Chapter 558 - Advancing into the Warp

This was the first time the Imperial forces had engaged in a true fleet collaboration with the Iron Men. The shipboard systems engineered by the Iron Men proved far more stable and responsive than any construct forged by the Adeptus Mechanicus. While the Tech-Priests could find no trace of a Machine Spirit, they were nonetheless exposed to an expanse of data unlike anything they had ever witnessed.

Under normal circumstances, when a Tech-Priest interfaces with an Imperial vessel, they are met with a torrent of violent data streams. The state of this data is tethered to the temperament of the ship's Machine Spirit; a "docile" spirit might soothe the flow, protecting the priest's psyche from being shattered by the sheer volume of information. Conversely, a volatile Machine Spirit could whip up a data-maelstrom, pushing the priest to the brink of insanity. In such moments, the only salvation lay in the rhythmic chanting of binary canticles, a desperate attempt to remain anchored within the chaotic tide and avoid being swept away or fragmented.

The systems on ships reforged by the Iron Men, however, were an anomaly. Unlike the cold, hollow silence of Necron equipment, the data-maelstroms here were forcibly channelled into strictly defined, rigid circuits. Every chaotic, rampant stream was governed by a regulated, orderly architecture. Within this intangible data-space, it felt as though countless unseen hands were at work, ruthlessly forcing any stray stream back into its designated path. Any data flow exhibiting error or divergence was instantly corrected, and those that drifted too far were torn asunder, reduced to digital debris, and purged.

To the Tech-Priests, this was no longer a primordial ocean of raw data; it had been reforged into a high-speed interstellar superhighway – disciplined, rule-bound, and terrifyingly efficient.

The Iron Men, seemingly aware of the Tech-Priests' peculiar compulsion to physically jack themselves into data systems, had gone so far as to install specialized access ports. For the first time, these priests discovered they could manifest virtual avatars within the data-space, a sensation as miraculous as becoming the Machine Spirit itself. Many were instantly consumed by this experience, finding the feeling of total, omnipotent control over the vessel intoxicating, akin to the sublime synergy of a Titan Princeps.

In reality, however, the system was a filter: logical, optimized directives from the priests were executed instantly, while cryptic or nonsensical commands were rejected by the system core. This was not the work of a true artificial intelligence, but rather a deeply ancient paradigm. The system operated on a rigid, immutable hierarchy of master-commands; only those inputs conforming to its strict parameters could trigger an execution.

This instruction set was exhaustive, covering everything from the firing-solutions of an automated heavy stubber to the complex macro-cannon deflection angles, navigational trajectories, and predictive drift analysis. These precise, high-speed command sets allowed the Tech-Priests and ship operators to respond to the fleet commander's intent with unprecedented efficiency.

Guided by this unified data-link system, the ships of the White Scars and Space Wolves formed four columns, trailing cautiously in the wake of the Void Sword. Even with the immense bulk of the Titan-class ship eclipsing much of their forward visual field, they could track the path ahead clearly through the shared data-link.

In terms of velocity, the Void Sword was not fast. Compared to the sleek, nimble Imperial vessels, it could even be described as ponderous. Yet, the massive energy shield, cradling the vessel in a layer of defensive lattice over a hundred kilometers thick, afforded the smaller ships a sense of absolute security. The void shields of the Imperium were fundamentally incompatible with the Iron Men's energy-shield technology, and Axion could not integrate them into a seamless, unified bubble as he did with his own fleet.

But this was no obstacle. The Imperial vessels were small enough that, by simply hovering in the shadow of the Void Sword, they remained entirely encased within the Titan-ship's own protective envelope. Throughout the transit, the Tech-Priests aboard the Imperial ships were in a constant state of awe. The sheer astronomical energy consumption required to maintain such a massive, thick, and expansive shield system was staggering.

Under the vanguard of the Void Sword, the White Scars and Space Wolves bore witness for the first time to the Land-class Star Forts the Iron Men had constructed around the Eye of Terror, as well as the colossal weapon arrays interspersed between them. As the fleet approached, they saw the Mechanicus Doomstar Cannon mid-fire, its beam lancing out to strike an unidentified warp-signature. Even in this chaotic region of space, the scale of that radiance was blinding.

The Void Sword, however, did not break its stride. It led the fleet almost brushing against the fringes of that energy beam, plunging headlong toward the Eye.

Normally, a ship entering the Warp requires the tear of an engine-induced rift in the reality-curtain. The Eye of Terror, however, required no such effort. The reality-curtain here had already collapsed; this great, cosmic scar was not a mere rupture, but a deep and jagged wound. From this point, one could not only enter the shallow Immaterium but also plunge deeper into the roiling currents of the Warp, venturing into those layers of the deep-Warp whose true depth remained unknown.

The Void Sword recalibrated its energy shields and deployed a massive Geller Field. The expansive barrier unfurled, creating a vast spherical pocket that forcibly encompassed every single Imperial ship. Countless flows of warp-energy lashed against the Geller Field, blooming into myriad brilliant light-spots, yet such impacts were nothing to the Titan-class vessel.

The environment began to shift violently, and the perception of space itself was twisted and warped. The Navigators on the Imperial ships, overcome by primeval terror, curled into fetal balls, rendered utterly useless. Alarms screamed across every ship in the fleet, only to be silenced moments later.

"Unified data-module load complete."

The auspex scanners and various sensor arrays on the Imperial ships were forcibly overridden and shut down. From that moment, all telemetry and parameters were streamed from the Void Sword. By synchronizing the fleet to a single, identical data-source, the risk of losing any ship to the Warp's disorientation was minimized. The auxiliary navigation systems were now slaved to the Titan-ship's synchronized data, constantly calibrating against its drift. The gargantuan bulk of the Titan-ship itself served as the ultimate navigational reference; unless a ship drifted tens of thousands of kilometers off-course, the probability of falling behind was negligible.

Here, the sky was no longer the familiar, cold black of realspace. Swirls of warp-energy, thick as fog, roiled in every direction. Amidst the surging tide, a massive cosmic void appeared to loom in the distance, from which raw warp-energy erupted in a furious, unending torrent. It looked like the high-pressure plumes of a deep-sea volcanic eruption, pumping pressurized ash and smoke into the currents of an abyss.

Amidst the battering of the mist-like warp-fogs, the Void Sword's immense Geller Field was laid bare in all its glory. The boundary of the nearest warp-haze remained kilometers away, held at bay by the field, as the impact of the Chaos-energies against the barrier ignited sheets of brilliance, crackling like electrical arcs.

Deep within the swirling haze, one could almost imagine the shifting, gargantuan silhouettes of ancient, nameless things moving in the dark. It was a sight that defied comprehension.
