Chapter 120 - War of Faith: Part 50

Dust drifted slowly across the shattered valley.

At its center, the Herald stood within the crater Hiroto had forced it into.

Its light flickered.

Unstable but not broken.

Hiroto watched silently from above.

The shadow around him remained calm, flowing across the battlefield like a controlled tide.

For a moment Nothing moved.

Then the Herald spoke.

"Adaptation protocol… engaged."

Akari's eyes narrowed.

"…That doesn't sound good."

The Watcher's voice dropped.

"…This is what they do."

"…They evolve mid-battle."

The Herald slowly lifted its head.

The damaged wing behind it dissolved into fragments of light Then reformed.

Not the same.

Sharper.

More defined.

Lines of energy spread across its body like glowing veins.

The air tightened instantly.

Hiroto felt it.

"…So you're not done."

The Herald stepped forward.

This time The ground didn't respond to Hiroto.

For the first time since the shift His control met resistance.

The Herald raised its hand.

The shadow beneath it flickered.

Then split apart.

Akari's eyes widened.

"…It's interfering with his control!"

The Herald's voice echoed:

"Environmental synchronization… countered."

In an instant It vanished.

Hiroto turned too late.

A strike landed across his side, sending him crashing through the stone behind him.

The impact echoed across the valley.

Yui gasped.

"…It's faster!"

The Herald appeared above him instantly.

A barrage of precise strikes followed Each one targeting joints.

Weak points.

Not brute force.

Analysis.

Hiroto blocked some but not all.

Blood sprayed across the ground.

The Enforcer smirked slightly.

"…There it is."

"…Now it's fighting properly."

Hiroto skidded across the battlefield before stopping himself.

He stood again, breathing heavier now.

"…So you adapt to what I do…"

The Herald hovered slightly above the ground.

Its wings now sharper, more angular.

More dangerous.

"Correction requires efficiency."

"You will be neutralized."

Hiroto exhaled slowly.

The shadow around him shifted again.

Not expanding.

Not overwhelming.

Condensing.

"…Then I'll just change faster."

The ground beneath him responded again but differently.

Instead of massive structures Thin, precise lines of shadow spread outward.

The battlefield turned into a grid of controlled space.

The Herald paused.

"New pattern detected."

Hiroto disappeared.

This time, He moved through the shadow itself.

Reappearing behind the Herald instantly.

His strike landed cleanly.

The Herald was driven forward but recovered mid-motion.

It twisted and countered immediately.

Their attacks collided again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More controlled.

No wasted movement.

No excess power.

Just pure combat.

Akari watched closely.

"…They're adapting to each other."

The Watcher nodded.

"…This isn't a fight anymore."

"…It's evolution."

The battlefield cracked again under their clashes.

The sentinel remained still Watching.

Waiting.

Hiroto and the Herald separated briefly.

Both standing.

Both ready.

The Herald's light burned brighter now.

"Adaptation complete."

Hiroto's shadow tightened around his arms.

"…Good."

He stepped forward again.

"…So am I."

The final phase of the battle had begun.

To be continued…
