Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Training Begins

The warehouse buzzed with nervous energy. Emerald moved among the recruits, watching them fidget with makeshift weapons or mutter quietly to themselves. Some had latent magical ability, some none at all, but all had survived. That alone made them valuable.

"Stand up straight," Emerald said, voice firm but calm. "Fear does not help you fight. It only makes mistakes easier."

A young man with trembling hands tried to hold a wooden staff upright and failed. Emerald stepped beside him, placing her hands over his. A soft pulse of green light passed from her into him. The staff steadied in his grip.

"Feel your own center," she said. "Your power is not mine. It responds to you, not to me. Focus."

He blinked, astonished. "I… I felt it."

"Yes," Emerald said. "That is the first step. You cannot fight what you do not understand."

Kael guided the recruits with her, demonstrating coordinated movements, teaching them how to use terrain, how to work together. Sam and Noah watched, stepping in to correct mistakes, showing them how to stay aware of each other during conflict.

Sara stayed close to Emerald, offering encouragement. "They're scared," she said softly. "We have to be patient."

Emerald nodded. "Yes. Fear is natural. But it must be controlled. Controlled fear becomes instinct. Controlled instinct becomes skill."

Hours passed, and the group began to move as a unit. Emerald's magic no longer flared uncontrollably, but hovered quietly around her, responding to her intentions. She practiced subtle demonstrations, showing recruits that raw power was not always the answer control could be far more effective.

A sudden knock at the warehouse door made everyone jump. Emerald moved forward, hand glowing faintly. She opened the door slowly. A scout from the city's outskirts stood there, hood pulled low, eyes wary.

"They know you're here," he said. "Word spreads fast. The Queen's agents are moving already."

Emerald's jaw tightened. "Then we train faster. We prepare. We make sure that when they come, we are ready."

The scout nodded and left, disappearing into the night.

The recruits looked to Emerald, uncertainty in their eyes.

"Fear can be a guide," she told them, "but it cannot rule your actions. You have a choice. Every time. You choose courage, or you choose hiding. We do not hide."

As the first light of dawn crept through the broken windows, the recruits had learned more than basic defense. They had learned that Emerald's power was not something to fear, but a tool to master and a standard to follow.

Emerald stood in the center, breathing steadily, her mark faintly glowing. She had survived the curse, the trials, and the first confrontation with the Queen's influence. Now she had survivors ready to follow her lead.

And for the first time, she allowed herself a thought that had once seemed impossible: she might actually win.
