Chapter 311 - Chapter 311: The Professor's Gambit

Chapter 311: The Professor's Gambit

"Shadow Clone Technique!"

A burst of white smoke erupted across the scorched battlefield. When it cleared, Sarutobi Hiruzen stood in duplicate—two identical forms of the Third Hokage, each one bearing the full weight of his chakra, each one a perfect replication of the original. The clone gripped a massive Fūma Shuriken, its four blades gleaming with reflected crimson light.

The Shadow Clone Technique was one of Konoha's most versatile and dangerous jutsu. Unlike the basic Clone Technique—which produced insubstantial illusions that the Byakugan could pierce with a glance—the Shadow Clone created perfect physical duplicates. Every clone shared the user's chakra equally. Every clone possessed independent thought and action. Even the Sharingan, even the Byakugan, could not distinguish the original from the copy. It had been developed by Tobirama Senju specifically to counter the Uchiha clan's visual prowess, and it had proven so effective that it had been classified as a forbidden technique.

Yet despite its dangers—the chakra drain, the physical exhaustion, the risk of dividing one's strength too thinly—the Shadow Clone remained one of the most coveted jutsu in the shinobi world. Its applications were endless. Training. Reconnaissance. Combat. The experiences of every clone returned to the user upon dispersal, making it a tool of unparalleled utility. Every transmigrator who found themselves in this world inevitably gravitated toward it.

"Grandpa Hokage! That's Grandmother Mito's body!" Kushina's voice cracked with desperation. "You can't—"

"There is no other way." Hiruzen's voice was heavy, laden with a grief he could not afford to indulge. "The Tailed Beast has consumed its Jinchūriki. Lady Mito has lost consciousness. If I do not stop her now—if the Nine-Tails fully manifests—the consequences will be catastrophic. Not just for us. For the entire village. For everyone."

He met Kushina's eyes, and for a moment, the mask of the Hokage slipped. Beneath it was an old man. Tired. Heartbroken. But resolute.

"As Hokage, it is my duty to protect this village. Even if it costs me my life."

And if the situation becomes irreversible, he thought grimly, I will use that technique. The Dead Demon Consuming Seal. I will drag the Nine-Tails into the Shinigami's stomach with my own hands, even if I must follow it into death.

"NINJA ART: SHURIKEN SHADOW CLONE TECHNIQUE!"

The two Hiruzens hurled their Fūma Shuriken simultaneously. The massive blades cut through the night sky, spinning with lethal precision—and then multiplied. One became two. Two became four. Four became eight. Within the span of a heartbeat, the sky was filled with a storm of spinning steel, thousands of shuriken blotting out the blood-red moon. On a battlefield, this single technique could decimate an entire company of enemy shinobi.

The Nine-Tails, wearing Mito's face, regarded the approaching storm with naked contempt.

A roar tore from the possessed body—not Mito's voice, but the deep, resonant bellow of the fox. The creature raised one arm. Scarlet chakra erupted from the limb, shaping itself into a massive clawed appendage that dwarfed the human form beneath it. The Chakra Arm swept through the air in a single, devastating arc.

The shuriken storm shattered. Thousands of spinning blades disintegrated into fragments of smoke and steel, their momentum annihilated by the sheer force of the fox's chakra. The shockwave continued, rippling outward, slamming into the Third Hokage's position with the force of a hurricane.

Hiruzen hurled himself backward, his white robes billowing. The Chakra Arm pursued him, extending impossibly, its claws gouging trenches in the earth as it chased his retreating form. More arms sprouted from Mito's back—dozens of them, writhing and lashing like serpents. They struck from every angle, a dance of destruction that turned the sealed ground into a nightmare of craters and fissures.

This power—! Even for a Kage of Hiruzen's caliber, the Nine-Tails' might was overwhelming. He could only dodge. A single direct hit would be fatal.

"FIRE STYLE: ASH PILE BURNING TECHNIQUE!"

"WATER STYLE: GREAT WATERFALL TECHNIQUE!"

The two Shadow Clones unleashed their jutsu simultaneously. From one, a cloud of superheated ash billowed forth, so hot it glowed white at its core. From the other, a torrent of water surged like a river breaking its banks. The two techniques collided in midair above Mito's position—and combined.

