

A wave of scent slammed into him.

Wet soil. Rotting bark. Distant carrion.

Hidden animals. Even the faint electricity of moving prey somewhere beyond the trees.

His nose had unlocked a secret layer of the world.

"My king… your blood stirs."

Fen and Lura knelt again—but this time, their posture felt different. Not soldiers. Believers.

Fen lifted his head slightly. "Do you feel it, Your Majesty?"

Sai Ji frowned. Feel what?

Then it hit him. Heat crawled along his spine. His muscles vibrated with restless power.

A notification burned into his vision.

[RACIAL AWAKENING — Stage 1]

Your lineage remembers.

+30% Sensory Range

+10% Physical Output

New Instinct Thread: Hunger (Dormant)

Sai Ji stared at the last line. "…I don't like that."

Lineage. The word echoed strangely in his mind. "Remembers what?"

Fen and Lura exchanged a glance.

Lura stepped forward slowly. "This world does not lie to kings. The body you wear… was never meant to sleep."

Another system window appeared.

[Skill Unlocked — Predator's Sense]

Detect fear, blood, mana, and deception within 50 meters.

Accuracy increases with emotional intensity.

WARNING: Skill cannot be disabled

Sai Ji blinked. "Smell lies?"

Fen's golden eyes held a depth that felt disturbingly real.

"You are not merely playing," he said quietly. "Aetheria remembers you."

Ice ran through Sai Ji's chest.

Another howl tore through the forest.

Before he could respond—heat spiked along his spine.

Reality collapsed. Black. Silence.

Then it snapped back.

Fen and Lura stood several meters away, watching him carefully. Like he was a bomb.

"How long was I out?" Sai Ji asked.

"Eight minutes," Fen said.

"Twenty-three seconds," Lura corrected instantly. They glared at each other.

Fen shrugged.

Sai Ji exhaled. Great. My guides can't even agree on time.

He stood slowly. No weakness. No dizziness. His body moved smoothly—too smoothly. Like he had always lived inside it.

Another system message blinked.

[WARNING: Physiological Sync — 67%]

Beast Instinct Integration Increasing.

Current Identity Balance:

Human (Sai Ji): 54%

Beast King Legacy: 46%

"What does this mean?" he asked.

Lura's expression darkened. "It means the king's instincts are merging with you. Choosing you."

Sai Ji swallowed. "Choosing me for what?"

Neither answered. Silence pressed on him. A strange pressure formed in his chest. Not hunger. Something deeper. Something primal.

His claws flexed against the soil.

"Okay…" he muttered. "Let's try something simple."

He focused.

LOG OUT

A translucent menu flickered. Then shattered into red text.

[COMMAND FAILED]

Neural Sync Exceeds Safe Limit.

Safe Disconnection Impossible.

Stabilize biological state before attempting logout.

Sai Ji froze. "I… can't log out."

Fen bowed his head calmly. "Of course not."

"'Of course not'?!" Sai Ji roared. His voice cracked a nearby branch. Even he flinched.

Lura stepped closer. "Your sync is too deep. The system cannot separate you now. Not won't. Cannot."

Sai Ji's tail lashed. His claws flexed. "You're telling me… I'm stuck like this? Fused? Forever?"

"Not forever," Fen said, voice low and firm. "But for now… yes. You need control first."

Sai Ji's ears flattened. A low growl rumbled in his chest. "I—"

Before he could finish, a massive branch overhead groaned. He froze.

A sharp crack. The tree began to collapse.

Sai Ji leapt instinctively. His claws raked through the bark for grip. Muscles coiled like steel springs, landing safely on a mossy rock below.

Fen moved instantly, hammer ready. "Careful!"

Lura rolled sideways under falling debris, blades flashing. "Focus, King! Don't lose your head!"

Sai Ji's heart hammered. Not a tutorial. Not a respawn. This is real.

[SYSTEM ALERT — TERRAIN HAZARD DETECTED]

Falling debris potential: HIGH

Recommended: Avoid overhead structures

A flicker caught Sai Ji's vision. Something moved, hidden behind a thicket. Predator's Sense flared.

[Predator's Sense — Activated]

A faint red outline glowed over a small animal—a rabbit, heartbeat irregular, mana faint but present.

Then he noticed a second red glow: a crouched player, camouflaged in leaves, fear radiating off them in waves.

Sai Ji smirked. "Oh… that's clever."

He stalked closer, claws brushing the dirt. The player's eyes widened. They bolted.

Fen shook his head, smiling faintly. "You still hesitate."

Lura's grin was sharper. "Test your limits. This is the start of learning control."

Sai Ji inhaled, tail twitching.

The forest seemed alive.

Moss squished beneath his paws.

The damp air carried the smell of berries, blood, and distant predators. Insects hummed faintly against his skull.

[Predator's Sense — Passive Scan Complete]

Nearby creatures detected: 7

Potential threat level: Low → Medium

Hidden mana signatures: 2

A soft growl escaped him. This… works.

The forest thinned.

Music vibrated through the ground—a deep, primal rhythm. Torchlight flickered ahead.

Then he saw it: a broken stone entrance carved into a hillside.

Above it hung a flickering neon sign:

✦ THE DEN BELOW — ALL SPECIES WELCOME ✦

The scent from inside overwhelmed him.

Warm. Chaotic. Alive.

"My king… this place overwhelms the senses," Lura whispered.

Fen nodded. "Full of players."

"Then why bring me here?" Sai Ji asked.

Lura met his gaze. "Because the hunger inside you is building pressure. If you don't release it safely…"

She didn't finish.

He understood. Lose control—and the beast would take over.

His identity window flashed again:

Human: 54%

Beast: 46%

The bass from inside the Den pounded like a second heartbeat.

Lura whispered: "My king… choose."

Sai Ji looked at the glowing entrance. Then at the system warning. Then inward—at the storm inside him.

He stepped forward immediately as the neon lights swallowed him.

And the Werewolf King descended into The Den Below.
