Chapter 27 - Departures

Azure Cloud City no longer floated.

Even days later — that reality still felt *wrong.*

Massive support pillars had been constructed beneath damaged districts to prevent further collapse while reconstruction teams worked endlessly across the ruined city. The once-proud pathways of the floating metropolis now rested against the mountains below like broken wings.

And everywhere — people were rebuilding.

Some repaired homes. Some searched for missing family members. Others prepared funeral rites for those who would never return.

The war had moved on.

But Azure Cloud City was still bleeding.

Cold wind passed quietly through the shattered outer gates while soldiers continued reinforcing damaged walls nearby. Chrono stood near the ruined entrance adjusting the strap over his shoulder. Beside him, Vael remained silent as always — bandages still wrapped around parts of his arms and shoulders, yet somehow he still looked ready to return to battle immediately if necessary.

Neither spoke for a while.

Then — the sound of marching echoed from beyond the mountain roads.

Chrono looked up slightly.

A military convoy emerged slowly through the fog-covered path leading toward Azure Cloud City. Different banners moved together above the formation — *Lionhart, Silverpine,* several others Chrono didn't recognize. Dozens of soldiers marched behind supply wagons loaded with medicine, weapons, food crates, and emergency construction materials. Some looked exhausted enough to collapse where they stood. They had clearly traveled nonstop for days.

At the front — Matt.

The veteran commander slowed the moment he saw Azure Cloud City grounded against the mountains. The ruined districts. The collapsed pathways. The smoke still drifting into the sky.

For once — he didn't joke immediately.

"…Damn."

Quiet. Heavy.

One of the Lionhart soldiers behind him lowered his head slowly. "…We were too late."

Silence spread briefly across the convoy. Some of the arriving soldiers stared openly at the city in disbelief. Others simply looked away.

Because everyone understood what it meant.

A floating city had fallen.

Matt eventually noticed Chrono and Vael standing near the broken gate. "…Of course you two are still alive."

Chrono raised an eyebrow slightly. "That your greeting?"

"It means I'm relieved."

Matt walked toward them slowly, exhaustion visible beneath his eyes — dark circles resting beneath them like he hadn't slept properly in days.

"I came from Lionhart as soon as we received the emergency transmission." He glanced toward the ruined city again. "…Didn't think we'd arrive to see Azure Cloud on the ground."

Behind Matt's convoy, more forces continued arriving through the mountain roads. Different armor styles. Different weapons. Some soldiers carried curved blades while others wore heavier northern-style armor plated with silver markings. A few healers immediately rushed deeper into the city carrying emergency supplies. Others silently joined reconstruction efforts without waiting for orders.

One exhausted messenger moved through the gathered soldiers distributing emergency war bulletins. Several loose pages scattered through the cold wind near the shattered gate.

Chrono caught one instinctively before it blew away.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

**URGENT TRANSPORT REPORT**

— Medical supply shortages reported across three territories.

— Emergency escort requests exceed available personnel.

---

Nearby, several arriving soldiers quietly read their own copies.

"…Black Hollow fell?"

"That fortress survived two previous wars…"

"…Northwatch still hasn't responded?"

One soldier lowered the paper slowly. "…Then they're probably already gone."

Silence spread afterward. Not panic.

*Acceptance.*

Matt rubbed his face tiredly before pulling several sealed documents from beneath his coat. "I was originally supposed to head toward MistHaven after this."

Chrono's attention shifted immediately. "MistHaven?"

Matt nodded. "One of the outer trade cities." He handed the documents toward Chrono. "They handle nearly seventy percent of continental transportation routes."

Vael crossed his arms quietly nearby.

Matt continued. "Food. Medicine. Military supplies. Trade caravans. Most cities rely on MistHaven routes to survive." His expression darkened slightly. "And demons figured that out."

Chrono glanced back toward the report. "Transport routes are collapsing."

"Yeah." Matt sighed heavily. "Smaller territories are already starting to ration supplies."

One of the nearby Silverpine soldiers muttered quietly: "If MistHaven falls, half the continent starves."

The atmosphere became heavier immediately.

Matt looked toward Chrono again. "MistHaven requested additional support after repeated demon attacks along their transport routes." He glanced toward the ruined city behind them. "But after Azure Cloud…" His shoulders lowered slightly. "…I'm needed here instead."

Then he rubbed his forehead tiredly. "And if I delay my retirement paperwork again, I might actually lose my mind."

Chrono almost smiled.

*Almost.*

Vael remained completely serious. "…Weak."

"DON'T START."

Matt pointed at him immediately. "I survived three large-scale demon campaigns." He gestured dramatically toward the grounded city. "And now I'm standing in a fallen floating city while carrying paperwork."

Even some nearby soldiers laughed weakly at that. The tension eased slightly.

*Only slightly.*

Matt eventually looked between Chrono and Vael quietly. "…So you're leaving."

Chrono nodded once. Vael answered calmly. "There's nothing left for me here."

Matt studied him briefly before sighing quietly. "…Fair enough."

Then he handed the sealed documents toward Chrono fully. "Take the MistHaven request."

Chrono frowned slightly. "You trust me with that?"

Matt snorted. "You survived *Skarnyx*." A pause. "…Mostly."

Chrono accepted the documents silently.

Then — rapid footsteps echoed behind them.

"WAIT —!"

All three turned.

Lin ran toward the gate breathing heavily, still partially wrapped in fresh bandages. She nearly lost balance before stopping in front of them.

"…Take me with you."

Chrono blinked once. Vael remained silent.

Lin lowered her head slightly, struggling to steady her breathing. "Next time…" Her hands tightened slowly. "…I don't want to stand there helpless again."

Silence followed briefly. The cold mountain wind passed quietly through the shattered gates around them.

Chrono looked toward Vael. Vael looked toward Lin.

Then both silently reached the same conclusion.

"She'll survive," Vael said calmly.

Lin looked immediately offended. "…That's your approval?"

"Yes."

"…You're horrible at encouragement."

"Correct."

Chrono sighed quietly. "…Fine."

Relief crossed Lin's face instantly. "Thank you."

Matt stared at the three of them for several moments before laughing weakly. "…This generation is terrifying."

The convoy behind him slowly continued entering Azure Cloud City while reconstruction teams moved endlessly across the damaged districts. The world hadn't stopped.

Even after disaster — it kept moving.

Eventually, Chrono, Vael, and Lin stepped beyond the shattered gates together.

Behind them — Azure Cloud City remained wounded but alive. Ahead — mountain roads disappeared into thick fog stretching across the distant horizon.

For a while, none of them spoke.

Then Chrono suddenly stopped walking.

Someone had passed through the distant crowd ahead. Tall. Silver hair partially visible beneath a dark hood.

And — long ears.

Chrono's eyes narrowed immediately.

Vael glanced sideways. "What?"

Chrono kept staring toward the fading figure disappearing deeper into the fog-covered road. "…Did you see that?"

Lin blinked once. "The elf?"

Silence.

Chrono slowly turned toward her. "…Elf?"

Lin frowned slightly. "…Yeah?"

A strange chill crawled slowly down Chrono's spine.

Because in the game —

*there were no elves.*
