He opened his mouth and found no answer that would not sound like an excuse. The ledger of his life had many entries he preferred not to read aloud: late meetings, strategic alliances, the small betrayals that had been justified as necessary. He had not been present in the way she needed and when he was, he always supported Fiona showing it very clearly that she was adopted and would never be apart of this family properly.
"You're asking me to move my wedding because your actual daughter wants the spotlight," she said. "You want me to make room for a spectacle. You want me to be the one who sacrifices."
"Isadora—" He tried again, but she cut him off.
"If you cannot handle two daughters wanting to be seen," she said, voice steady and cold, "then perhaps you should have thought about that before you taught one of them to take and the other to wait."
He felt the heat rise in his face. "Don't speak to me like that."
