Chapter 47 - The Pride-Crushing Battle

I started the fight by running towards him; I jumped backwards when I realised a door was moving towards me, ready to transport me elsewhere.

I looked around and found myself surrounded by open doors—leading to various countries; the doors were flying towards me almost simultaneously, forcing me to dodge them as quickly as possible.

I jumped and a door swept past beneath me—BANG—a bullet whizzed past and shattered the door beside me. "HYAHH!" A vine lashed out and flung all the doors around us away, "He's so kind he even thought of a holiday destination for us, isn't he?"

Arrows shattered the doors trying to close in, and when I raised my head and looked up, I saw a man wearing a beanie and hidden beneath the hood of his jacket; he was standing atop a tower, a bow in his hand.

Alice produced a multitude of cards and flung them into the air—from those cards, a wooden sword materialized and shot towards Gilles; he immediately opened more doors to shield himself. Almost instantly, more doors materialized around me, and Alice's swords, with their wooden blades, descended, aimed at me.

I deflected the wooden swords with my shotgun, and had to fend off several with my hands and feet. "You must have realised they were coming, surely?" I asked Alice.

Alice jumped back and whispered, "I was just testing… And now I know he can't open the big door; it stays exactly the same size."

"Alice! Come here a moment!" Holmes called from behind, and as soon as she heard her name, she spun round and ran.

"As if I'd let that happen!" Gilles shouted, and with a single wave of his hand, dozens of doors appeared, trying to block Alice's path. "Get lost!"

Alice ran breathlessly because she'd already overexerted her powers, but she couldn't collapse here—WHOOSH—a piercing whistling sound echoed, and arrows struck the doors in unison before—BOOM—the arrows created a small explosion that cleared the path for Alice.

Robin, from the top of the tower, smiled proudly whilst Gilles was not pleased to see that; that was when I realised—Gilles should have been able to create a door to bring her down, but he did not do so. And the longer I watched his attacks becoming haphazard, "Is he sacrificing his humility...?" I muttered to myself.

Now I understood why he was so weak now—it was because his pride had been shattered after being beaten to a pulp, and that was making him act recklessly. It seemed Holmes had already realised this and wanted to discuss a plan to ensure he could defeat him tonight.

I turned and locked eyes with Gilles, "You stupid bitches… You're all the same… Only eyeing my wealth without seeing the sincerity of my love!" He fired another shot at me, but I dodged it all easily until I was right in front of him.

I'd already pressed the muzzle of my shotgun against his stomach, but my hand suddenly halted—it was the same sensation I felt when I first entered that mansion: an overwhelming sense of dread.

When I lifted my head, Gilles's face was a mixture of fear and confusion because I had nearly managed to kill him—without wasting a moment, Gilles shoved me backwards against a closed door, sending me flying into one of the open doors.

As I passed through that door, I found myself plummeting through a sky full of stars and when I looked down, I could see the Colosseum. "Oh, I've always been curious about Rome"

WHOOSH

An arrow tied to a string appeared in front of me as It also passed through the same door; I quickly caught the arrow and felt myself being pulled upwards. "If only I could use someone else's Everafter… I would've stolen Gilles' and gone off everywhere every day"

I finally managed to get back to London and saw Robin lifting my body with all his might. I held onto the door frame, jumped, and set my feet on the bridge again.

"You're heavier than I thought..." Robin said, panting, and I'm sure if he'd said that to Alice, she'd have thrown him straight into the river below this bridge.

"Believe it or not, but my body is muscular—that's probably the reason," I replied, and this made Robin look up in surprise, whilst I turned towards Gilles, who was kneeling whilst clutching his stomach. Beside him lay Robin's dart, the one he'd fired whilst we were still at the mansion; it seemed the poison was beginning to eat away at Gilles' body from within.

A card flew past me and stuck near Gilles; he tilted his head in confusion before a root emerged from the card and trapped him with its spines—he tried to wriggle free, but it only caused him more pain.

I could feel a wave of heat and when I look up, I can already see Alice floating through the air with a flaming stone—no, she was creating a meteor herself with her remaining energy.

"Don't let him open the door again!" Holmes shouts, and I glance at his hand, which still has a chance to move—BANG—my shotgun shell flies without warning and strikes his hand.

Gilles screamed as his hand was torn from his arm, blood gushing out to soak the pavement, and now the key was smeared with its owner's blood.

He couldn't open any door now, nor could he move, "JUST THROW IT! I WON'T DIE FROM THAT, AND ONCE I'M FREE I'LL KILL YOU AND DRINK YOUR BLOOD!" he screamed, even though that was impossible and he'd lost his mind—he couldn't beg for mercy because his humility had already been sacrificed.

I stepped back towards Holmes, far behind me, whilst Robin used his grappling hook to swing down, his feet touching the road safely. Alice, flying above, clasped her arms as a flaming stone floated high above her.

"This is your punishment for everything you've done—GO TO HELL, YOU WANKER!" she screamed, hurling the meteor towards Gilles, who could only stand there and take the fiery rock—even in his final moments, he still wore that terrifying smile on his face.

CRASH!

Alice, witnessing this, immediately fell and plummeted; her energy was completely spent now. I caught Alice's now-weak body and looked at the meteor that had landed on the bridge road.
