"We didn't do anything. I really like my current boyfriend and don't want to make any more mistakes."
Serena Stanton lied without a flicker of emotion, her tone sounding utterly sincere.
"Goodbye." As she finished speaking, she didn't wait for Adrian's reply and simply hung up the phone.
She switched her phone to silent mode, left it charging on the nightstand.
Serena rolled over, sprawled across the bed, her face buried deep into the soft pillow. Moments later, she turned out the lights and went to sleep.
The next morning she woke up, reached for her phone out of habit, barely opened her eyes for a glance.
She found a message from Adrian, nothing extra, just telling her he'd be back in a couple of days.
Serena didn't think much of it, put her phone down and went into the bathroom to wash up.
The following few days went by uneventfully; she didn't reply, and Adrian didn't call or text again.
It was as if they'd never encountered each other again.
