Chapter 87 - Chapter 86 Eldergleam and Adoption

Chapter 86 Eldergleam and Adoption

The next morning arrived in complete tranquility.

A thin veil of mist still clung to the land outside Whiterun, curling lazily along the stone paths and wooden rooftops as if reluctant to leave. The world was painted in warm shades of gold and amber when the sun slowly emerged from behind the distant mountains, its light spilling gently over the city walls and washing everything in a quiet, peaceful glow. Even the usual sounds of Whiterun felt muted only the faint rustle of banners, the soft call of birds greeting the dawn, and the distant footsteps of early guards changing shifts.

Lucia stood in front of her bedroom door, already dressed in her new shirt. She kept smoothing the fabric nervously, her small fingers clutching it at her chest as though she needed to reassure herself that it was real. Every few seconds, she rose slightly onto her toes, then dropped back down, unable to keep her excitement contained. Her posture was stiff yet bouncy, caught somewhere between nervousness and pure anticipation.

Her eyes sparkled brightly, darting back and forth between Alex and Astrid. She watched their every movement closely the way Astrid adjusted her gear, the way Alex checked his cloak afraid that if she looked away for even a moment, this whole morning might vanish like a dream.

"Are we really going somewhere far?" she asked softly, though her voice trembled with excitement she could barely hold back. The words rushed out as if she'd been waiting all night to say them.

Astrid finished tightening the straps of her gear, giving them a final tug before straightening up. She glanced down at Lucia and smiled, a relaxed and genuine smile that softened her usually sharp expression. "Fairly far," she replied casually. "Think of it as a vacation."

Lucia froze.

Her eyes widened, her lips parting slightly as she processed the word. "A-a vacation…?" she echoed, as if tasting it for the first time. Her fingers tightened around her shirt, and her shoulders lifted unconsciously. It was clear the idea felt almost unreal to her something meant for other people, not for someone like her.

Alex watched the exchange in silence.

A faint smile curved his lips as he observed Lucia's reaction, warmth spreading quietly through his chest. He adjusted his cloak, smoothing the fabric over his shoulder, then checked his belt one last time before nodding to himself. Everything was ready.

Earlier, he and Astrid had planned this trip carefully not just as a brief escape from their responsibilities, but as a surprise for Lucia. Their decision to adopt her was something they wanted to mark with a memory she would never forget. With two full days still remaining before Jarl Balgruuf finished preparing the dragon trap, there was no immediate danger pressing down on them.

For once, they could breathe.

It wasn't just Lucia who needed this break.

They did too.

The battles, the tension, the constant pressure of knowing what lay ahead it had all taken its toll. A short retreat, even just for a day, felt necessary.

At first, Astrid had been unsure where they should go. Skyrim was vast, and most roads led only to danger or hardship. But Alex hadn't hesitated.

He already knew the perfect place.

He knew it from the game.

The map was etched into his memory every path, every landmark. In his previous life, he had only ever seen it through a screen, staring at it from behind a monitor. And yet, even then, its beauty had been unmistakable. The atmosphere, the silence, the sacred presence it had always stood out.

Now, walking this world with his own feet, breathing its air, he knew without a doubt that seeing it in person would surpass anything he remembered.

(Eldergleam Sanctuary…) Alex thought quietly.

(A place tied to a future quest. A sacred tree. A turning point.)

To Astrid and Lucia, this was simply a journey another road, another destination chosen by Alex.

But to Alex…

This was a place where the world itself seemed to listen.

The journey took time.

Their footsteps carried them far beyond Whiterun's walls, into open land where the horizon seemed endless. Vast grasslands stretched out in every direction, the tall blades of grass swaying gently beneath the wind like quiet waves upon a green sea. The air smelled fresh and clean, carrying the scent of earth and wild plants warmed by the morning sun.

They followed narrow paths winding between ancient, weathered stones remnants of structures long forgotten. Some stones leaned at odd angles, cracked and softened by time, as if the land itself had slowly reclaimed them. Along the way, they passed a handful of travelers. A merchant with a heavy pack offered them a tired but friendly nod, while a pair of adventurers paused briefly to greet them before continuing on their own road.

