Chapter 321: What Else Is Related to the Awakening of the Mangekyo?
"Have the offspring parasites almost fully matured?" Kenichi took off his glasses and asked.
Shiori, standing respectfully at his side, nodded at once.
"Yes, Lord Amamiya. I can already sense those companions."
Kenichi nodded. Since Shiori could sense them, it meant those parasites had basically matured enough to take control of the ninja. That meant there would be far fewer variables once the experiments began.
"Then have them come to the lab, five at a time." Kenichi wiped his hands clean. He had been waiting for this day for a long time, and now it had finally arrived.
To complete his plan, a great deal of preparation was still necessary. First, these ninja from the Land of Snow needed to receive the Uchiha clan's genes and then successfully awaken the Sharingan. After that, they would need a period of recovery before attempting to awaken the Three Tomoe.
And after reaching the Three Tomoe stage, they would need another recovery period before trying to awaken the Mangekyo. If the body underwent intense emotional stimulation too many times in a short period, it could easily produce other problems. If these test subjects started dying in batches, that would be a major headache.
So, to be safe, Kenichi had no intention of pushing them straight to the Mangekyo stage in one go.
"Understood, Lord Amamiya." Shiori turned to carry out the order, but Kenichi stopped her with a word.
He glanced at her.
His secretary and housekeeper had always done her work well, and there was no issue with her loyalty. Kenichi also understood that reality was not a game. Very few people ever reached absolute, unquestioning, one hundred percent loyalty.
He could tolerate subordinates having their own thoughts, as long as they remained broadly loyal to him.
"You first. I'll awaken your Mangekyo." Kenichi wiped his hands again. Though Shiori was sensible and knew her place, her biggest weakness was still her lack of combat strength. If intruders appeared, it would be difficult for her to deal with them.
So Kenichi decided to awaken Shiori's Mangekyo first. There was some risk, naturally, but experiments with zero risk simply did not exist.
People in science and medicine had one common habit: they never spoke in absolutes. A doctor would never tell a patient, "Your surgery will definitely succeed."
Because even if the data overwhelmingly supported a method, failure could still occur. The reasons could be related to the patient's physique, the weather, the environment, the temperature, even blind luck.
So Kenichi knew this better than anyone. Even if his method one day allowed the whole world to awaken the Mangekyo, that still would not mean the method was absolutely flawless. Failure would always remain possible. He himself could fail, too.
"Understood, Lord Amamiya." Shiori agreed without hesitation. She did not object, nor did she ask what would happen if something went wrong. She simply made the choice that, to her, was correct.
Kenichi was not surprised. In his eyes, Shiori's greatest virtue was not just obedience, but her ability to read the situation and make the proper decision.
So Kenichi led her into the laboratory, had her sit down in the chair, and prepared to begin the Mangekyo awakening experiment.
"Come here. I'll inject the anesthetic first." Kenichi picked up the syringe. This was one of Orochimaru's strange concoctions. Its anesthetic effect was excellent. The most absurd part, in Kenichi's opinion, was that Orochimaru claimed there was no real need to account for the subject's physical condition, that one could just inject it directly.
Kenichi did not agree with that at all.
He still followed habits from his previous life. He weighed the subject, checked their physical condition, and adjusted the dosage accordingly. The process was tedious, but in practice it produced noticeably better results. When handled that way, the anesthetic's effective duration could be extended by roughly twenty to thirty percent.
Orochimaru, however, believed that most ordinary test subjects were not worth that level of care, so he rarely bothered.
"Understood, Lord Amamiya." Shiori walked over and quietly cooperated with all of Kenichi's examinations. Kenichi glanced at her once more.
A friend of his from his previous life had once been an anesthesiologist. That friend had once joked that death was not very frightening to anesthesiologists, because they had already "killed" countless patients before.
For most patients, their entire memory of surgery was limited to the anesthesiologist saying, "One, two, three," and then, in the next moment, they were waking up after the operation. Everything in between was simply gone.
If a person could be repeatedly anesthetized like that, was that not, in some sense, another form of death?
"You really don't seem afraid of anything," Kenichi said as he prepared the anesthetic dose specifically for Shiori.
"I am not afraid of death. If I am not afraid of death, then there is not much else to fear." Shiori smiled faintly.
Kenichi smiled as well.
For people in the Ninja World, death was indeed not as terrifying as it might be elsewhere. After all, the Pure Land actually existed here. It was a place proven to exist, where the dead could rest, perhaps even live peacefully and reunite with their loved ones. Thinking of it that way, death really did become less frightening.
"This anesthetic will only numb certain physical sensations. It won't put you to sleep. Remember, when the time comes, think of an idea, a wish, a powerful enough desire. Understood?" Kenichi looked at Shiori seriously.
She nodded in silence.
Kenichi did not waste words. He injected the anesthetic directly and then began the experiment.
He followed the same procedure as before. The skull was opened, and he began stimulating the amygdala and the hippocampus. This time, because of the anesthetic, Shiori remained much calmer and did not display the same intense pain response as earlier subjects. That was a relief.
He did not care much about the subjects' comfort, but if every experiment ended with them losing control of their bowels, the lab would need a full cleaning every single time. Worse, the contamination could easily lead to bacterial growth around exposed brain tissue and induce meningitis. That would be a real problem.
