Instead, fate—and whatever twisted cosmic editor writes destinies—casts her in the one role she should never have been reborn into: the fat, ugly, unwanted maiden chosen for sacrifice.

The voice came again, patient and persistent, accompanied by a gentle pressure on her shoulder.


Wish surfaced from sleep slowly, dragging herself toward consciousness with the specific reluctance of someone who had been sleeping deeply and resented the interruption. She opened her eyes to a maid standing over her, expression apologetic but determined.


Wish squinted at her. "What is going on. Why are you waking me up this early?"


Across the room, a second maid was already pulling the curtains open. The dream realm's perpetual in-between light filtered through and Wish winced, blinking, her brain beginning its reluctant loading process.


The first maid took a small step back. "Your Highness, the deities left instructions. You are to prepare thoroughly today."


Wish sat up slowly. "Where are they? And why thoroughly?"
