Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Shadow in the Night

Chapter 14: The Shadow in the Night

Kakashi had based his judgment on what he observed during the survival exercise. Naruto's performance had surprised him—there was no denying that. But that level of strength was still far from being able to crush a Chūnin without leaving a trace.

Mizuki had been killed without any chance to fight back. To accomplish that, the killer needed at least elite Jōnin-level power. In Kakashi's assessment, Naruto simply didn't have that kind of ability.

What Kakashi didn't know, however, was that Naruto had not used his full strength during the exercise. Every move Naruto made, every technique he revealed—it was all carefully calculated. Kakashi saw only what Naruto wanted him to see.

If you don't hold back against these old foxes, Naruto thought, you'll never stay hidden.

The Third Hokage listened to Kakashi's report and nodded in agreement. His suspicions aligned perfectly with his former student's assessment.

Finally, Hiruzen shifted his focus away from Naruto as a suspect. "I see," he said quietly. "You may go."

Kakashi bowed slightly and left the office.

Once alone, the Third Hokage exhaled softly and returned to his paperwork, the matter apparently closed.

Elsewhere, night had fallen.

The sky was brilliant with stars, and the bright moon cast silver light across the dark streets of Konoha.

After signing in at Training Ground Three, Naruto made his way to the barbecue restaurant hosting the celebration banquet.

Inside, the atmosphere was lively and warm. Nearly all the newly graduated genin and their instructors had already arrived—including Sasuke and Sakura. They were laughing, eating, and celebrating their new status as full-fledged ninjas.

When Naruto walked in, Sakura's face lit up. She waved enthusiastically.

"Naruto! Naruto! Over here!"

Naruto smiled and walked toward her. Surrounding Sakura were the other genin of their year: Shikamaru Nara, Ino Yamanaka, Hinata Hyūga, Chōji Akimichi, and others. They had gathered at several tables pushed together, talking and laughing loudly.

At a nearby table sat the Jōnin instructors—Asuma Sarutobi, Kurenai Yūhi, and surprisingly, Kakashi, who had somehow arrived before Naruto despite leaving the training ground later.

As Naruto approached, Asuma and Kurenai's eyes immediately locked onto him. They stared for a long moment, their gazes sharp and curious, before finally looking away.

"Kakashi," Asuma murmured, keeping his voice low so the genin wouldn't hear over the noise. "That's the Fourth's…?"

Kakashi gave a slight nod but said nothing. Kurenai's eyes lingered on Naruto a moment longer before she turned back to her food.

Their voices were barely whispers, lost in the clamor of the crowded restaurant. But Naruto's enhanced hearing caught every word. He ignored them and continued to Sakura's table.

No sooner had he sat down than Ino Yamanaka popped up from her seat, slid over next to him, and beamed with enthusiastic warmth.

"You're finally here! I've been waiting forever!"

Naruto managed an awkward smile, but before he could respond, Ino pressed on.

"Sakura told me you held your own against your Jōnin instructor! That's amazing! Our instructors completely wiped the floor with us. How did you do it, Naruto?"

Ino looked at him with stars in her eyes, practically vibrating with curiosity.

"Yeah, yeah!" another genin chimed in. "Naruto, you've been hiding so much from us! You always acted like a dead-last, but you're secretly amazing! Tell us your secret!"

Voices piled on top of each other, buzzing around Naruto like a swarm of flies. Questions, exclamations, demands—all directed at him. His head began to ache.

Seeing his discomfort, Sakura quickly stepped in. "Hey, all of you! Naruto just got here, and you're already interrogating him! I knew I shouldn't have said anything!"

Ino stuck out her tongue playfully, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Alright, alright. We'll lay off. For now." She raised her cup. "Come on, everyone—a toast! To finally becoming ninjas!"

"Cheers!"

The genin raised their cups together, celebrating this milestone in their young lives. Laughter and chatter filled the restaurant once more.

Amidst the noise, Naruto sat quietly, a small, polite smile on his face. He seemed out of step with the boisterous celebration—a calm eye in the storm—but that didn't stop others from occasionally leaning over to bother him with questions he skillfully deflected.

The night passed quickly.

Most of the young genin had drunk more than they should have. Officially, they were far too young for alcohol, but tonight was a special occasion—the night they became ninjas, a turning point that would shape the rest of their lives. No one tried to stop them from celebrating.

After the food was finished, the drinks drained, and the laughter began to fade, the group slowly dispersed. The purpose of the gathering had been simple: to let everyone know which of their peers had made the cut, to forge early connections before they were sent off on different paths.

Naruto left early. The loud, crowded atmosphere had never suited him.

He walked alone through the nighttime streets. The roads were dark, lit only by the occasional flickering lamppost casting weak pools of orange light. His solitary figure looked small and lonely against the empty streets—a single shadow moving through the sleeping village.

A cool night breeze brushed against his face as he walked.

The main road was unnaturally quiet tonight. So quiet, in fact, that it was almost unsettling.

Naruto was nearly at his apartment door when he stopped mid-step. His eyes narrowed.

Without turning around, he spoke into the deserted darkness.

"Come out. You've been following me for quite a while."

Silence.

No response. No movement. The street remained empty, still. Anyone else might have believed they had imagined the feeling of being watched.

But Naruto knew someone was there.

He had sensed it the moment he left the barbecue restaurant. The follower was skilled at concealment—better than most. But no matter how well they hid, they couldn't escape Naruto's perception.

"Do I need to come find you myself?"

His voice had grown colder. Sharper.

This was not like the ANBU the Third Hokage occasionally sent to monitor him. Those watchers kept their distance, observing from afar without ever approaching. They were content simply to watch.

But this person was different. They pressed closer, edging nearer with every block Naruto walked. There was an intent behind their movements—a readiness to strike.

Finally, the shadow seemed to realize that hiding was useless.

From a darkened corner between two buildings, a figure emerged.

They wore a black combat uniform—tight, practical, designed for silent movement. A fox mask concealed their face, hiding all expression. Only their eyes were visible through the slits, gleaming faintly in the dim light.

The figure stepped fully into the street, facing Naruto directly.

The night air grew heavy.