Lucia walked between Alex and Astrid, her small steps light but eager. Every so often, she would slow down, kneeling to brush her fingers against wildflowers growing along the roadside tiny blossoms of blue, white, and yellow that trembled softly under her touch. At times, she stopped altogether, tilting her head back to stare up at the wide sky, her eyes following the drifting clouds as if she wanted to commit every shape and movement to memory.

Alex noticed how her pace changed sometimes quick with excitement, sometimes slow with wonder and matched his steps to hers without saying a word. Astrid, walking on Lucia's other side, occasionally glanced down to make sure she hadn't wandered too far, her hand hovering close, ready to steady her if needed.

As they continued forward, the landscape slowly began to change.

The open plains gave way to denser growth. Trees grew closer together, their branches weaving overhead and dimming the sunlight. The wind softened, and the distant sounds of the open land faded until only the crunch of their footsteps remained.

Then, gradually, they reached a cave.

The moment they stepped closer, the air shifted.

It became cooler brushing against their skin like a gentle breath.

Quieter sound itself seemed to lower its voice.

And somehow… calmer, as if the very atmosphere carried a soothing presence.

Lucia slowed, her steps faltering, until she stopped completely.

She stood there, frozen in place.

Before them lay the mouth of a natural cave, embraced by thick stone and ancient roots that twisted and curled around the entrance like protective arms. Clusters of green leaves shimmered faintly, as though touched by an unseen light, casting a soft emerald glow across the rock. Moss blanketed the cave walls, damp and vivid, while creeping vines trailed downward in graceful arcs.

From deep within the cave came the gentle sound of flowing water, steady and rhythmic, echoing softly like a lullaby meant to calm restless hearts.

Lucia held her breath without realizing it.

Her chest rose slowly, then stilled. Her fingers curled at her sides, trembling just slightly as her wide eyes reflected the green glow before her.

"It's… so beautiful," she whispered, her voice barely louder than the sound of the water.

Alex watched her reaction and couldn't help but smile faintly. He rested one hand on his hip, the other relaxed at his side, his expression calm yet knowing.

"Well," he said softly, a hint of warmth and quiet excitement in his tone, "you'll be even more surprised once we go inside."

Inside, the sanctuary opened before them like another world.

The narrow passage gave way to a vast, its ceiling rising high above, disappearing into shadow. Soft emerald light filled the cavern, not harsh or blinding, but gentle like a quiet breath of nature itself. Every step they took echoed faintly, then faded, as if even sound did not dare to linger for long.

At the very center stood the sacred tree.

Eldergleam.

Its massive trunk rose with quiet majesty, rooted deep into the stone below, yet somehow untouched by the cold hardness of the cave. The bark was pale and smooth, almost luminous, etched with faint natural patterns that looked like flowing veins of light. From the trunk, thick branches extended outward and upward, spreading wide like welcoming arms, forming a living canopy above.

The leaves shimmered softly, glowing with a gentle green radiance. Each one trembled ever so slightly, not from wind, but as if responding to an unseen heartbeat. From between the branches, beams of light filtered down like fragments of falling stars, drifting slowly through the air before dissolving into nothing. The light illuminated clear pools of water at the tree's base, their surfaces perfectly still, reflecting the glowing leaves above like a mirror. Around them, lush green plants flourished in quiet abundance, their colors vivid despite the absence of sunlight.

The air itself felt different.

Cool, yet comforting.

Heavy with age, yet gentle.

There was no wind. No harsh sounds. No distant echoes of the outside world. Even breathing felt softer here, as if the sanctuary invited silence rather than demanded it.

Several people were already present, scattered respectfully around the tree. Some knelt with their heads bowed, hands pressed together in silent prayer. Others sat by the water's edge, eyes half-closed, expressions serene and distant, as though they had forgotten time and perhaps even themselves.

Lucia took a slow step forward.

Then another.

Her movements were careful, almost reverent, as if she were afraid of disturbing the air around her. Her eyes widened with every step, reflecting Eldergleam's emerald glow, the light dancing across her pupils. Her lips parted slightly, her breath shallow and unsteady.

