Chapter 81 - The Weight of Trust

Alistair POV

I don't go to my room. I try to.

I stand in front of the door for a full minute, hand hovering over the handle, knowing I should rest, knowing tomorrow is going to demand everything from us. But my mind won't quiet. Not after that conversation. Not after the look Sarafina gave us before she left.

She was not angry. That would have been easier.

Her door is closed, of course , I wasn't expecting to be wide open. For a second, I consider leaving. Giving her space. But that would just be another way of avoiding the problem. And I've done enough of that already.

So I knock. A soft pause.

"Come in."

I push the door open.

Sarafina sits by the window, knees drawn slightly up, her gaze fixed somewhere outside. The room is dim, lit only by the faint glow of the evening sky.
