Season 2
Chapter 9
The Place It Began
The road back felt shorter.
Or maybe—
Cain just wasn't paying attention to it.
The mansion gates stood open behind them.
Ahead—
the path stretched forward, cutting through quiet fields and scattered trees.
The academy wasn't far.
But the air had already changed.
No one spoke for a while.
Rei walked slightly ahead, hands in his pockets, glancing back every few seconds.
"…You're serious about this?"
Cain didn't slow.
"Yes."
Rei exhaled through his nose.
"…Of course you are."
Aera walked on the other side.
Closer than usual.
Not touching.
But near enough to react.
"…You just collapsed," she said quietly.
"I'm fine."
"You weren't."
A small pause.
Cain didn't argue.
Behind them, Liora walked in silence.
Her gaze rested on Cain's back.
Unmoving.
Measuring.
She had already understood.
This wasn't curiosity.
This wasn't recklessness.
This was intent.
The path narrowed as they moved forward.
Stone replaced dirt.
Familiar structures rose into view.
The academy.
Tall gates.
Cold stone.
Silent walls that had seen far more than they revealed.
For a moment—
no one moved.
Rei let out a low whistle.
"…Feels different."
It did.
The air wasn't heavy.
Not like the garden.
Not like the moment Cain collapsed.
But there was something beneath it.
Subtle.
Buried.
Waiting.
Cain stepped forward first.
The gates didn't stop them.
They never did.
Inside—
the academy was quieter than usual.
Classes hadn't started yet.
Or maybe they had ended early.
Either way—
the halls felt empty.
Their footsteps echoed faintly.
Aera's gaze shifted constantly.
Walls.
Corners.
Shadows.
"…I don't like this," she muttered.
Rei glanced at her.
"You never like anything dangerous."
"…This isn't normal dangerous."
Cain didn't stop walking.
He already knew where to go.
The path didn't need memory.
His body moved on its own.
Down the corridor.
Left turn.
Another hallway.
The deeper they went—
the quieter it became.
Until—
they reached it.
The containment area.
The door stood closed.
Heavy.
Sealed.
The air here was different.
Not cold.
Not heavy.
But tense.
Like something inside was pressing outward—
without moving.
Rei frowned.
"…This is it?"
Cain stopped in front of the door.
"…Yes."
The moment he said it—
his shadow flickered.
Aera noticed immediately.
"…Cain."
The cat slipped out.
Not slowly this time.
It emerged sharply—
landing in front of him.
Its body was low.
Tense.
Eyes locked on the door.
Rei blinked.
"…Your cat's acting weird again."
"It knows," Cain said quietly.
"…Knows what?"
No answer.
Liora stepped forward.
Standing beside him now.
Her gaze moved from the door—
to the shadow beneath his feet—
then back again.
"…This is where it started."
Not a question.
A statement.
Cain nodded once.
The silence stretched.
Then—
he moved.
A hand reached forward.
The moment his fingers touched the door—
The air shifted.
Not violently.
Not suddenly.
But enough.
Aera's breath caught.
"…Did you feel that?"
Rei's expression tightened.
"…Yeah."
The cat hissed.
Sharp.
Loud.
Its shadow stretched unnaturally along the floor—
before snapping back into place.
Cain didn't pull his hand away.
"…It's here."
The words were quiet.
But certain.
Something answered.
Not a sound.
Not a voice.
A feeling.
From behind the door.
Calling.
Cain's grip tightened slightly.
White.
Endless.
"…Find the place where it began."
His eyes lowered.
"…I did."
Behind him—
Aera stepped closer.
"Wait."
He didn't turn.
"…If something happens—"
"It will."
She stopped.
Rei clicked his tongue.
"…At least say something reassuring."
Cain didn't respond.
Liora spoke instead.
"…We stay here."
Not a suggestion.
A decision.
Rei nodded once.
"…Yeah."
Aera didn't argue.
But her gaze didn't leave Cain.
The cat moved again.
Climbing up—
settling onto Cain's shoulder.
Still tense.
Still watching.
Cain exhaled slowly.
The door in front of him felt closer now.
Not physically.
But—
present.
Like it was no longer just a barrier.
But a threshold.
"…This time…"
A faint breath.
"…I won't stop halfway."
His hand pressed forward.
The seal reacted.
A low hum vibrated through the air.
The door began to open.
Slowly.
The space beyond it—
dark.
Deep.
Unseen.
The air that leaked out—
was colder.
Heavier.
Alive.
Aera's voice came out barely above a whisper.
"…Cain…"
He stepped forward.
And the moment he crossed the threshold—
The shadow beneath him twisted.
Violently.
The cat's claws dug into his shoulder.
The air snapped.
And something—
on the other side—
finally noticed him.