Still, as the emotional stimulation intensified, Shiori's body inevitably began reacting violently. Even with the anesthetic, some responses simply could not be suppressed.
Kenichi sighed. Next time, he really would need to make subjects fast and avoid water beforehand. If their systems were emptied in advance, the chance of contaminating the lab would be much lower.
[After repeating the earlier procedure, Uchiha Shiori's physical reaction became extremely intense. However, I did not use the parasites to guide her thoughts this time. This is a screening.]
[I need to test Uchiha Shiori's own thought process. If she passes this test as well, then she will have earned part of my trust.]
[Uchiha Shiori's experiment is more complex. She must first awaken the Three Tomoe Sharingan before proceeding into the Mangekyo stage. I want to verify whether it is possible for the Two Tomoe to evolve continuously into the Mangekyo within a short time.]
Kenichi licked his lips and looked at Shiori with anticipation.
In the previous experiment, her Sharingan had only reached the Two Tomoe stage. Now it had advanced to Three Tomoe, but the experiment was still not over.
Three Tomoe was not the end of the Sharingan. At least, not for someone like Obito.
Kenichi wanted to see whether Shiori, who possessed the same gene line as Obito, would awaken an ability related to Kamui.
As the chakra output increased, the intense emotional stimulation made Shiori let out a pained groan. Kenichi quietly recorded the experimental process.
Under the violent tremors, that strange energy once again surged out from the Sharingan, then flowed into Shiori's eyes. Kenichi ended the chakra output at exactly the right moment, bringing this brief but brutal ordeal to a halt.
"Hm. The floor's still clean. Did she actually control herself?" Kenichi raised an eyebrow.
He had expected another mess, but surprisingly, the ground was mostly clean. There were some stains, but compared to Yayoi Yumi's earlier condition, this was far better.
Kenichi cleaned the area with ninjutsu, then quickly completed the follow up surgery to prevent any contamination of Shiori's brain. After that, all that remained was to wait.
He glanced at the clock. Three minutes passed, yet Shiori still showed no sign of waking. That had already exceeded Yayoi Yumi's previous recovery time.
[It is possible for the Two Tomoe to advance directly into the Mangekyo, but the resulting mental strain is clearly much greater. Whether it damages the soul remains an unknown.]
Kenichi waited silently.
This time, he waited a full ten minutes before light finally returned to Shiori's eyes.
"How do you feel?" Kenichi asked, glancing at the monitor. Her vital signs had stabilized, and there were no major fluctuations.
"My eyes hurt a little, and I feel somewhat tired." Shiori touched her eyes and looked around curiously.
Kenichi raised an eyebrow. It was rare to see such obvious emotion on Shiori's face. Usually, she was so expressionless that she seemed carved from stone.
"What ability did you awaken?" Kenichi asked. This was what he cared about most right now. What kind of power had Shiori's Mangekyo produced?
"I think... like this." Shiori raised a hand.
Her hand instantly became slightly distorted and blurred. In the next moment, a pack of tea appeared in her palm, marked with a very familiar label.
"I took this from the base," Shiori explained.
Kenichi narrowed his eyes. The base? Then that meant his experimental base in the Land of Rice Fields.
A teleportation ability? Or some form of transfer?
"My left eye can retrieve things I've touched before. My right eye can send something I'm holding to a place I remember." Shiori explained calmly.
Kenichi fell into thought. So it was a spatial type ability.
Still, compared to Obito's Kamui, it was clearly weaker. Obito could enter another dimension, evade attacks, and drag enemies in with him. That was a much more terrifying level of spatial control.
"I remember there's a white mouse at my experimental base. Can you bring it here?" Kenichi wanted to see what happened if the ability was used on a living thing.
"I'll try."
Shiori took a breath and activated her ability again. Her hand distorted, and a white mouse was pulled into view.
But the moment it appeared, it was already dead.
Kenichi narrowed his eyes thoughtfully.
"It was alive when I grabbed it," Shiori said.
Kenichi nodded. If this ability could pull part of a living person's body through space, it would have been absurdly powerful.
"All right. Don't use it anymore for now. Overusing the Mangekyo will make you go blind." Kenichi stopped her from continuing. He needed her to rest. More importantly, he needed to sort through all the information he had just gained.
Based on these two experiments alone, Kenichi already felt his current method was fundamentally sound. If not for his usual caution, he might have moved straight to awakening his own Mangekyo already.
"But Shiori awakened a spatial type Mangekyo. Could that be tied to Obito's genes?" Kenichi was particularly concerned by that question.
If that really was the case, then the abilities awakened by the Mangekyo might be controllable, at least to some extent. Of course, proving that would require many more experiments.
"If that's true, then if I could obtain the Sage of Six Paths' genes, maybe I could awaken something even stronger?" Kenichi rubbed his chin.
Still, all of that depended on whether Mangekyo abilities were truly related to genetics.
And honestly, Kenichi himself felt that possibility was probably not too high. The original setting had made it clear that Mangekyo abilities were also tied to the user's emotional state and personal circumstances. Genes might influence the outcome, but probably only as a matter of probability, not certainty.
"So the next step is large scale testing. It's a pity my teacher isn't here. With his help, things would move much faster." Kenichi stretched.
For now, he could only rely on himself and his Shadow Clones. He only hoped he could finish this project as soon as possible.
