Chapter 145 - The Surge-Protector

The "Main-Breaker" we had hard-wired into the "ON" position began to scream. It wasn't a mechanical sound, but the high-pitched whine of "Logical Friction." The Absolute Logic beam from the Archive's core was pouring raw, unthrottled data into the copper pillars of the Source-Strata.

[WARNING: MULTIVERSE_TRANSFORMER OVERHEATING]

[CURRENT LOAD: 4000% OF OPERATIONAL CAPACITY]

[STATUS: CRITICAL MELTDOWN IN 180 SECONDS]

"They're doing it," Mateo shouted over the roar of the humming liquid lightning. "They're dumping the entire 'Narrative-Weight' of the Grand Library into the grid! It's like trying to push an ocean through a drinking straw! The 'Source-Cables' are going to liquefy!"

In the viewport, the rivers of lightning were turning from blue to a blinding, corrosive white. The Scrappers' Fleet was vibrating so hard that "World-Marbles" were starting to crack.

"Kenji! If the grid blows, it won't just be a blackout," Elara cried, holding onto the command console as the ship bucked. "It'll be a 'Format-C.' Every soul connected to the 'Bridge' will be wiped to zero!"

[NEW MISSION: ABSORB THE OVERLOAD]

Kenji's avatar looked at his hands. They were translucent, the circuit-scars glowing with a heat that was beginning to melt the deck of the Archive. He looked back at the "Core"—his true self, suspended in the violet nebula.

"I built the Bridge," Kenji said, his voice sounding like grinding tectonic plates. "And a Bridge is only as good as its 'Supports'."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE GROUNDED_GOD]

Kenji didn't run away from the surge. He leaped into the Main-Breaker. He wrapped his arms around the mountain-sized switch and drove his feet into the "Sub-Strata" floor—the literal bedrock of the multiverse.

"I am the Surge-Protector!" Kenji roared.

[NOTICE: KENJI_TANAKA IS ATTEMPTING 'TOTAL_CURRENT_ABSORPTION']

He didn't try to stop the power. He tried to "Store" it. He opened every "Partition" of his soul—the "Manager," the "Hacker," the "Smith," and the "Gutter-Kid." He turned his "Standalone Reality" into a massive, infinite "Capacitor."

ZZZZZT-BOOM.

The white lightning hit him. Kenji's wireframe body in the nebula turned into a vertical pillar of fire. Every person in the "Independent Network" felt a sudden, sharp jolt of "Universal Memory." They saw the Archive's secrets, its failures, and its hidden "Trash-Files" passing through their own minds as Kenji filtered the data.

"He's... he's 'Buffering' the apocalypse!" Mateo whispered, tears streaming down his face. "He's taking the hit for everyone!"

[SYSTEM ALERT: CAPACITOR_INTEGRITY: 14%]

[WARNING: SOUL-FRAGMENTS ARE DISPELLING]

Kenji's matte-black skin began to flake away, revealing the raw "Source-Code" beneath. It hurt. It felt like being un-made and re-made a billion times a second. But every time a piece of him broke, a "Labor-Signature" from the Fleet reinforced it.

The twelve million souls weren't just watching. They were "Resistance."

"Don't let him go!" the Watchmaker's voice echoed through the network. "Give him your 'Waste-Heat'! Give him your 'Friction'!"

The people of the Gutter, the Scrappers, and even the "Awakened Elite" from the Spire began to "Ground" Kenji. They channeled their own small, human resistances into the network, creating a "Distributed-Ground-Wire."

[NOTICE: LOAD BALANCED ACROSS 14,000,000 USER-NODES]

[MELTDOWN: STABILIZED]

The Absolute Logic beam flickered and died. The Great Archive had run out of "Pressure." The Main-Breaker sat silent, glowing a dull, hot red, but the "Source-Cables" held.

Kenji slumped against the switch. His avatar was tiny now, barely three feet tall, and almost entirely transparent. He looked like a child made of fading embers.

"Kenji!" Priya ran to him, her healing mana desperately trying to "Patch" his flickering form.

"Did... did the fuse blow?" Kenji whispered, his voice a tiny digital chirp.

"No," Mateo said, kneeling beside him. "You held. We all held. We're still 'Plugged In,' but the Archive is... empty. They spent everything they had to kill us, and we're still here."

[STATUS: ENERGY-INDEPENDENCE PERMANENT]

[NOTICE: THE GREAT ARCHIVE HAS ENTERED 'LOW-POWER_SAFE_MODE']

Kenji looked up at the "Source-Strata" ceiling. "Safe-mode... that's when the 'Admin-Password' is easiest to crack. Mateo... get the 'Bag of Dissent.' It's time to... 'Log In'."
