Chapter 80 - Chapter 80:  The Calm

Chapter 80: The Calm

Steve

New Year's Eve arrived with snow and celebration.

My house filled with found family—The Party sprawled across the living room playing D&D with Eddie DMing dramatically, El and Max giggling over something, Nancy and Jonathan cuddled on the couch, Barb helping Robin set up snacks, Hopper and Joyce dancing in the kitchen to Bob's choice of music, Billy talking quietly with Chrissy about redemption, even Dart curled up near Dustin's feet.

Everyone alive. Together. Safe.

Worth every sacrifice.

"You did this," Robin said, appearing beside me. "Created this family through sheer stubborn refusal to let anyone die."

"We did this. Team effort."

"Steve. Accept credit for once. You changed everything." She gestured at the room. "Bob's alive—should be dead. Barb's alive—was supposed to die. Billy's redeemed—should have stayed villain. Will's free—should be puppet. Your corruption scars—" she touched my silver-lined hand "—prove the cost."

"Silver now. Faded."

"But permanent. You'll always be marked by what you did."

"Good. Reminds me why I did it."

Joyce

Danced with Bob in Steve's kitchen, snow falling outside the window, music playing softly.

"March wedding?" Bob confirmed.

"March wedding. Spring. New beginnings." I touched his face. "You survived everything. Four close calls, Steve's obsessive protection, fate itself trying to claim you. And you're here."

"Steve made it possible."

"You made it possible by being worth saving. By being good, brave, genuine. Steve just recognized it and refused to accept your death." I kissed him. "I love you, Bob Newby. Future husband, Will's dad, Jonathan's stepdad, part of this impossible family."

"I love you too. Always will."

Through the window, I saw Steve on the balcony, Chrissy joining him. Two young people who'd faced horrors beyond comprehension and somehow survived to appreciate quiet moments.

Chrissy

Found Steve watching distant lights—the mall construction continuing even on New Year's Eve. Russians working night shifts, building toward Season 3 catastrophe.

"You're thinking about next time," I said.

"Always."

"Can you not? For ten minutes? Just celebrate what you accomplished?"

He turned to me, silver corruption scars catching moonlight. "I changed everything. Bob's alive, planning wedding. Barb's thriving. Billy's becoming good person. Will's free. You're safe from worst visions. We survived."

"But?"

"But Russians are still drilling. Mall's still being built. Season 3 still approaches. 248 days until Mind Flayer returns, Billy gets possessed in original timeline, Hopper 'dies.' Can't forget that."

"You can for tonight. Tonight we celebrate being alive." I wrapped arms around him. "You gave up your humanity saving everyone. Corruption scars, Phase 3 abilities, dimensional sensitivity. You sacrificed so much."

"Found better humanity. This family. This moment." He held me close. "Worth every sacrifice."

Hopper

Called everyone to the living room as midnight approached. "Countdown in sixty seconds!"

The family gathered—kids, teenagers, adults, one demo-dog, all crowded together in Steve Harrington's house.

"Fifty seconds!"

Bob checked his watch obsessively. Joyce laughed at him. Will and Jonathan flanked them, actual family now.

"Thirty seconds!"

El and Max held hands, giggling. Dustin practiced his countdown voice. Lucas and Mike argued about something stupid. Robin and Eddie debated New Year's resolutions.

"Ten! Nine! Eight!"

Everyone joined. Voices overlapping, excitement building.

"Three! Two! One! HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

Fireworks exploded outside. Couples kissed—Joyce and Bob, Nancy and Jonathan, Steve and Chrissy. The kids cheered. Dart clicked happily.

For one perfect moment, everything was right.

Steve

Watched fireworks paint the sky while holding Chrissy. Through the window, I caught distant construction lights—Russians working through New Year's.

Season 3 approached with geometric certainty. 248 days until July 4th, 1985. Until the Mind Flayer returned through Russian gate. Until Billy got possessed in original timeline. Until Hopper's "death."

But I'd changed so much already. Bob lived. Barb lived. Billy was redeemed. Will was free. My corruption had faded to silver scars—permanent marks but not spreading, not consuming.

I can change Season 3 too. Save Billy from possession. Keep Hopper alive. Stop the Mind Flayer again. I've done it once. Can do it again.

"What are you thinking?" Chrissy asked.

"That I love you. That this family is everything. That whatever comes next, we'll face it together."

"One apocalypse at a time?"

"One apocalypse at a time."

Eddie

Documented everything with my camera. The family celebrating, Steve and Chrissy on the balcony, fireworks reflecting in windows, Dart sleeping peacefully, Bob and Joyce dancing.

"For posterity," I announced. "When future generations ask how we survived dimensional invasion, I'll show them this. Found family. Trust. Love. Sacrifice."

"You're so dramatic," Robin said.

"Someone has to be! This is history!"

"This is teenagers celebrating New Year's."

"Same thing when those teenagers fought interdimensional monsters." I took another photo. "Steve Harrington saved Hawkins. Twice. And all it cost was his humanity, which he replaced with something better."

Robin smiled. "Put that in your chronicles."

"Already did."

Steve

2 AM. Everyone asleep throughout the house—The Party in sleeping bags, adults in guest rooms, couples cuddled on couches. Peaceful chaos.

I stood on the balcony one final time, watching snow fall over Hawkins. Silver corruption scars caught moonlight, permanent reminders of cost.

But everyone lived. Bob planned his wedding. Barb thrived at college applications. Billy worked toward redemption. Will was free. Chrissy's visions were controlled.

.

But tonight? Tonight we'd won. Changed fate. Saved everyone.

"Happy New Year, Hawkins," I whispered to the snowfall. "Let's see what 1985 brings."

Behind me, my found family slept peacefully. Safe. Together. Alive.

Because I'd refused to accept their deaths. Because I'd sacrificed pieces of myself to keep them whole. Because fate could be changed with enough preparation, enough determination, enough love.

The Dimensional Backpack sat at 65%. Fight Master Phase 3 hummed ready. Pain Heal had saved Billy's life. My corruption scars marked me permanently.

But my family survived. That was victory enough.

One apocalypse at a time. Season 2 beaten. Season 3 approaching.

Bring it on, I thought. We're ready.

The snow fell. The fireworks faded. Dawn approached.

And Steve Harrington—corrupted, scarred, transformed—stood guard over the people he'd saved.

Always preparing. Always protecting. Always counting down to the next battle.

But for now? For this moment?

Peace.
