Today.
Kushina was in an unusually good mood because Mikoto had finally agreed to accompany her shopping.
Since the second round of the Chunin Exams ended, Mikoto Uchiha had become nearly impossible to find.
Either she was summoned by the so-called clan elders or secluded in the clan grounds for training.
Kushina had tried to reach out several times, only to be gently rejected.
This time, Mikoto had taken the initiative to agree, making Kushina overjoyed.
Yet, as they walked, Mikoto's expression remained calm, even cold.
Gone was the gentle warmth she once had.
The two Vulpix, however, were the complete opposite.
The Fire Six-Tails and Ice Vulpix darted around their feet, sometimes colliding playfully, other times chasing after petals, thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Kushina couldn't hold back any longer. "Mikoto, you seem... deeply troubled?"
Mikoto forced a faint, barely-there smile. "It's nothing. Just... Kushina, do you think it was appropriate for you to invite me out today?"
At that, the atmosphere shifted subtly.
"Appropriate? What do you mean?"
Kushina was completely taken aback.
Mikoto lifted her gaze to the street, taking in the bustling center of Hidden Leaf Village.
Her Two-Tomoe Sharingan glinted under the sunlight. "I am an Uchiha.
You are an Uzumaki. Though not from the Senju clan, you are still aligned with the Hokage's faction. Our positions in the village... are no longer the same."
Kushina stood frozen.
Mikoto continued, her voice low yet tinged with a calm sorrow:
"The clan elders are pushing me more and more to become the next Clan Head. Some even say I can embody the Uchiha's sun."
"And you..."
Mikoto turned to look at her, "Lord Hokage is considering having Tsunade take you as her official disciple. You are the core of the future Hokage lineage."
The clearer the power dynamics of Hidden Leaf were spelled out, the more the air seemed to freeze.
Kushina remained rooted to the spot.
She had never thought deeply about any of this.
She just...
wanted to go shopping with her good friend.
"I... I don't understand," Kushina murmured.
Mikoto sighed. "Kushina, you're still too naive."
"In the eyes of the clan, being seen with you would be viewed as the Uchiha showing weakness to the Hokage. And your appearance with me would make the Senju, Uzumaki, and Hokage factions question your loyalty."
"Do you understand what that means?"
Kushina pressed her lips together, her eyes slightly reddening.
But Mikoto suddenly turned to leave.
"W-wait!"
Kushina hurriedly reached out to stop her.
Yet the moment her hand lightly touched Mikoto, a mix of piercing cold and scorching heat erupted instantly.
Hiss!
Kushina jerked her hand back as if burned.
Mikoto paused, her back unwavering.
Her body temperature...
No, it was her Chakra, in a state post-Sunlight Awakening.
At that moment, Kushina whispered:
"Why... why does it have to be like this?"
A Sunfire Line spread from Mikoto's shoulder, forming faint golden flame patterns.
Without turning around, she spoke calmly, coolly, yet resolutely:
"Kushina, I told you..."
"I am a member of the Uchiha clan."
With that, she stepped forward and continued walking.
The Fire Six-Tails glanced back, let out a cry, and hurried after its master.
The streets were bustling with people, yet Kushina stood alone in a daze.
Ice Vulpix rubbed against her calf, letting out a worried whimper.
Kushina bit her lip, staring down at her palm.
Growing up wasn't just about becoming stronger.
It also meant being forced to confront the harsh realities of being a ninja, of politics, and of family.
And without her realizing it, a rift had begun to form between her and Mikoto.
Like fire and ice.
As if bound by an ancient fate, they were being torn apart.
"Someday, we'll end up on opposite sides of a battle…"
An unknown amount of time passed.
On the twilight streets of the Hidden Leaf Village.
Kushina wandered aimlessly, like a lost child.
The crowds, the noise, the warmth from the shops—she couldn't hear any of it.
Mikoto's figure was seared into her mind like a brand—cold, distant, and burning with an intensity that kept Kushina at bay.
"Why… did it have to turn out like this…"
She hung her head, her thoughts in turmoil.
Just as she was about to stumble into a street corner, a familiar voice gently called out, "Kushina?"
She looked up.
Minato Namikaze stood bathed in the sunset, holding an ice pop, his smile as warm as a spring breeze.
"Want some? This ice pop is really good."
As he spoke, he broke the ice pop in two and offered one half to Kushina.
The chill of the ice pop spread through her palm, and she finally lifted her head to see Minato's smile.
The next second—
Kushina burst into tears.
She couldn't hold it back.
Like a water balloon that had been popped, all her pent-up grievances came pouring out.
She threw herself into Minato's arms, clutching his clothes tightly. "Waaah… Mikoto won't talk to me anymore…"
Minato staggered from the impact, nearly dropping the ice pop, but he steadied her by the shoulders.
"W-Wait… What happened?"
Kushina sobbed, gasping for breath. "She said… she said we're on different sides now… She's an Uchiha, I'm an Uzumaki… We can't just hang out together anymore…"
"And she said something about clan, politics, family expectations… I really don't understand…"
"I just wanted to go shopping with her…"
Minato gently patted her back, soothing her with each touch.
"Mikoto feels her responsibilities have grown heavier, but that doesn't mean she doesn't care about you," Minato said softly.
"I don't want to be against her… I don't… I don't want that day to come."
Kushina looked up again, her eyes red and swollen like a rabbit's. "Minato… Can you promise me? Will that day really never come?"
Minato looked at her.
In that instant, his gaze shifted from gentle to resolute.
Without a hint of hesitation.
"Of course not."
"Don't just comfort me!" Kushina wiped her tears. "These things… aren't up to us…"
But Minato suddenly smiled.
It was the same warm, irresistible smile, yet now it carried a burning idealism.
"Kushina, I'm not comforting you."
"I'm telling you the truth."
He gently brushed the bangs from her forehead and spoke in a calm, firm tone. "In the third round of exams, I will take first place."
"I'm about to become Lady Tsunade's disciple, and this time, I will defeat everyone."
"In the future… I will become Hokage."
"By then, all clan rivalries, family conflicts, and barriers of identity—since you don't want to face being against Mikoto—"
He reached out and gently tapped Kushina's chest:
"I will change all this, create a truly ideal Hidden Leaf Village."
Kushina froze.
Minato stood against the sunset, as if light emanated from behind him.
She whispered, "Can you really do it?"
"I will definitely do it."
"That way you won't need to oppose Mikoto, or anyone else."
"Because in the future I build, there will be a place for all of you."
Kushina's nose tingled, and she wanted to cry again, but this time it was from overwhelming warmth.
"Then... I'll believe in you this once."
Minato handed her the remaining half of the popsicle, smiling brightly: "Then let's start with eating this popsicle."
Kushina lowered her head and took a firm bite of the popsicle.
Stealing a glance at Minato, she happened to meet his gaze, and both of them blushed simultaneously.
