Anu;
She opens her eyes again, and this time, there's unbridled fear and sorrow in them.
"The same place they took his mother," she whispers, and my stomach drops.
Took his mother??
"But… But Ethan's mom died in a plane crash. They didn't take her anywhere. She's… she's dead." I say slowly, and to my horror, she shakes her head in negation.
And that— That is when everything shifts.
"No," she says, and I fall silent as everything inside me freezes.
"Elana's not dead." She whispers, and suddenly, the room warps around me.
It's suddenly cages me.
Suddenly it feels smaller… and tighter.
"What–what do you mean… she's not… dead?" I whisper in disbelief.
My voice doesn't sound like mine anymore… and maybe it's because it no longer is.
Now, it's just pure shock and horror that's responding.
"I mean what I said, Anu. Ethan's mother… is alive," She says, and my heart goes numb in my chest.
Each word is careful. Eerily quiet. Like saying it out loud costs her something.
