Arc 1: Chapter 47

Eric and Voyage were now on the streets of Paris. Eric was still in his Mike Jackson persona, pushing the stroller that held Voyage.

He had been given far more things than he could carry. To the surprise of all the nurses and even Dr. House, he had shown his strength and easily taken everything. Now that they had left the hospital, he had already teleported all the items to the abandoned house where he kept his belongings.

Voyage lay on his back in the stroller, his huge watery eyes wide open as he stared at the sky. A pacifier was in his mouth, which he sucked on cutely. He was dressed in adorable yellowish-white clothes that made him look incredibly innocent. In his small hand was a toy that jingled whenever he moved it.

Voyage kept up his flawless acting the entire time. However, in their minds, the two were having a conversation through Meditation Aura.

"Your acting is very good," Voyage praised.

"I can say the same for you. Oh la la, cutie pie baby," Eric returned with a teasing tone.

"Hey, don't say that embarrassing shit!" Voyage shook his toy in anger, causing loud jingle sounds to ring out.

"Anyways. Now that I'm your papa, who should be our target? Let me clarify—I will only help you kill one person and then leave. So you should choose an ideal target."

Voyage sucked on his pacifier with increased force, his eyes furrowing. To outsiders, he simply looked adorable and squishy.

"There is no rush, no rush. Only devils are impatient. We can totally relax and spend our time exploring first."

Eric snorted unhappily.

"Hmph! Don't think I'm unaware of your intentions. I know you just want to probe me."

Voyage started playing with his toy gently, producing soft jingling sounds.

"Hehe, you got my intentions. As expected of the third one. You indeed possess high-level intelligence and natural deduction capabilities."

"It is nothing much. Since we both have probing intentions, let me propose something."

Eric's face remained expressionless on the outside, but his tone inside was mysterious with a hint of excitement.

"Oh? What is it? I'm interested to hear that."

"Let's play a game. We will each ask the other one question, which must be answered. The answer has to be concise and true—no need to tell every detail. Then the one who answered gets to ask the next question, and it continues like that."

Voyage nodded internally as his body shook with excitement on the outside. He looked as if he wanted to reach up and touch the sky with his tiny arms while lying in the stroller.

"So how do we decide who goes first?" Voyage asked.

"That is obvious. We will flip a coin, and whoever wins goes first."

Voyage sat up in his stroller and looked back at Eric with furrowed brows. He clearly wanted to give this guy a few tight slaps.

"Shameless! How can you expect an oh-la-la cutie patootie baby like me to compete with a whole ass grown man!"

Eric laughed inwardly but only showed a small smile outwardly.

He took out a coin and asked Voyage to pick a side.

"Heads!" Voyage chose.

"Then I shall pick tails."

Eric flipped the coin. It landed on tails.

"Damn it! You must have cheated!"

Voyage started rolling around in the stroller, making a fuss. Some grandmas and young women nearby looked at Eric, who was smiling and trying to calm the "baby" down. A few seemed ready to come help, but Voyage quickly calmed himself.

"Prove that I cheated."

"Hmph, forget it. Ask away." Voyage folded his arms and sniffed unhappily, sucking harder on his pacifier.

Eric glanced toward the Eiffel Tower on his right and asked his first question.

"My first question is: Why did you choose to rebirth in Paris? From my understanding, you could have been reborn anywhere and then come here with a young body. Why take all the trouble to rebirth here specifically?"

"Why? It is simple. First, by rebirthing here, I can use my aura much more effectively and easily. My attacks would even have an amplifying effect on Earth due to this. This is another aspect of my aura. Second, when I eat a teenager here to grow, my growth would be much faster and the effect far greater. Third, it was a way for me to approach you, set up an alliance, and interact with you. It paid off, didn't it?"

Voyage shrugged his small shoulders and turned his body in the stroller, pretending to sleep.

Eric nodded. It was indeed a wise move. Just this one action had given Voyage so many advantages and opportunities. However, whether this was his own decision or one given by a high-ranking member of Divine Karma, Eric had no idea. He didn't care either.

Now it was Voyage's turn to ask a question.

They continued walking along the footpath without stopping anywhere to eat. Aura users could survive much longer without food than normal humans. The higher the rank, the greater their vitality, the less they depended on food and water, and the longer their lifespan became.

Both Eric and Voyage were at Lysi Nova rank—one at 65% control, the other at 100%. They could easily go more than two weeks without food or water.

Voyage thought for a bit before asking his first question.

"What is your current rate of control of your aura?"

Eric felt a flicker of anxiety. Telling someone your exact control rate could reveal which step you were stuck on and allow them to indirectly interfere with your progress. Still, if he wanted information, he had to give some in return.

"I recently made a breakthrough. My rate of control is now at 65%."

"Oh! You are close to reaching the third step. Good. It must be a very hard step for you to be stuck on it. I might ask about it later. Haha."

Voyage was excitedly chatting through Meditation Aura, but on the outside, he looked like a little angel sleeping soundly, occasionally sucking on his pacifier.

"Ask away your second question now," Voyage said in a relaxed tone.