Ash and water. Heat and cold. The chemical reaction was instantaneous. The mixture hardened into a substance resembling quick-drying cement, cascading down over the possessed body of Uzumaki Mito. The ground around her solidified, encasing her feet, her legs, her torso in a rapidly hardening shell.

"EARTH STYLE: SWAMP OF THE UNDERWORLD!"

Hiruzen's hands blurred through seals. The ground beneath the cement-encased Mito liquefied into a viscous bog, and she began to sink. The combination was ingenious—first immobilize, then entrap, then bury. A triple-layered prison designed to seal the Nine-Tails before it could fully manifest.

For a moment, it seemed to work.

Then the fox laughed.

The Tailed Beast Cloak flared. The cement prison cracked. Exploded. The nine phantom tails slammed into the swamp with the force of piledrivers, launching the possessed body skyward. Mito's form hung in the air for a breath, suspended by the fox's chakra, then landed lightly on solid ground, utterly unbound.

"Impressive," the Nine-Tails purred through Mito's lips. "For a mere human. But you are not Hashirama. You are not Madara. You are nothing."

Hiruzen's expression did not waver. He had expected this. The combination attack had never been intended to defeat the Nine-Tails. It had been a delaying tactic. A distraction.

He had bought himself exactly enough time.

The Third Hokage raised his right hand to his mouth and bit down hard on his thumb. Blood welled. He smeared it across his left palm, tracing the summoning formula with practiced precision, then slammed his hand against the earth.

"SUMMONING TECHNIQUE!"

Black seals raced across the ground in a radial pattern, spreading like cracks in reality itself. A massive plume of white smoke erupted, swallowing the battlefield. When it cleared, a new figure stood beside the Hokage.

A giant ape. Four meters tall. Clad in a patterned tiger-skin tunic. Its face was fierce—not the gentle visage of a domesticated animal, but the scarred, weathered countenance of a warrior who had seen countless battles. Silver-white hair bristled from its head. A Konoha forehead protector was tied proudly around its brow.

Monkey King Enma. The Ape Demon. The personal summon of the Sarutobi clan, bound by a contract that stretched back generations. His body possessed the indestructible hardness of diamond. He could transform into an adamantine staff capable of splitting mountains. He could form hand seals. He could use ninjutsu. And in the early days of the village, Orochimaru himself had called him the strongest summoning beast in existence.

"Sarutobi!" Enma's voice was a rumble of thunder. "What's the situation?"

"The Jinchūriki has fallen. The Nine-Tails has seized control of Lady Mito's body. I need your help."

Enma's eyes—sharp, intelligent, ancient—fixed on the possessed form of Uzumaki Mito. The fox's chakra was visible even to non-sensors now, a blazing corona of hatred that warped the air around it. The ape's animal instincts screamed a warning. This was a threat beyond ordinary comprehension.

"Nine-Tails," Enma growled. "I haven't faced this beast since the days of the First Hokage."

"Transform. Adamantine Staff. This will be a fierce battle."

Enma did not waste words. His body shimmered and compressed, flesh becoming metal, bone becoming steel. In the space of a heartbeat, the towering ape was gone. In his place, a black iron staff stood planted in the earth—the Kongōnyoi, the Adamantine Staff of legend. It could extend at will. It could divide mountains. It could shatter steel. And it was as unbreakable as the will of the monkey king himself.

Hiruzen grasped the staff. The weight was familiar in his hands—the weight of decades of partnership, of battles fought and won, of a bond that transcended summoner and summoned.

"Let's go, Enma."

He launched himself at the possessed Jinchūriki, the Adamantine Staff spinning in his grip. In the original timeline, this staff had pushed the fully manifested Nine-Tails clear out of Konoha Village. It had faced the ultimate Tailed Beast and held the line.

Now it would face the fox again—this time, with the fate of the village hanging in the balance.

The Nine-Tails, wearing Mito's face, smiled a terrible smile.

"Come then, little Hokage. Come and die like your predecessor."

The Adamantine Staff came crashing down. The Chakra Arms rose to meet it. And the battle for Konoha's soul began in earnest.
