The battle was over.
Behind the camp.
Seeing the title, Agent Carter's heart tightened.
She vaguely sensed that the conversation was happening on a hospital bed.
This… this could happen between her and Steve.
Her breathing quickened.
Women naturally love beauty. Who wants to see themselves aged and frail?
And even worse…
If what appeared later in the video actually came to pass seventy years from now…
If it really happened between her and Steve…
Then… there would certainly be a scene like this:
She, nearly ninety, lying weakly on a hospital bed.
Captain America—Steve—still looking youthful.
The sight alone… would be painfully jarring.
What would Steve say to her then? Would he think she was ugly or old? Would he even say anything?
Sorry, Peggy, I have a new girlfriend this lifetime…
And not just one—two.
One of them is Black Widow.
And the other?
Yes, you guessed it… your niece, Sharon Carter.
Surprised? Shocked?
Don't worry, Peggy. I'll be your family's cherished boyfriend! I'll take care of your niece, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter!
"Aaaahhh!!!"
Thinking about such a possibility, Agent Carter screamed to the sky.
She rushed to a nearby tree and slammed into it.
The tree shook violently, leaves flying everywhere.
Captain America instinctively stepped back a few paces.
He felt strange. How could the sweet, adorable Peggy suddenly turn into this?
Ladies… they're strange creatures indeed.
On the screen.
The video continued to play.
[In the hospital room.]
Peggy Carter's hair was silver, her face lined with wrinkles, lying softly in bed.
[By her side.]
Two photos were displayed.
One was of her and her daughter.
Captain America broke the silence:
Captain America: "Peggy, you should be proud of yourself."
Peggy gazed at the man who had been gone for seventy years.
Peggy: "I've lived so long, and my only regret… is you. You didn't live your own life."
Steve frowned slightly.
Peggy: "What happened?"
Captain America: "I've always tried to do what's right. But now… even that principle is shaken. I thought I could always return to the army, obey orders, defend my country. But everything is different now."
Peggy smiled.
Peggy: "You always exaggerate, Steve. You saved the world, then and now. And here we are, still messing things up."
Captain America: "Part of the reason I stayed… was hearing about your involvement in founding S.H.I.E.L.D…"
Peggy took Steve's hand, interrupting him.
Peggy: "The world has changed. We can't go back. All we can do is try our best. Sometimes the best choice… is to start over."
She coughed violently.
Steve immediately got up, fetching water for her. He handed her a cup. Just to help her drink.
Unexpectedly, Peggy seemed to see Steve again. Her eyes filled with disbelief.
Peggy: "Steve?"
Captain America: "I'm here."
Tears welled up in Peggy's eyes. She could no longer control her emotions.
Peggy: "You… you're alive. You… you finally came back."
Seeing Peggy like this, Steve felt a pang of heartache.
He knew exactly what had happened. The beauty before him… had succumbed to the passage of time. She had Alzheimer's.
Even though Steve had mentally prepared for this, seeing it firsthand caused a sharp pang in his chest.
Then he realized—this was the first time Peggy was truly seeing him here.
He quickly composed himself and smiled.
Captain America: "Yes, Peggy. I'm back."
Her voice was a mixture of sorrow, regret, and the joy of seeing an old friend again.
Peggy: "It's been so long…"
Captain America: "How could I leave my beautiful Peggy behind? You still owe me a dance."
Behind the camp.
People's moods were heavy.
Peggy had never imagined she'd grow this old, her face lined, hair fully white.
And eventually… she would develop Alzheimer's.
In the video, she looked at herself and within five seconds forgot the man who had once worried her.
She admitted it—she was scared.
Peggy squeezed Steve's hand. Firmly.
She inhaled deeply, holding on for a long moment before finally letting go.
Then she looked at him, asking:
"Steve… tell me… when the future comes… will you still love me?"
Steve held her hand with his other hand. Softly, he spoke:
"Yes. In my heart, you will always be that beautiful lady."
Peggy pressed her lips together.
"Then… even if I look like this in the future… old and frail… do you mind?"
She was afraid of his answer. Afraid of the loss of beauty. Afraid of what Steve would think.
She had just seen it.
Steve pointed at the floating screen and said:
"Peggy… I won't let you grow old alone."
"Did you see this screen? It has the most advanced future technology."
"There was even a time when an extremely powerful and evil virus appeared."
"I think the upcoming video will show the Super Soldier Serum."
"And we have the greatest inventor of this century—Howard—by our side."
"We must trust in his ability and inventions. He will recreate the Super Soldier Serum."
"Once the serum is injected… what should I call you?
For example… Captain Carter?"
Steve's reassurance eased Peggy's fear.
She even found the idea of "Captain Carter" amusing.
Peggy: "Ha! Steve, you're so funny. You even thought of the name Captain Carter. But… what if we both took the serum?"
"Maybe… there really would be a female Captain Carter in this world."
Steve shook his head.
"No… if I could choose again… I'd want to be like Tony. Iron Man. Honestly… I've always wanted his Mark armor. I really don't know what it would feel like to wear the armor and be Iron Man in this era."
