Julian sat alone in his office at 11 PM and understood that he'd constructed an impossible architecture.
The entire premise of his investigation had been wrong. He'd come into this marriage, had orchestrated this marriage, convinced that Iris Hartwell might have ordered her husband's death. The probability had been real. The financial timing was suspicious. Her emotional distance in private conversations had been notable.
But weeks of investigation had yielded nothing but absence of evidence. And absence of evidence, when investigation had been thorough, was evidence itself.
Iris hadn't orchestrated Daniel's death. He was almost certain of it now.
The problem was proving his own innocence without destroying her in the process.
