Chapter 99: The Monster's Army - Part 1
Will
The vision hit at Mike's house, 9:23 AM. No warning, no gradual build—just sudden immersion in the Mind Flayer's perspective.
Massive. Three stories of merged flesh. Heather at the center, anchor point, barely recognizable under biomass growth. Thirty other hosts integrated, their bodies providing mass and mobility.
And it was moving. Northeast. Toward downtown. Toward the mall.
I collapsed. Mike caught me.
"Will! What's happening?"
"It's moving. The Spider Monster." My voice sounded distant. "Heading toward Starcourt."
Steve
My phone exploded with alerts. Will's vision, the Supernatural Detector spiking, my corruption scars burning.
Eleven called from the road—Joyce driving, Bob navigating, her voice strained from distance-sensing.
"I feel it. Very strong. Much bigger than before. It's... hunting something."
"The gate machine," I confirmed. "The Mind Flayer knows about the Russian operation. It's converging on the same location."
"How does it know?"
"Because I know. And my bridge-connection leaked information." My corruption pulsed. "It's been watching me, learning from me. Every thought about the Russians, every plan about the gate—it saw."
"Steve—"
"Doesn't matter now. How far out are you?"
"Twelve hours. Maybe less if we push." Joyce's voice in background: "We're pushing."
"Get here as fast as you can. When this converges—Russians, Mind Flayer, all of us—it'll be war."
Hopper
Steve's tactical assessment was grim. He stood over maps showing two convergence points collapsing into one.
"Mind Flayer is heading directly toward Starcourt. It knows the Russians are drilling a gate. It wants that portal for itself."
"How?" I demanded. "Russians are underground, secret facility—"
"It's connected to me. I know about the Russians. Through our bridge-link, it knows too." His corruption scars flared. "Every infiltration, every plan, every thought—it was watching. Learning."
"Jesus Christ, Steve—"
"I know. My fault. Should have realized the connection was two-way." His self-recrimination was brutal. "But the threat's the same regardless. Spider Monster reaches the mall in eight hours. If it's there when the Russians activate the gate—"
"Full dimensional breach. Mind Flayer pours through with unlimited reinforcements."
"Exactly. We have to stop the convergence."
Mike
Used Will's vision-memory to map the Flayed network. Thirty hosts, all converging toward the mall in coordinated pattern.
"It's not random movement," I said, marking positions. "It's tactical deployment. Surrounding the mall from multiple angles, preparing for siege."
"Or preparing to breach the Russian base during activation," Steve added. "The Mind Flayer is patient. It'll wait until the gate opens, then rush through with full force."
"So we have eight hours to stop it?"
"Or slow it enough that we can assault the Russian base without the Spider Monster interfering." Steve's tactical mind calculated options. "Eleven arrives in twelve. Gate activation is six days out. We need to collapse both timelines into one decisive battle."
"That's insane."
"That's necessary." He activated comms. "Nancy, Jonathan, Billy, Eddie—assemble at industrial district. We're intercepting the Spider Monster. Objective: delay its advance, buy time for Eleven's arrival."
Lucas
From my elevated position with binoculars, I tracked the Flayed network's movement. Thirty hosts, moving through Hawkins in perfect coordination.
Not individuals anymore. Extensions of single consciousness.
"They're learning," I reported via radio. "Avoiding streets with high visibility, using cover, moving in synchronized patterns. This isn't possession anymore. It's full hive-mind control."
"Confirmed," Steve's voice. "Mind Flayer has completed integration. They're not hosts with some autonomy. They're puppets with one controller."
"How do we fight that?"
"Carefully. And with overwhelming force when it matters." Steve's certainty was absolute. "Combat team deploying now. You're our eyes, Lucas. Keep tracking, keep updating. We need real-time intelligence."
"Copy that."
I watched the hosts converge. Heather leading, three-story biomass following. An army of possessed humans protecting dimensional monster.
