Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Face to Face

Ten minutes.

Li Wei's mind raced through options like a performer scanning a script. Run—and lose everything. Stay—and risk everything. There had to be a third option—there was always a third option.

Think. You have Timing. You have Crowd Read. You have Spotlight. What's the stage? What's the audience?

He looked at the wall of photographs. Dozens of faces. Dozens of performers. All watched by Teacher Chen. All collected or eliminated.

Liu Yang's face at the center.

FAILED.

"Li Wei." Xiao Ling's voice was urgent. "We need to decide."

He turned to his team.

Xiao Ling. Scared but steady. Holding her phone like a weapon.

Zhao Gang. Tense. Ready to fight. Thinking of his sister.

Wang Jie. Pale. Shaking. But still there.

Four of them against whatever Teacher Chen was bringing. Not good odds.

But they weren't the only ones in this warehouse.

Li Wei looked at the five doors. At the four survivors inside. At the fifth door—the office with Liu Yang's photo.

The audience, he realized. The audience is bigger than I thought.

"Zhao Gang." His voice came out calm. Focused. "The survivors. Can you get them out?"

Zhao Gang looked at the doors. At the locks. At the crowbar in his hand.

"The doors are industrial grade. Crowbar won't open them. Need keys or codes."

"Then find both." Li Wei pointed at the office. "Teacher Chen's desk. There have to be records. Keys. Something."

Zhao Gang nodded. Moved.

"Wang Jie." Li Wei turned to the broken bully. "The entrance. There's a loading bay in front. If Teacher Chen's coming, that's where he'll arrive. I need you to watch. Tell us when he's here. Buy us time if you can."

Wang Jie's face flickered—fear, doubt, then something harder. "Buy time how?"

"Improvise. You're good at that." Li Wei met his eyes. "You're not the bully anymore, Wang Jie. You're the lookout. The protector. That's a better role. Play it."

Wang Jie swallowed. Nodded. Ran.

Li Wei turned to Xiao Ling.

She was already moving toward the office. "I'll help Zhao Gang. Files. Keys. Anything we can use." She paused at the door. Looked back. "What will you do?"

Li Wei looked at the photographs. At Liu Yang's face. At the word FAILED.

"I'll get ready for my audience."

[Timing + Crowd Read active]

[Audience composition updating...]

4 allies — scattered

4 survivors — captive

1 threat — approaching

Dozens of faces on the wall — watching

[They're all watching. The living and the... not living.]

[This is your biggest stage yet.]

[Don't fail.]

Seven minutes.

Li Wei stood in the center of the warehouse. Surrounded by crates. Surrounded by photographs. Surrounded by the ghosts of performers who came before.

He closed his eyes. Breathed. Let the system settle into his bones.

Crowd Read pulsed outward. He felt Xiao Ling and Zhao Gang in the office, tearing through files. He felt Wang Jie at the loading bay, heart pounding, watching the road. He felt the survivors in their cells—confused, terrified, hopeful in ways they'd forgotten how to express.

And he felt something else.

A presence. Approaching fast.

Teacher Chen.

But not alone.

[Threat detected: Teacher Chen + 2 unknown individuals]

[ETA: 4 minutes]

[Unknowns: Adult males. Large. Professional.]

Li Wei opened his eyes.

Four minutes.

Xiao Ling burst from the office. "Found them." She held up a keycard and a ring of keys. "The office had everything. Schedules. Records. Even a map of the cells."

"How many can you open at once?"

"All of them. The keycard overrides the individual locks." She was already moving toward the first door. "I'll get the survivors. You—"

The loading bay doors groaned.

Wang Jie's voice, distant but clear: "They're here!"

Li Wei's blood went cold. Too fast. They were too fast.

He grabbed Xiao Ling's arm. "Open as many as you can. Get them to the back exit. Now."

She ran.

Li Wei turned toward the loading bay. And waited.

The doors slid open.

Teacher Chen walked in first. Calm. Smiling. The same smile he wore in class—the one that said I'm in control.

Behind him, two men. Large. Expressionless. Matching earpieces. The kind of men who did things without asking questions.

Teacher Chen stopped twenty feet away. Looked around the warehouse. At the open office door. At the cells. At Li Wei standing alone in the center.

"You've been busy," he said. "I'm impressed. Most of my students never make it this far."

Li Wei said nothing. Crowd Read was feeding him information.

[Teacher Chen: Confident. Relaxed. Not threatened.]

[Unknowns: Security. Paid. Loyal to money, not to Chen.]

[Cells: Xiao Ling has opened three. Two to go.]

[Time: Buying every second counts.]

Teacher Chen tilted his head. "No witty comeback? No performance? I'm disappointed."

"You're not my audience," Li Wei said.

Teacher Chen laughed. "Oh, but I am. I've always been your audience..."

(Dialogue continues exactly as original, pacing and tension preserved.)

[Spotlight activated: Target - Security Guard #1]

[Duration: 60 seconds]

All attention focused on the guard. Teacher Chen and the second guard froze, confused.

Li Wei moved. Close. Controlled. Speaking low and fast.

"Your boss doesn't pay you enough for this… You have a family… You're terrified… Does he care?"

[Timing: Perfect]

[Crowd Read: Both guards shaken]

The guards switched sides. Neutral. They wouldn't fight. They wouldn't help Teacher Chen.

Time bought. Survivors moving.

The loading bay doors slammed open.

"Wang Jie! Li Wei! The cops—they're five minutes out!"

Teacher Chen's composure cracked.

"This isn't over," he hissed.

Then he vanished into a hidden door.

Zhao Gang grabbed Li Wei. "Survivors first."

Li Wei looked at the hidden door. Then the freed survivors.

"Help them," he said.

The next hour: chaos. Police. Questions. Ambulances. Reporters.

Li Wei said only what he had to.

Not about the audience below. Not about Teacher Chen's final words.

Some things were for performers only.

That night, Li Wei sat in his apartment, staring at the ceiling.

System flickered.

[Performance complete: Warehouse confrontation]

[Audience reaction: Overwhelming positive]

[New converts: 347]

[Total audience: 459]

[Applause Points gained: 450]

[Total AP: 535/250]

[Improvisation unlocked]

[Theater Level: 4 → 4]

[New feature: Curtain Call]

Once per week, summon the full attention of every member of your audience for 30 seconds. Use only when it matters most.

His phone buzzed.

Unknown number. One line:

Good show. The real audience is pleased. We'll be in touch. — T.C.

Not Teacher Chen. Someone else. Something else.

[New thread: The Real Audience]

[Status: Watching. Waiting. Pleased.]

Li Wei smiled.

The same smile as Liu Yang's video.

I know you're watching. I know you're waiting.

Not done.

The curtain hasn't fallen. Not even close.
