A mechanical, emotionless female voice sounded.
"Upgrade."
Raizen chose immediately.
The apprentice level was no longer sufficient.
White entries provided only minor boosts; green ones were decent.
After the upgrade, the white entry remained but turned gray, as if locked—yet its effect persisted.
[Upgrade Path One: Merge with "Lightning Release Genin (Green)," "Genjutsu Genin (Green)," and "Medical Genin (Green)" to upgrade to "Chakra Nature Transformation Master (Blue)."]
"The first blue entry…"
Raizen's eyes gleamed.
Upgrading two green entries wasn't impossible. He just needed to upgrade his existing white entries to green first.
Their upgrade conditions would likely involve "Yin" and "Yang."
"Medical ninjutsu won't be a problem. But genjutsu…"
Raizen frowned slightly.
Since Yakushi Nonou had taken him as a student, she would provide a complete curriculum.
Sharingan genjutsu also needed to be learned. While basic ones like "Genjutsu: Sharingan" could be instinctive, advanced ones such as "Demonic Illusion: Shackle Stakes," "Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change," "Izanami," and "Izanagi" required proper study.
These were clan inheritances. Trying to self-teach without guidance would take forever.
Sasuke's limited use of the Sharingan's basic functions showed how crippling the lack of proper instruction could be.
In the end, he only knew basic Sharingan genjutsu.
If he had learned "Izanagi" beforehand, the outcome at the Valley of the End against Naruto might have been different.
To learn those techniques, he would need to apply to the Uchiha clan.
Many of them required seniority. Even if he could learn them, waiting out the eligibility period would take too much time.
With the ninja world war approaching, there simply wasn't time.
Even if restrictions were lifted during wartime, Raizen wouldn't have the leisure to study.
"Never mind."
Raizen shook his head.
He could just learn some ordinary genjutsu to upgrade the entry later.
Maybe mastering several would even grant an entry for proficiency in multiple genjutsu types.
He arrived at the rundown courtyard, quickly cleared the newly grown weeds, and returned inside to train.
Thanks to Uchiha Uzuki, his ocular power had increased, and "Lightning Release: Iron Body" progressed by leaps and bounds.
Before, he had only barely been able to control chakra safely enough to temper his scalp.
Now, Raizen handled it with ease—even his eyelids could be trained.
His entire body could now be coated in electricity, making his skin tougher than ever.
…
"What the hell was that guy?!"
Sakai Nobuo shoved his hands in his pockets and spat on the ground.
"Who could stand working with someone like that?"
"Don't be mad. It's just that Kakashi's a genius. Even his team leader couldn't stand him anymore—he's about to drop out of the team."
Mizuno Toshiya comforted his friend.
Their mission had gone wrong, turning a C-rank into B-rank difficulty.
Yet Kakashi had insisted on continuing the mission, abandoning his injured teammate on the spot.
"They're talking about Kakashi?"
Obito carried a green cloth bag. Finals were over; he had to return the books.
Nohara Rin walked beside him.
"Um… excuse me, are you talking about Hatake Kakashi?"
Nohara Rin hesitated before asking the two shinobi ahead.
Obito turned his head.
He was curious too.
"Who're you?"
Sakai Nobuo looked down at Nohara Rin and Obito.
"I'm Kakashi's classmate from the ninja academy."
"Then you must know how annoying he is. Being in the same class as someone like that makes missions impossible."
Sakai Nobuo's tone was harsh. His opinion of Kakashi was clearly terrible.
"What happened?"
Nohara Rin's heart tightened. She asked quickly.
"That guy—whether his teammate is injured or they're surrounded by enemies—he ignores it all and prioritizes the mission."
"Exactly. Who'd want to team up with someone like that?"
Mizuno Toshiya nodded in agreement.
"Let me warn you: if you ever get teamed up with him, be careful."
With that, Sakai Nobuo pulled his friend away.
"Kakashi's become like that?"
Obito said in shock.
Back then, Kakashi always talked about "comrades" and even played kick-the-can with them.
"Did Kakashi's father affect him this much?"
Nohara Rin murmured to herself.
"Rin, do you know something?"
Obito asked.
He felt like everyone knew something he didn't.
"…A little."
Nohara Rin shook her head.
"Can you tell me?"
Obito pressed.
"I… I have something to do. And this is Kakashi's private matter. I don't want to talk about him behind his back. See you tomorrow, Obito."
At the fork in the road, Rin said goodbye to Obito.
