Chapter 30 - The March

They left at dawn.

Haven's gates closed behind them. No ceremony. No goodbyes.

Five fugitives walking into hell.

"Three days to the Scarred Zones." Kane's final words echoed. "Don't stop. Don't engage unless necessary. Survive."

Jayden led. His eye constantly scanning.

[Hostile entities: 47 within 5 miles]

Marcus walked second. Armor manifested. A wall.

Elena third. Ice forming with each breath.

Zain and Cinna brought up rear. Stone and green light ready.

The wasteland stretched endlessly grey.

Hour one: Nothing.

Hour two: Hollows spotted. They avoided them.

Hour three: Corrupted wolves. Six of them.

"Through or around?" Marcus asked.

Jayden's eye calculated. Around added thirty minutes.

"Through. Fast."

They hit like lightning.

Jayden's blade opened throats. Elena froze three solid. Zain crushed skulls. Cinna healed the scratches.

Forty seconds. Six corpses.

They kept moving.

"Corruption rising," Cinna warned. "We're at 18% average."

"Expected." Jayden didn't slow.

Noon hit. The sun was wrong here. Grey disk behind grey clouds.

They found the flower.

Purple. Glowing faintly. Growing from cracked earth.

Azalea Eternis.

Jayden knelt. Touched the petals carefully.

"Still here," he said.

"Lucian's trail." Elena scanned ahead. "He's been planting them."

"Why?" Zain asked.

"To remember the way back." Jayden stood. "Or to give others hope."

They pressed on.

Evening. First camp.

No fire. Too visible.

They ate rations. Drank purified water. Checked equipment.

"Tomorrow's worse," Marcus said. "Kane's map shows essence storms."

"We push through." Jayden studied the route. "Stop for nothing."

"What if we hit something we can't beat?" Cinna's voice was quiet.

"We run."

"And if we can't run?"

Jayden's eye met hers. "We win anyway."

Watch rotations. Two hours each.

Jayden took first. His eye tracked movement in darkness.

[Entities detected: 23 nearby. All Hollow or Wanderer rank.]

Manageable.

Elena relieved him. "Sleep. Long day tomorrow."

He tried. Couldn't.

His mind ran scenarios. Ash. The portal. Lucian.

[Victory probability: 41%]

Not good enough.

But they had no choice.

Sleep came eventually.

Day two began with screaming.

Not theirs.

Jayden bolted upright. The team was already moving.

A camp. Three hundred yards east. People.

Being slaughtered.

"Do we " Marcus started.

"No." Jayden's voice was iron. "We keep moving."

"But "

"They're already dead."

He was right. The screams stopped.

They packed in silence.

Walked past the camp. Didn't look.

Twelve bodies. Hollows feeding.

Cinna's hands shook.

"We can't save everyone," Jayden said.

"I know."

"Not yet."

"I know."

But her eyes said otherwise.

The essence storm hit at noon.

Wall of corrupted energy. Mile wide. Moving fast.

"Shelter!" Jayden spotted ruins. "NOW!"

They ran.

The storm caught them anyway.

Corruption slammed into them. Jayden's essence fought it. Burning. Resisting.

[CORRUPTION: 18% → 23%]

Five percent in seconds.

Cinna's barriers held. Barely.

The storm passed. Ten minutes. Felt like hours.

They emerged. Gasping.

"Everyone okay?" Jayden checked stats.

[CORRUPTION: 23% JAYDEN, 21% TEAM AVERAGE]

Approaching Wanderer levels.

"We're fine," Elena lied.

They weren't. But they moved anyway.

Second camp. Worse location. No ruins. Just open ground.

They slept in shifts. Weapons ready.

Third watch. Jayden's turn.

Something moved in the dark.

Not Hollows.

[ANALYZING...]

[DEMON LOW RANK]

[SPEED: 45.7 UNITS. POWER: 52.3 UNITS]

His first demon.

Humanoid. Wrong proportions. Red skin. Claws.

It smelled them.

Turned.

Jayden's blade was already moving.

Shadow Step. Strike. Black lightning through the heart.

The demon died. Screaming.

The team woke.

"Demon," Jayden said. "They're already coming through."

"How many?" Marcus manifested armor.

Jayden's eye scanned. "Three more within two miles."

"We need to move."

"At night?"

"We're out of time."

They packed. Moved in darkness.

Slower. Careful. But moving.

Dawn of day three.

The Scarred Zones loomed ahead.

Everything was wrong.

The ground was black glass. The sky was red. Essence thick enough to see.

[CORRUPTION LEVEL: 87% ATMOSPHERIC]

[WARNING: EXTENDED EXPOSURE LETHAL]

"We have maybe six hours," Jayden said. "Before we start turning."

"Then we'd better move fast." Elena's blade was ice and determination.

They entered.

The corruption was physical. Pressing. Suffocating.

Every breath hurt.

Every step drained essence.

[CORRUPTION: 23% → 25% → 27%]

Climbing.

"There!" Zain pointed.

In the distance. A fortress. Black stone. Essence radiating.

And around it. Dozens of demons.

"Ash's portal." Jayden's eye zoomed in. "The fortress protects it."

"Where's Lucian?" Marcus asked.

Jayden scanned.

Found him.

Fighting. Alone. Against five demons at once.

Moving like lightning. Killing. Dying. Surviving.

[LUCIAN VALEHEART DETECTED]

[RANK: APEX]

[SPEED: 103.7 UNITS. POWER: 97.4 UNITS]

[STATUS: CRITICAL 34% ESSENCE REMAINING]

"He's losing." Jayden started running. "MOVE!"

The team sprinted.

Demons spotted them. Turned. Charged.

Eight demons. Low rank but deadly.

"Formation!" Jayden called.

They hit like a hammer.

Marcus tanked three. Elena froze two. Zain crushed one.

Jayden Shadow Stepped through. Blade flashing. Black lightning burning.

Four demons down in seconds.

The others retreated. Regrouping.

Lucian killed the fifth demon he was fighting.

Turned.

Saw them.

White hair. Scarred face. Eyes like winter.

"You." His voice was rough. "The kid from Nexus."

"We're here to help."

"You're here to die." Lucian looked at the fortress. "That portal opens in one hour. Ash is inside. If we don't stop him "

"We stop him." Jayden's eye blazed. "Together."

Lucian stared. Assessing.

Then smiled. Faint. Broken.

"Alright. Let's kill a god."

The demons charged.

And the real battle began.
