Chapter 113 - Heirs and Whispers

Heirs and Whispers

The nursery suite at the House of Mercy was a masterpiece of calming aesthetics—pale seafoam walls, recessed amber lighting, and the rhythmic, synchronized hum of state-of-the-art monitors. It was a combination of a comfortable retreat and an efficient NICU.

It smelled of sterilized linen and the faint, milky sweetness of newborns. And it had comfy seating and quiet areas to induce bonding and stimulate mental growth for babies.

Gladys stood by the primary bassinet – her beautiful baby girl in her arms, her face illuminated by a glow that had nothing to do with the room's lighting. For the first time in years, the tension in her shoulders had vanished. Beside her, the wet nurse, a soft-spoken woman named Elena, was expertly shifting the five-pound boy into a comfortable position for his first feeding.

Her eyes kept drifting between the baby in her arms and the one calmly feeding. Gladys smiled at Elena's gentleness and felt she would keep both her and Nina on as nannies. She wanted the best for her babies and she wanted them to know love everyday of their lives.

The door creaked open, and Angelica stepped in, her silk wrap fluttering behind her. She looked smaller in the dim light, her eyes red-rimmed but sparkling as they landed on the bassinets. She moved toward Gladys with a hesitant, hopeful smile.

"Oh, Gladys," Angelica whispered, her voice catching. "They are absolutely breathtaking. Look at those tiny fingers."

"They're perfect, Angelica," Gladys replied, her voice thick with a fierce, protective pride. "They're finally here."

Angelica leaned over the boy, her hand hovering just inches from his cheek as if she were afraid he might vanish if she touched him. "And have you chosen? Does the world have names for these two treasures yet?"

Gladys looked to the older woman, a warm smile on her face. "Christopher Patrick Jr.," Gladys said softly, gesturing to the boy. "And his sister is Danielle. Danny for short, if she's as stubborn as her mother." She looked down at the girl in her arms and bounced her a bit. She smiled brightly as Danielle looked up to her with alert clear green eyes.

Angelica's smile faltered for a fraction of a second at the mention of "mother," her eyes flickering toward the wet nurse currently nursing the boy. The sight was a stark reminder that Jessica wasn't the one providing this first, vital bond. But she recovered quickly, nodding with a grandmother's grace. "Christopher and Danielle. Strong names. Heritage names. I know the Timms and the Patricks will be proud."

"They will be." Gladys answered, her head lifting in pride. "But the Lances should be as well." She looked down to Danielle's tiny face again. "CJ and Danny have three sets of grandparents to love them." She smiled at Angelica as tears welled in the older woman's eyes.

Outside in the hallway, the atmosphere was far less serene.

Amber and Dan had slipped away from the nursery door, finding a small alcove near a decorative indoor waterfall. The sound of the tumbling water provided a natural veil for their conversation, but Dan still kept his voice at a low, vibrating register.

"Sam and Virginia are already on it," Dan whispered, his hand gripping Amber's shoulder gently. "But Amber, the breach is deep. Someone didn't just hack a camera; they've integrated themselves into the Blue Serene's hardware. It's professional. It's targeted."

Amber's brow furrowed, her scientific mind already analyzing and categorizing the risks. "And you're sure about leaving it? If they're watching the spa, they're watching our guests. They're watching us, Dan."

"If we pull the plug now, we lose the trail," Dan insisted. "I've told Sam to rotate security staff through the lounge. We're going to act natural while our security team traces the this back to the source. I'm not letting anyone destroy what you've built, Amber. Not after everything we've sacrificed."

Amber leaned into him, her hand resting on her bump. "I trust you. Just… don't let this reach my parents. Not today. Let them have this one day of peace with the babies."

They didn't notice the shadow in the doorway of Jessica's suite just twenty feet away.

Albert Cummings stood perfectly still, his workout set blending into the shadows of the darkened room behind him. He hadn't intended to eavesdrop—he had merely stepped out to ask a nurse for more ice—but the mention of "Blue Serene" and "targeted breach" had triggered an old, dormant instinct.

He didn't move until Dan and Amber walked back toward the lounge. He let out a breath and finished his original task. Then, he stepped back into the room and closed the door with a silent, practiced click.

Jessica was propped up on the pillows, her face pale and damp with sweat, but her eyes were sharp as ever as they tracked Albert's movement. She saw the shift in his posture immediately. She narrowed her eyes, as warning bells began to go off in her mind.

"What is it?" she rasped, her voice still weak from the exertion of the birth.

Albert moved to her bedside, place ice in her glass, even as he sat on the edge of the mattress. He took her hand, her thumb began to slowly trace the knuckles where she had bruised him during labor. He leaned in close, his lips nearly brushing her ear.

"Your family has an intruder, Jess," he whispered, his voice cold and clinical. "A high-bandwidth visual feed into the Blue Serene hub. Dan and Samuel are trying to play a 'Honey Pot' game to trace it, but they're moving too slow. They're looking for a hacker. I think they're dealing with a ghost."

Jessica's eyes narrowed, the "Snake Scales" returning to her expression even in her exhaustion. "How bad?"

"Bad enough that they're worried about the brand dying before it truly has time to grow," Albert replied. He looked her directly in the eye, his gaze unwavering. "I can plug it. I can find the origin point and burn it before their security team even finishes their first scan. But if I do, the Lances will know I'm not just a 'pretty good guy' with a bank account. They'll know exactly what I'm capable of."

He paused, letting the weight of the choice settle between them.

"What do you want me to do, Jessica? Do we help your siblings and risk out exposure or do we stay quiet and watch and hope for the best?"

Jessica looked toward the door, then back at the man who had stayed by her side through every contraction. A slow, predatory smile touched her lips.

"Let's stay out of it," she whispered with a shrug. "We have to be selfish sometimes, and I am finally learning that my siblings are rather competent." Her eyes narrowed and her voice lowered an octave. "But no one hurts my family. We'll watch and intervene if need be."