"I want to ask you about the recent cases of devils suddenly appearing in Paris."

"Oh, the devil cases you heard from that doctor?"

Eric nodded inwardly.

"Let me explain clearly then. After you killed the assassin girl sent by the organization, they realized you were too troublesome. To make things easier for the Lysi Nova sent here to compete, the Hypernova assigned to this city requested a Hypernova-rank relic from the organization. The request was approved. A relic of the Evil pathway was sent over. The Hypernova handed it to the Lysi Nova, taking the negative effects himself."

"This relic can increase one's affinity with devils. On top of that, it can store evil deeds. When fully charged, it can unleash a power that sacrifices all living beings around the user to grant a massive boost in strength."

Eric listened attentively. He didn't question how Voyage knew all this. Divine Karma had ample methods from the Overseeing pathway. With enough clues, they could divine many things, and the results were naturally passed to Voyage.

"Is this a coincidence?" Eric thought. He himself possessed a Goodness-pathway relic that increased his affinity with angel spirits and stored good deeds that turned into blessings in times of danger. The only difference was that his was a rank 0 relic while the other was Hypernova-rank.

Eric showed a convincing look of worry, with furrowed brows and a few beads of sweat on his forehead.

Voyage inwardly laughed at the reaction.

After Eric "calmed down," Voyage asked his second question.

"Imagine we all get into a fight with no escape route left. In that situation, if you had to choose between Lumenia or Divine Karma, which one would you pick?"

Voyage's black eyes flashed with a sharp light.

Eric could acutely sense how astute Voyage was. No wonder he had been sent by Divine Karma. His earlier assessment had been correct—Voyage surpassed his expectations.

After pondering for a few minutes, Eric answered calmly:

"It would depend on which side is weaker, which is stronger, what benefits they offer, and which side would give me the best chance to survive."

Voyage let out a low chuckle. Some passersby glanced at the stroller, surprised that the supposedly sleeping baby had made a sound.

Eric then asked his third question.

"My third question: What is your plan after you finish eating?"

"My plan after eating? Haha. That is simple. I will just disappear, recuperate, increase my strength in the meantime, and strike when an opportunity comes."

Voyage had no fear in revealing this. Any smart person could guess it anyway.

Voyage asked his third question with a small smile. He had woken up, his eyes opened into slits, making him look deep in thought. A bit of saliva even slid down the corner of his mouth.

"What is the thing that is making you unable to reach the third step?"

Eric took a deep breath and glanced at the sky. He answered slowly in a solemn tone:

"I have yet to find my ambition."

Voyage's eyes glinted with a sharp light. He widened them slightly and looked at Eric. A sense of nostalgia washed over him as he remembered his own past, when he too had struggled to find his goal. Seeing someone else face the same problem gave him a rare feeling of empathy.

After that, the two simply nodded at each other and asked no more questions.

They continued chatting and blabbering about pointless things—sometimes sharing their struggles with controlling their aura, increasing battle strength, earning aura stones, and gaining contribution points.

There was a warm vibe around them. If someone could hear their conversation, they would think these two were great friends.

They had been walking for two hours now.

Their target was a student at New Dawn High School. Voyage had already set his eyes on a young teenager there. He had never managed to kidnap and eat her because he had been too weak and had to lie low while his small gang was too incompetent.

"My original plan was to grow a little by devouring some little kids first, then kill and eat this target to become an adult and escape. But who could have guessed…"

Voyage folded his arms and slowly turned his gaze to Eric with furrowed brows.

Eric didn't respond. Instead, he contacted Mr. Clown through Meditation Aura.

At this moment, the target was just a simple teenager—not even a Nova-level aura user. Eric wanted to end this in the most effective and shortest way possible. Since Mr. Clown was already in the same place as Adrian, killing the target would be child's play..

...

Marie packed up her things and prepared to leave. She had planned to go home with Adrian, so she refused her friends' requests and waited.

She turned around excitedly, beaming with her usual bubbly energy, but when her gaze fell on Adrian's seat, he was nowhere to be seen.

"Huh? Where is Adrian? I swear I saw him in his seat just a few minutes ago."

If only she knew that the Adrian who had been in class the entire time was merely a manifestation created by Mr. Clown's Fooling Aura.

She guessed he might have left without her noticing and went out to look for him.

"He's the loner type. He must be somewhere nearby. I should keep looking."

After searching everywhere without success, Marie finally gave up and decided to head home alone.

Unknowingly, a red dragonfly made of Mr. Clown's red-and-black particles flew toward her and entered her mind. She felt nothing.

She walked out onto the streets and began her usual route home. But under the effect of the Fooling Aura, she turned into a narrow, dark alley instead.

As she walked, she felt a warm liquid drip from her nose.

"Huh?"

She rubbed her nose with her right hand and saw it completely smeared with blood.

"Why am I having a nosebleed?" These were the last words of her life.

Small cracks appeared on her forehead, quickly widening. Soon, her head burst open like a watermelon.

Blood and white brain matter splattered across the alley.

On this day, a young, lively, and innocent high school student died miserably, without even knowing what happened to her.
