Chapter 130: Self-Sufficient? Isn't This Just Wilderness Survival?
"We're still kids! I'm calling the Federation police!"
"Life imprisonment!"
Jiang Chen shook his head.
If it had been someone else peeking at Huo Yun'er, he might've beaten that person senseless.
No one was allowed to even think about it.
But if it involved Gu Yue—he'd let it slide.
After all, aside from Wu Zhangkong—who was already out of the picture—no one could possibly win the heart of the proud Silver Dragon King.
He hadn't expected Qian Gu Dongfeng to enroll his own grandson into the academy as well.
But thinking about it, it wasn't surprising.
The Qian Gu clan represented both the Federation's loyalty and its ambition. To prove support for the new university, of course Dongfeng would send Qian Gu Zhangting to Douluo University.
But winning Gu Yue's heart?
That was a clown's dream.
Their training base was in a mountain region near the Star Dou Great Forest—technically a military stronghold.
Though humans and soul beasts were at peace, the Federation couldn't afford to drop its guard.
Such bases existed to ensure security and public confidence. Most citizens still lacked martial souls; they couldn't all be soul beast sympathizers.
Sima Jinchi's voice was solemn. "From now on, your class forms a single squad. You'll be under strict supervision and must remain alert to possible soul beast attacks from Mount Phoenix."
"Be warned—the soul beasts here are ferocious, not as friendly as the legacy soul spirits you're used to."
"Now, hand in all your communication devices and soul spirit transmitters. During military training, fairness must be maintained. I trust you understand."
"Teacher Wu Zhangkong will safeguard your soul spirit transmitters."
Hearing that, everyone complied without hesitation, handing over their devices.
Except for the Snow Empress, Jiang Chen, and Tang Wulin, all others carried one.
Tang Wulin looked surprised. "Xie Xie, you have a transmitter too? How come I've never seen your legacy soul spirit?"
Xie Xie rolled his eyes. "You think I can just summon it for fun?"
"Even if it's a legacy soul spirit, it's still a soul beast. Someone like me isn't worth its time."
"Besides, every time I call mine, my ancestor complains about the cost of energy. You think I'd summon it just to chat?"
Others nodded in agreement—it wasn't like these soul spirits were their personal pets.
Their ancestors allowed them the connection mainly because of generational offerings and obligations. Constantly summoning them only irritated their elders.
"I'll issue each of you specialized Federation communications devices," Sima Jinchi continued. "They'll allow intra-squad contact and record your performance in real time."
On Douluo Continent, basic communications were maintained by the Evil Eye clan, who handled the network system.
At Shrek, communication devices were allowed in the Outer Court but banned in the Inner Court to prevent leaks.
Advanced models existed—like the custom-designed Evil Eye devices Jiang Chen used, each engraved with a unique personal code.
Essentially a private line, exclusive to one user.
Tang Wulin's and Na'er's units were gifts from him; Huo Yun'er's came from the Huo family. The Snow Empress owned No. 003 herself.
As for Gu Yue, her registered number was far beyond the core listings—she didn't appear in the fierce beast registry at all.
When the Evil Eye network was created, no one had even considered her existence.
Still, she had a dedicated private connection.
Everyone obediently turned in their devices—even Tang Wulin. Jiang Chen smirked quietly. Such an honest kid.
It didn't matter, anyway.
His private system, though differently built, worked on the same Eye-coded basis—fingerprint and iris-recognition anchored by unique network follow-ups.
Meaning, even if his device changed, his linked Evil Eye service would continue to follow him.
Yet—
He didn't hand his real one in.
Instead, he casually offered a spare.
"Now then! Time to eat!"
When it was mealtime, everyone froze.
A single huge pot.
Then crates of frozen fish.
"What's this? We have to cook it ourselves?!"
All thirty students stared in disbelief.
Military training?
No—this was wilderness survival!
If hunting soul beasts weren't off-limits, they'd probably have been told to catch their own food.
"This is an essential survival lesson," Sima Jinchi said flatly.
"Because of certain considerations, the foraging test was canceled. You'll receive chilled fish instead. As for cooking—it's up to you."
He drew a golden blade and, with two swift strokes, sliced a frozen fish cleanly into pieces. Then he slammed the blade into a nearby tree—
Crack.
The trunk split, splinters forming sharp skewers that pierced neatly through the fish slices.
Fire ignited.
Roasted fish began to sizzle.
Everyone stared, stunned.
"You have one hour!" Sima Jinchi said casually.
The squads immediately scattered into teams.
"Time to show off your swordsmanship," the Snow Empress said, cold eyes focusing on Jiang Chen. She unsheathed her Snow God Flute, and beams of icy sword light flashed.
Like Sima Jinchi, she reduced crates of fish into uniform fillets in an instant.
"Gu Yue, give me some fire."
You bastard.
Gu Yue nearly cursed out loud but begrudgingly flicked her fingers, lighting the fire anyway.
Sensing the awkward tension, Xu Xiaoyan and Huo Yun'er quickly spoke up. "Sister Xue'er, Sister Gu Yue, you two are amazing!"
"Stay put—we'll do the roasting!"
"Sister Ouyang, care for some grilled fish?"
Tang Wulin—apparently unfazed by last night's scolding—walked over with a freshly grilled piece and offered it to Ouyang Zixin.
She smiled and shook her head. "I've got one already."
"Tang Wulin!"
Mu Xi ground the words out between clenched teeth, nearly stabbing her skewer through his head.
So much attention for Senior Sister Ouyang—what about her?
Was she not a senior too?!
Tang Wulin shuddered visibly. "H-here, Senior Sister!"
"Hmph."
Mu Xi glared sharply, snatched the fish, and bit down hard—like punishing him through her teeth. Her sharp little canine glittered with menace, sending chills down Tang Wulin's back.
"Here, Ancestor!"
Unlike Tang Wulin's nervous gestures, Jiang Chen looked utterly at ease.
Huo Yun'er held two grilled fish, smiling brightly.
One for Ancestor, one for herself.
"Ancestor—"
"Huh?"
Before she could offer it, Gu Yue snatched Jiang Chen's portion right out of her hand.
Huo Yun'er: ???
What are you doing?!
She wanted to curse but restrained herself, forcing a strained smile. "Here then, Ancestor, this one's for you!"
But once again, before she could deliver it, the Snow Empress took it from her as well.
Ah!
Such bullying!
