Chapter 71: The Final Assault - Part 3
Steve
The source gate pulsed like infected wound in reality. Red energy bleeding through dimensional barrier, organic matter growing around it like tumor.
And through it, something vast was watching.
The Mind Flayer manifested.
Not fully. Just shadow form, massive tentacles reaching through the gate, presence so overwhelming my corruption resonated in agony.
"TRAVELER."
Its voice wasn't sound. It was sensation, feeling, knowledge forced directly into my mind.
"YOU'VE DONE THIS BEFORE. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU FAILED? RESET? TRIED AGAIN? I SEE ECHOES OF OTHER TIMELINES IN YOUR CORRUPTED MIND. ALTERNATE ATTEMPTS. DIFFERENT CHOICES. SAME INEVITABLE OUTCOME."
"You're wrong," I said. Phase 3 keeping me standing despite the crushing presence. "This time is different."
"IS IT? THE TEACHER STILL DIES. THE BOY STILL SUFFERS. THE GIRL STILL SEES DARK FUTURES. YOU DELAY. YOU ADAPT. BUT FATE REASSERTS. I AM INEVITABLE."
"Then watch me prove you wrong."
I moved toward the gate, explosives ready. El, Hopper, and Billy formed defensive line behind me.
Demo-dogs poured from side passages. Hundreds. Final desperate defense.
Hopper
The demo-dog wave was suicide charge. Creatures sacrificing themselves to stop us from reaching the gate.
"Form up!" I roared. Shotgun firing, Billy's machete swinging, El throwing creatures with telekinesis.
But there were too many. We couldn't hold this position indefinitely.
Bob's voice crackled through comms: "Reinforcements incoming your position! East tunnel, twenty demo-dogs flanking!"
"EAST!" I pivoted, fired. Billy was already there, cutting through the ambush.
"Steve, how much longer?" El gasped, nose hemorrhaging.
"Two minutes. Keep them off me!"
Two minutes holding against hundreds. Impossible odds.
But we've survived impossible before.
Steve
Planted charges around the gate's perimeter. C-4 from Dr. Owens, enough to collapse this entire chamber. Phase 3 perception guided my hands—precise placement, maximum efficiency.
The Mind Flayer's tentacles lashed at me. I dodged, corruption flaring in response to its proximity.
"YOU CANNOT DESTROY ME, TRAVELER. EVEN IF YOU SEVER THIS CONNECTION, I EXIST BEYOND YOUR REACH. ETERNAL. PATIENT. I WILL RETURN."
"Maybe. But not today. Not here. Not while I'm still breathing."
"YOUR BREATHING IS TEMPORARY. YOUR CORRUPTION IS SPREADING. SOON YOU'LL BE MINE COMPLETELY. JOIN ME. STOP FIGHTING. ACCEPT INEVITABILITY."
"Never."
Final charge placed. Timer armed. Sixty seconds.
Behind me, the team fought desperately. El collapsed to one knee, exhausted. Hopper's shotgun clicked empty. Billy bled from a dozen wounds but kept fighting.
Time to go.
Billy
Demo-dog broke through El's weakened telekinetic barrier. Massive creature, lunging straight at Steve's back while he activated the timer.
I saw it happen in slow motion. The creature's trajectory, Steve's exposed position, the certainty that he wouldn't react in time.
Not him. Not after everything he's done for me.
I threw myself between them.
The demo-dog's claws tore through my chest. Deep. Mortal. I felt ribs crack, organs rupture, life bleeding out.
But Steve was safe.
I hit the ground, vision darkening. Heard Steve scream my name.
Worth it, I thought. Redemption paid in full.
Steve
"BILLY!"
I caught him as he fell, corruption-enhanced speed letting me reach him before he hit ground. His chest was destroyed, claws had gone deep, blood everywhere.
No. No. Not after everything. Not after his redemption. Not like this.
Pain Heal activated at maximum. I grabbed his wounds, didn't care that it would kill me, just focused on pulling his injuries into myself.
The agony was beyond description. Mortal wounds transferring, organs rupturing inside me, ribs cracking through sympathetic damage. I screamed, kept healing anyway.
Billy's chest knitted together. Slowly. Agonizingly. But healing.
"Steve, stop!" Hopper grabbed me. "You'll die—"
"HE DOESN'T DIE! NOT TODAY!"
Pushed more power through Pain Heal than ever before. The corruption surged in response, spreading further, but I didn't care. Billy had thrown himself between me and death. Had proven his redemption absolute.
I'm not letting him die for me.
Final push. Billy gasped, eyes opening. The wounds sealed, scars forming.
"Debt paid," he whispered.
"You stupid bastard." My voice broke. "You didn't owe me anything."
"Yeah. I did. For showing me I could be someone else."
Hopper
Steve had absorbed mortal wounds. His corruption spread visibly, black veins racing across his body, but Billy was breathing. Alive.
"Thirty seconds!" Bob's voice urgent through comms. "GET OUT NOW!"
"Move!" I grabbed Billy, threw him over my shoulder. El stumbled, Steve caught her.
We ran. Demo-dogs swarmed after us, the Mind Flayer's tentacles lashing.
"YOU WILL NOT ESCAPE YOUR NATURE, TRAVELER! WE ARE INEVITABLE!"
Steve looked back one final time. "Maybe. But not today."
Twenty seconds.