Her hand lifted, fingers trembling faintly as she reached out not toward the tree itself, but into the space around it, as if she simply wanted to feel the presence that filled the sanctuary.

"I've… never seen anything this beautiful before," she murmured, her voice barely more than a breath, carried softly into the stillness.

Alex stood behind her, watching in silence.

His chest tightened, a slow ache spreading as he took in Lucia's expression the wonder, the peace, the fragile awe written so clearly on her face.

(No wonder people become addicted to this place…) he thought.

(It heals without ever touching.)

Alex cleared his throat softly, the sound deliberately quiet so it wouldn't disturb the stillness of the sanctuary.

"Lucia. Astrid."

His voice was low but firm, carrying just enough weight to draw their attention without breaking the sacred atmosphere. Lucia flinched slightly at the sound of her name and immediately lowered her raised hand, while Astrid turned her head, her posture straightening as her sharp eyes focused on him.

Alex took a small step forward, his expression serious now. His shoulders squared, and his gaze swept briefly across the sacred tree before returning to them.

"This place is sacred," he said, his tone steady and unwavering. "Do not damage the great tree. Do not take anything from it. Not a leaf. Not a branch." He paused for emphasis, letting the words settle. "If Eldergleam is harmed, nature itself will grow angry."

Lucia's body went stiff.

Her shoulders tensed, and her fingers curled instinctively into her palm. She swallowed hard and looked up at Alex with wide, uncertain eyes. "…Angry?" she asked quietly. "How… angry?"

For a brief moment, Alex's gaze shifted away from her.

His eyes moved toward the shadows tangled among Eldergleam's massive roots dark, quiet spaces where the emerald light did not fully reach. His jaw tightened just slightly before he spoke again.

"Guardian spirits will appear," he said calmly. "Dryads." His voice lowered. "They will attack without hesitation."

Lucia sucked in a sharp breath.

She recoiled instantly, pulling her hand back to her chest as if she'd almost touched fire. Her head bobbed up and down in quick, frantic nods, her eyes wide with alarm.

"I I won't touch it!" she said hurriedly. "I promise! I really promise!"

Astrid watched the exchange with a raised eyebrow, her lips curving into a faint, amused smile. She glanced at Alex for a second clearly puzzled about how he knew such specific details but chose not to question it.

Instead, she reached out and gently patted Lucia's head, her touch warm and reassuring.

"You heard him," Astrid said lightly, her voice calm and teasing. "Hands to yourself."

Lucia nodded once more, this time more firmly, clutching her hands together as if sealing her promise, while the quiet glow of Eldergleam continued to shimmer silently above them.

They spent their time there in quiet peace.

Time seemed to slow within the sanctuary, each moment stretching gently, unhurried. Lucia crouched near the edge of one of the clear pools, her knees drawn close to her chest as she leaned forward. Her fingers hovered just above the water, never quite touching, while her eyes followed the softly glowing leaves as they drifted across the surface. Each leaf moved lazily, carried by the faintest ripple, leaving behind shimmering trails of green light.

When Lucia caught sight of her own reflection in the water her eyes wide with wonder, her cheeks slightly flushed she let out a small, surprised laugh. The sound was light and pure, ringing softly through the cave before fading into the stillness. She covered her mouth for a second, as if embarrassed by the noise, then laughed again, quieter this time, her shoulders bouncing slightly with the motion.

Moments later, she stood and stepped back beneath the sacred tree.

Slowly, carefully, she spun in place, her feet tracing small circles on the stone floor. Her arms lifted slightly at her sides, fingers spread, as though she were trying to catch the glowing light drifting down from above. Her movements were hesitant at first, then freer each turn filled with awe, as if she feared that if she didn't absorb every detail, the beauty around her might slip away.

Alex and Astrid stood side by side a short distance away.

Alex had his arms loosely crossed, but his posture was relaxed, his shoulders no longer tense. His gaze never left Lucia, and a faint, almost imperceptible smile rested on his lips. Astrid stood close enough that their shoulders nearly touched, one hand resting casually on her hip as she watched Lucia with softened eyes.

