Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Useless Ability

"You never listen do you" Dylan hissed as he kicked Liam in the chest leaving a clear and dirty boot print in the center of his chest.

Liam fell to the ground leaning on his side. He released a pained groan. His dark hair drooping over his sea green eyes.

Liam had a small and frail body... Too frail for an 18 year old.

"Its really hard to with you shouting half the time" Liam's voice came out labored as he tried to pull air into his lungs.

Dylan scowled. He ran his fingers through his dirty blonde hair in mild irritation.

Why didn't this fool Liam listen to him? He was Dylan Crow, sole heir to the Crow family's Beast Weapon empire that had a vast majority of influence in the Hunter Society. On top of that he had awakened an ability with S-Rank potential.

He should be respected. His words should be low!

In anger he lashed out with another kick right into Liam's chest.

Liam wheezed. The air forced out of him. His ribs ached threatening to break.

"Ah! Fuck!" Liam clutched onto his chest. Tears threatened to spill from his eyes. "Son of a_" Another kick interrupted him. This time to the chin.

Liam's brain rattled. He's vision spun. He felt some of his teeth loosen and tasted blood on his tongue. Liam's world was filled with pain. He couldn't even make out which way was up and which was down.

But he did feel his collar taken roughly before he was lifted of the floor. For a moment Liam thought he was flying, then his back slammed into the cold wall.

He was held there, trapped beneath Dylan's arm. His feet dangled off the ground as he came face to face with Dylan's stupidly handsome face. His high cheekbones and a well defined jaw that would no doubt become more chiseled as he grew older. It was his eyes that took the cake though. Hypnotic crystal blue eyes.

'No wonder girls can swoon over this bastard'

Dylan then picked him up by the scruff of his collar and pressed him up against a wall.

As Liam met his gaze Dylan expected to see fear.

Instead he saw within them the dosed flame of rage, a smoldering furnace barely suppressed.

Liam had been angry at the world for a while now. Everywhere he went he was scorned and belittled. Treated as though he was worth nothing and for what.

Just because his ability didn't seem to match up with those of his peers?

Soon a comforting sort of warmth swept through his entire body dulling the pain that had disoriented him. Soon the bruise from his chin faded and disappeared.

Dylan saw that and the corner of his mouth curled upwards.

"Would you look at that" Dylan said.

Liam cursed.

This was his awakened ability. It granted him healing from any injury inflicted upon him as long as it wasn't too severe. It also consumed the Aether he had stored in his body... And he didn't have a lot.

Dylan drove a knee into his gut.

Cough!

Liam leaned forward. His eyes stung with tears as he heaved dry air and spat out saliva. Just when Liam thought it wouldn't get worse he felt large fingers wrap around his throat.

Dylan pushed him up against the locker cutting off his air supply.

"I won't say this again. Stay away from her you hear me" Dylan voice came off with a low growl. "People like you don't deserve the attention she's giving you"

Liam couldn't help the shiver that ran down his spine. Still a surge of defiance swept through him as he said:

"And you do?"

Dylan's response was immediate. "Yes. Its flies like you who should know their place"

As though to make a point, he wrapped a hand around Liam's throat and before Liam could think a searing heat radiated off it.

Liam's eyes widened. 'Wait don't tell me... '

Then there was only pain. The heat from Dylan's hand burned his skin. Smoke rose together with the smell of burning flesh.

Liam's mouth opened in a soundless scream as tears gathered in the corner of his eyes. The feeling of having your skin burnt was excruciating.

On instinct he brought his hands to Dylan's arms trying to dig his fingernails through his skin.

The action felt futile but Liam didn't give up. Pain fueling his efforts, he clawed and clawed. The burning sensation on his neck getting worse and worse until...

He shed blood.

It wasn't that deep of a wound, barely scratching off the top of the skin, but it was enough to cause Dylan pain.

Dylan quickly withdrew his hand as though it had been on a hot plate on the stove.

As Liam fell to the floor he thought he heard him wince which brought a small smile to his lips, a smile that disappeared as soon as his hands instinctively went to touch the wound on his neck The burns were superficial at best but it was the first time Liam had ever been burnt before.

"I'll stop here today but the next time I see you close to her again it'll be so much worse. Flies like you should know your place better" Dylan's face seemed to darken as he walked away. "Oh and if you have any ambitions about going to Star University, I suggest you don't come for the trials. I hear its prone to accidents"

Dylan's voice faded as he stepped out of the room. Liam's heavy breathing becoming the only sound that emanated in the cold, still, dark classroom.
