Chapter 23 - Chapter 22

After a day Hinata would later choose to remember only vaguely as mother–daughter bonding—and more honestly as a very polite form of torture involving baths, fabrics, and relentless doting—she woke again the next morning at her usual early hour.

Habit pulled her from bed before thought did.

The house was quiet in that particular way it always was just before the compound truly woke. Not asleep, not active—holding its breath. Hinata dressed herself with practiced movements and made her way toward the breakfast room, expecting the familiar presence of her father at the table.

He wasn't there.

Only Hikari sat waiting, already prepared, hands folded neatly in her lap. The absence was noticeable enough that Hinata paused for a fraction of a second before taking her seat.

That, too, was information.

"Good morning, Hinata," Hikari said gently, watching her closely as she sat down.

"Good morning, Mother," Hinata replied, voice steady.

The food was served in silence at first. Rice. Soup. Simple, familiar. Hinata ate slowly, aware that Hikari's attention never fully left her.

After a few moments, Hikari spoke. "Today, I would like you to stay home."

Hinata looked up.

"There are several things we've been meaning to start," Hikari continued smoothly, as if this were the most natural suggestion in the world. "Embroidery, for one. Basic stitching. It's a skill every proper Hyuuga lady should learn early. And there are some sewing projects I think you'd enjoy."

Hinata swallowed.

She already knew what was happening.

"I have training today," she said.

Hikari smiled, patient and calm. "You've been through a great deal. One day away from physical training will not harm you. Hanato will understand."

Hinata set her chopsticks down.

"With respect," she said carefully, "a proper Hyuuga does not neglect training."

Hikari blinked.

That… was new.

"Rest is also important," Hikari replied, still gentle but now more attentive. "Strength grows when the body is cared for."

"I am not exhausted," Hinata said. "And training is essential. Especially now."

"Now?"

Hinata met her mother's eyes. "I promised Father I would not falter."

The words landed heavier than she intended.

Hikari studied her for a long moment. Not angry. Not disappointed. Just… concerned.

"You've never objected before," she said softly.

Hinata hesitated—only for a moment. "Because before, it didn't matter."

That was as much truth as she could safely give.

Hikari exhaled slowly. Then, after another long pause, she nodded. "Very well. But I will walk you there."

Hinata inclined her head. "Thank you."

The walk through the compound felt different today.

Not because the paths had changed—but because Hinata had.

She noticed how her steps felt surer, how her breathing settled naturally into rhythm, how her awareness stretched outward even without consciously pushing it. The world felt… sharper.

Hanato was already waiting when they arrived.

"Hinata-hime," he greeted, bowing. "Hikari-sama."

Hikari returned the greeting, exchanged a few quiet words with him, then left without lingering. Hinata watched her go, then turned back to the training ground.

They began as always.

Warm-ups. Stretching. Controlled breathing. Cardio that gradually ramped upward. Hanato mirrored many of her movements now, watching his own chakra flow as much as hers.

It was during these early exercises that Hinata noticed it again.

The lack of strain.

Her muscles responded instantly to chakra infusion, distributing the load so efficiently that the physical effort barely registered. She could maintain form, pace, and control without ever truly pushing herself.

A memory surfaced unbidden.

Weights.

Not metaphorical ones.

Actual weights.

She approached Hanato once the warm-up concluded.

"Sensei," she asked, "do we have weighted equipment? For arms, legs, and torso?"

Hanato raised an eyebrow. "Why do you ask?"

"I feel I am not exerting myself sufficiently," Hinata replied. "The chakra infusion compensates too effectively. Additional resistance may improve muscle development."

Hanato considered this, fingers tapping lightly against his arm.

"…That is reasonable," he said at last. He gestured to one of the nearby attendants. "Bring the training weights."

Several sets were brought out shortly after.

Hinata tested them methodically before deciding.

Two kilograms for each arm.

Two kilograms for each leg.

Four kilograms secured around her torso.

The difference was immediate.

Movement became deliberate. Every step required intention. The chakra infusion now had to work—to balance, reinforce, and stabilize all at once.

Sweat beaded on her brow within minutes.

This was good.

They continued.

Strength exercises. Endurance drills. Balance work.

Each motion demanded focus, and Hinata welcomed it. The burn in her muscles anchored her firmly in the present.

When they transitioned into stances, Hanato watched closely.

Despite the added weight, Hinata moved with precision. Each Gentle Fist form flowed into the next, transitions smooth and controlled. Her posture remained stable, her strikes clean.

Hanato's eyes widened slightly.

"Excellent," he murmured.

After several repetitions, he began introducing additional stances—more complex sequences, longer chains. Hinata absorbed them quickly, integrating them into her movements as if they had always been there.

By the end, she was breathing hard.

Her muscles trembled faintly.

And she felt… alive.

As they finished the session, one thought echoed clearly in her mind.

If this is what controlled weight can do now…

A certain green-clad figure from memory flickered briefly across her thoughts.

She straightened.

This was only the beginning.
