Chapter 96 - Office Work

Over the course of the next day and a half I stayed in the hotel and worked on some things.

After talking to Layla I sat around thinking. Something that concerned me was the lack of communication ability.

So, I downloaded an AI model for translation onto my phone. The main problem with this is that language models are generally large.

Luckily there are many language models for the translation of our two languages. Some even have decent compression.

Since I am building my own AI out of this, I made it larger than necessary. I downloaded a few regions of dialects, the most common ones. Then pieced it all together.

I then connected it to my AR glasses to give myself real life subtitles. Plus using spatial recognition and audio tracking to put the subtitles under the person who is speaking.

The only thing I have to do is speak in English and the translator will give me a translation in Romaji. Romaji is a version of their language written in English letters to understand the phonics used.

Then I only have to speak the phonics and presto chango, I'm speaking their language.

Now, to upgrade it, it needs usage. Which is easy since the TV is only in the native language and it doesn't have subtitles. So, I sit in front of the TV letting the translations go crazy until dinner.

After dinner I watched more TV until 10:00 PM when I finally left myself go to sleep.

The morning was here, I woke up at 6:00. I got a full 8 hours of sleep.

I got ready for the day and headed down to the restaurant for breakfast. Breakfast was miso soup with grilled fish and steamed rice. There were a few other side dishes as well.

I spent the rest of the day in my room watching TV.

I managed to upgrade the translation AI twice, which made it quicker, more precise, and intuitive.

It was finally Monday, December 1, 2025.

Today was unusually warm for Tokyo in December, it was in the 60s. There was light wind and it was sunny. The sun rose at 6:30 while I was putting on my clothes after showering.

The government office opened at 8:30 so I had two hours to kill.

I spent an hour eating another traditional Yamato breakfast.

They are good but not quite as filling as I'm used to. Though to be fair, I guess that's why their population has some of the lowest obesity rates around 4%.

The next hour was spent getting to the government office. I got there 20 minutes early.

Once the office officially opened I met the manager for the department I was going to be working with. His name was Tanaka Hiroshi. He was a portly man in his forties, with a receding greasy hair line, and a sly smile that said all I needed to know about how he got the position.

I don't think he's a bad person, but I'm sure he has pulled some underhanded tactics to get to his current position.

I don't have any evidence to support that claim but there's just something about him that feels off.

He bowed and said, "Hello, it's nice to finally meet you. I'm Tanaka Hiroshi. Tanaka is my family name and Hiroshi is my given name."

I responded with a bow, though I don't know the etiquette surrounding that, I tried to be polite. Responding I said, "Hello, It's nice to meet you as well. I'm Elijah Ambrose. Ambrose is my family name and Elijah is my given name."

"Good. Now that that's out of the way we can get right into business. I apologize for the rush, there is a lot of paper work to go through and our department is under staffed at the moment. I hope for your leniency."

"Of course. I'm not one for superfluous exchanges."

"Thats great. Thank you. Now, right this way. I'll introduce you to the guy that will be handling your case specifically. Ah! Here he is. This is Ren Shiro, if you need anything this is the guy to call."

"Alright, fantastic. Thank you for showing me the way and for the introduction."

"No worries, well, I'll be on my way and get out of your hair."

With that Tanaka Hiroshi left the two of us on our own.

I turned back and said, "It's nice to meet you Mr. Ren, I hope we can have a productive cooperation."

Ren Shiro smiled like the morning breeze, light, airy, and a little cold? He said, "Likewise, it's nice to meet you Mr. Ambrose. We have a lot of paperwork to get through today so you don't mind if we get right into it, do you?"

"No, I'd rather get as much done as possible."

"Alright then lets get right into it."

We went through more documents detailing my work in the country and sorting out the finalization of the conditional residency. It's labeled as permanent but it has conditions, I'm sure that's not confusing.

Once the residency problems were done we walked over to the bank. The bank opens at 9:00 and closes at 3:00. Crazy short hours, I agree, how does anyone make it to the bank while having a full time job.

I have seen an ice cream shop with similar hours before and I thought it was a front for money laundering. Because no one was ever there and the hours ensured that kids could never be there.

But, other countries have different norms.

The Bank of Yamato is considered the bank of banks here so the government would like our finances to go through this bank. That is not a requirement, it is just what they would prefer. The Bank of Yamato is not a government entity and is independent.

Ren Shiro handled the paperwork with the bank staff to get my account open. As a government worker he was able to bypass a lot of the checks that seemed necessary.

Once the account was open I had to transfer the money in. The $162,119,917.44 that had been in another account for verification was moved to the new account.

The government would use this account to be the intermediary for purchasing the photolithography machine. Since an individual typically wouldn't be allowed to buy it on their own.
