Chapter 144 - I'm Back

The dust kicked up by the spatial displacement drifted slowly across the

courtyard.

Rei kept his fists raised, wind mana swirling violently around his forearms.

Liora stood beside him, her own blade drawn, her eyes narrowed as she stared

into the settling fog. Aera burst through the heavy oak doors of the mansion,

stopping dead at the edge of the stone veranda, her breath caught in her throat.

The dust cleared.

A figure stood in the center of the training grounds.

He wore a dark academy coat, though the fabric was torn and stained with dried,

golden blood. His dual practice blades hung at his waist, the leather grips worn

and frayed. He didn't stand in a combat stance. His posture was relaxed, his

shoulders loose.

Cain.

For a long, suspended moment, no one moved.

Cain blinked against the afternoon sunlight. He looked around the courtyard. He

saw the weapon racks. He saw the stone bench. He saw the balcony where the Duke

had stood.

He took a slow, deep breath.

The air filled his lungs completely. There was no hollow ache. There was no

agonizing friction in his core. His mana circulated with flawless, frictionless

perfection. The heavy, dark reservoir of the Black Veil sat dormant at the base

of his spine, securely locked away.

He was whole.

A sudden, sharp chime echoed in his mind.

A translucent blue window popped into the air directly in front of his face. The

edges were smooth, the text rendering with a crisp, fluid elegance.

[ Notice: Spatial transfer complete. ] [ Observation: Your welcoming committee

appears highly aggressive. ] [ Suggestion: Say something before the vanguard

punches you in the face. ]

Cain stared at the blue box.

He blinked twice.

The system hadn't just returned. It had an opinion.

Before Cain could process the sheer absurdity of the text box, the sound of a

weapon hitting the dirt broke the silence.

Rei had dropped his practice sword.

The wind mana faded from his arms. He stared at Cain, his mouth opening and

closing as if he couldn't remember how words worked. He took a hesitant step

forward, then another, before letting out a loud, breathless laugh that sounded

suspiciously like a choke.

"You absolute bastard," Rei said, his voice cracking.

Liora lowered her blade. Her immaculate composure, the iron-clad discipline she

wore like armor every single day, finally fractured. Her hands trembled, and she

let out a long, shuddering exhale, closing her eyes as the crushing weight of

the last two months evaporated from her shoulders.

"Cain!"

The shout tore across the courtyard.

Aera didn't walk. She sprinted.

She flew down the stone steps, her boots kicking up dirt as she crossed the

training grounds. She didn't stop to check his mana. She didn't stop to ask if

he was an illusion.

She slammed into him.

Aera threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his ruined coat. She

held onto him with a desperate, terrifying strength, her shoulders shaking as

the tears she had held back for sixty days finally broke free.

Cain staggered back half a step from the impact, but his legs held perfectly.

He looked down at Aera, feeling the warmth of her tears soaking through his

collar. He looked up and saw Rei walking toward him, wiping his eyes with the

back of his sleeve while trying to maintain his smirk. He saw Alice standing

behind Rei, smiling softly. He saw Liora watching him, her eyes shining with a

profound, quiet relief.

[ Notice: Host's heart rate is elevating. ] [ Diagnosis: Emotional vulnerability

detected. ] [ Suggestion: Hug her back, you tactical idiot. ]

Cain dismissed the window with a thought.

Slowly, carefully, he raised his arms and wrapped them around Aera, returning

the embrace. He closed his eyes, resting his chin lightly against the top of her

head.

The war was over. The gods were gone.

He had survived.

Cain opened his eyes, looking at the people he had torn the world apart to

protect. The corners of his mouth lifted into a small, exhausted, but genuinely

warm smile.

"I'm back."
