Chapter 96 - The Path Back

The days after the burial passed without much noise.

People returned to their routines.

Fields were tended.

Tools were used.

Voices returned.

But not fully.

Something had shifted.

The mine wasn't spoken about as casually anymore.

And when it was—

Elios' name came with it.

"…He survived alone."

"…That many goblins…?"

"…It doesn't make sense."

The conversations stayed low.

Not meant for him.

But not hidden either.

Elios heard enough.

He didn't respond.

Didn't correct anything.

Because he didn't know what to say.

Or maybe—

he didn't care to.

He sat outside the house most of the time.

Not doing much.

Not talking.

Just…

there.

His body was healing.

Slowly.

The wounds had closed.

The pain had dulled.

But something else remained.

The silence inside him.

And beneath it—

that feeling.

Faint.

Unstable.

Still there.

Sometimes, when he moved—

it surfaced.

Just for a moment.

A shift in his body.

A slight alignment.

Then gone.

Like it was waiting.

For something.

Elios noticed.

But he didn't speak about it.

Didn't ask.

Didn't question.

Because deep down—

he already knew where it came from.

And where it led.

"…You should rest more."

The voice came from behind.

Elios didn't turn.

"I've been resting."

Elara stepped closer, stopping a few steps away from him.

"That's not what I meant."

He didn't respond.

A quiet moment passed between them.

"…You don't have to go back."

The words were calm.

Careful.

But direct.

Elios' fingers tightened slightly against his arm.

"…I didn't say I was."

"You didn't have to."

That made him look at her.

For the first time in a while.

She wasn't guessing.

She wasn't worried in the usual way.

She just… knew.

Elios held her gaze for a second.

Then looked away.

"…There are still goblins."

The words came out flat.

"…They'll come out again."

Elara didn't argue.

Because that was true.

"…Others can handle it."

Elios shook his head slightly.

"No."

A small pause.

"…Not like that."

He didn't explain further.

He didn't need to.

Elara watched him quietly.

"…And you think you can?"

Elios didn't answer immediately.

His gaze drifted slightly—

toward the path.

The one leading away from the village.

"…I have to."

The answer was quiet.

But firm.

Elara's expression didn't change much.

But her hand tightened slightly at her side.

"…You just came back."

"I didn't finish."

That was it.

Not anger.

Not emotion.

Just—

a fact.

Elara looked at him for a long moment.

"…You're not the same."

The words weren't accusing.

They weren't even surprised.

Just observed.

Elios didn't deny it.

Because he felt it too.

"…Maybe."

A pause.

"…That's why I have to go."

Elara didn't respond this time.

Because there was nothing left to say.

She turned slightly.

"…Mira won't understand."

Elios' expression didn't change.

"…I know."

That didn't stop him.

It didn't slow him down either.

Elara stood there for another second.

Then walked away.

Not stopping him.

Not agreeing.

Just—

leaving the choice to him.

Elios sat there for a while longer.

The village moved around him.

Normal.

Almost.

Then—

he stood.

Slowly.

His body didn't resist anymore.

It felt…

ready.

That feeling surfaced again.

Faint.

But clearer than before.

Not random.

Not accidental.

Waiting.

Elios picked up the blade resting near the wall.

The same one.

Still worn.

Still imperfect.

But familiar.

He adjusted his grip.

It felt natural now.

Like it belonged in his hand.

He didn't look back.

Not at the house.

Not at the village.

Because if he did—

he might hesitate.

And hesitation—

was what got them killed.

Elios stepped forward.

Toward the path.

Toward the mine.

Not rushed.

Not reckless.

But certain.

The wind moved lightly through the village behind him.

Carrying voices.

Carrying life.

Carrying everything he was leaving behind—

for now.

Elios didn't stop.

Because this time—

he wasn't going back to survive.

He was going back—

to finish something.

End.