Lucia's face was radiant truly radiant.

Not the cautious, guarded smile she used to wear.

Not the politeness shaped by fear and survival.

But pure, unrestrained happiness.

Astrid let out a slow, quiet breath, her chest rising and falling gently. Her voice was barely above a whisper, as if she didn't want to disturb the moment.

"…She's never experienced anything like this before, has she?"

Alex shook his head slowly, his expression thoughtful. "Judging from her scars," he said softly, his eyes darkening for just a moment before returning to Lucia, "and how genuinely happy she looks… probably not." He glanced around the sanctuary, taking in the glowing leaves, the still water, the ancient tree standing in silent grace. "…I have to admit," he added, "this place is truly beautiful."

Astrid reached out then, her movements unhurried.

Her fingers slid into Alex's hand, lacing gently with his. She gave his hand a soft squeeze, grounding and warm. When she spoke, her voice was calm and sincere.

"It is," she agreed quietly. "But I'm happier because I'm here with you, sharing this moment."

She shifted her gaze back to Lucia, who was still laughing softly beneath the sacred tree, spinning once more before stopping to stare upward in awe.

"And with Lucia too," Astrid added.

Alex didn't reply.

He simply squeezed Astrid's hand in return, watching Lucia as the emerald light continued to The soft green light continued to fall around Lucia like a blessing.

Suddenly, Lucia ran toward them, her steps light yet hurried. Her cheeks were flushed, her breath slightly uneven, and her eyes sparkled as if tiny stars were dancing within them. She stopped right in front of Alex and Astrid, pointing upward with trembling excitement.

"Mister Alex! Big Sister Astrid! Look!" she exclaimed, her voice quivering with joy. "It's like… like the tree is glowing just for us!"

Something inside Alex's chest cracked but it wasn't pain. It was warmth. Gentle, overwhelming warmth.

He immediately knelt down, lowering himself to her height. Astrid followed, kneeling beside him, the hem of her clothes brushing against the cool stone floor. Astrid's expression softened, her eyes calm and affectionate.

Astrid spoke first, her voice gentle, almost a whisper so as not to disturb the sacred stillness.

"Lucia… there's something we want to tell you."

Lucia blinked a few times, then tilted her head slightly. Confusion flickered across her face, but her eyes stayed fixed on them, listening with complete attention.

Alex took a deep breath, his chest rising and falling slowly.

"We've been thinking about this for a long time," he said softly but firmly. "And we've made a decision."

Lucia's fingers tightened around the hem of her shirt. "A-about… what?" she asked in a small voice.

Astrid smiled warmly, her expression sincere and resolute.

"About you."

Alex met Lucia's gaze, his eyes filled with certainty no hesitation at all.

"Lucia," he said quietly, "we want to adopt you."

The world seemed to stop.

Lucia froze in place.

Her eyes widened slowly. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She looked at Alex, then at Astrid, back and forth again and again as if waiting for one of them to laugh and say it was only a joke.

"A-adopt… me?" she whispered.

Astrid nodded gently. "If you want us to."

Lucia's knees gave out.

She collapsed, both hands covering her mouth as tears streamed down her cheeks. Her shoulders shook violently as her sobs broke free not from sadness, but from happiness far too overwhelming to contain.

"R-really…?" she cried. "I… I can stay… forever?"

Alex reached out and wrapped her in a careful, gentle embrace, as if holding something fragile and precious.

"Forever," he said firmly.

Astrid embraced them both, her arms encircling Lucia and Alex. She lowered her head and rested her chin softly atop Lucia's hair.

"You're not alone anymore."

Lucia clutched their clothes tightly, crying openly as she repeated the same words again and again.

"Thank you… thank you… thank you…"

Beneath the sacred Eldergleam, surrounded by silence and gentle light, a family was born.

As they left Eldergleam Sanctuary, Lucia walked between them, holding Alex's and Astrid's hands tightly, as if afraid that letting go would make everything disappear.

The journey home felt different.

Warmer.

Lighter.

And in Lucia's heart, a memory was carved forever

not only of a beautiful place,

but of the day she found a family.
