Chapter 314: The Buddha and the Fox

Senju Hashirama. The First Hokage. The God of Shinobi.

There was no name in all of history that the Nine-Tails despised more. No memory it recoiled from with such visceral, instinctive hatred. Hashirama had not merely defeated the fox—he had humiliated it. The Wood Golem had caught its Tailed Beast Bombs like a parent catching a child's thrown ball. The Thousand-Armed Buddha had swatted it from the sky like an insect. And the Wood Release chakra—that cursed, suppressing, suffocating energy—had wrapped around its body and squeezed until the great Nine-Tails, the strongest of all Tailed Beasts, had been reduced to a helpless prisoner.

Decades had passed. Hashirama was dead. His bones were dust. And still the Nine-Tails dreamed of those wooden hands closing around it. Still it woke from its fitful sleep with the phantom sensation of bark pressing against its throat.

Now this human—this child—dared to invoke that name. Dared to suggest he could make the Nine-Tails relive that humiliation.

"Nine-Tails must be sealed," Sarutobi Hiruzen said, his voice heavy with the weight of command. "If this continues, Lady Mito's body will fail completely. Without her chakra suppressing the beast, the Nine-Tails will achieve true freedom. And once it does..."

He did not need to finish. Everyone present understood. The Three-Tails Isobu, after the death of the Fourth Mizukage, had simply retreated to a lake and lived peacefully, bothering no one. But the Nine-Tails was not Isobu. The fox's hatred for humanity had festered for a century. If it gained its freedom, it would not retreat. It would not rest. It would paint the continent in fire and blood until every human settlement was ash and memory.

"Hokage." Ragnar's voice was calm. "You have another option."

Hiruzen's expression flickered. "There is... a technique. But the price is too high."

Hatake Sakumo's face went pale. He knew. He had seen the Scroll of Seals. He knew what technique the Third Hokage was contemplating, and the knowledge turned his blood to ice. "Lord Hokage. You cannot. The Dead Demon Consuming Seal—"

"If I use it, the Nine-Tails will be sealed. That is what matters."

"And you will die!" Sakumo's voice cracked. "Konoha just won the war! If word spreads that the Hokage has fallen, the peace agreement becomes worthless overnight. The Four Great Nations will see weakness. The lesser villages will sense opportunity. Every enemy we've made will sharpen their blades. You're not just sacrificing yourself—you're risking everything we fought for!"

Hiruzen closed his eyes. When he spoke again, his voice was tired. Ancient. "And if the Nine-Tails goes free, there will be no village left to protect. No peace to preserve. No future to risk. Sometimes, Sakumo, a Hokage's duty is not to live. It is to ensure that others can."

The White Fang's hand trembled on his blade. He wanted to argue. Every fiber of his being screamed to argue. But he could not refute the Hokage's logic. The Nine-Tails, fully unleashed, was an extinction-level threat. Against such a catastrophe, one life—even the Hokage's—was an acceptable sacrifice.

Ragnar watched this exchange with unreadable eyes. He understood the calculus. The Dead Demon Consuming Seal was absolute. Once summoned, the Shinigami's blade fell without mercy, dragging both target and caster into eternal combat within the stomach of death itself. No resurrection. No escape. No counter. If Hiruzen used it, the Nine-Tails would be sealed. And Hiruzen would die.

That would solve several problems, a cold part of Ragnar's mind observed. No more Hiruzen watching my every move through his crystal ball. No more political dance. No more grandfatherly manipulation disguised as kindness.

But Hiruzen's death would also trigger chaos. The Third Shinobi World War might arrive years early. The careful balance of power would shatter. Every plan Ragnar had made—every preparation, every contingency—depended on a period of relative peace. He needed time. He needed stability.

He did not need a dead Hokage.

"Let me deal with the Nine-Tails," Ragnar said. "If I cannot subdue it, there will still be time for your technique."

Hiruzen stared at him. "You... you're serious. You intend to fight the Nine-Tails alone?"

"Trust him," Sakumo said. His voice was steady, but his eyes betrayed his doubt. This was the Nine-Tails. The strongest Tailed Beast. Even Ragnar, who had crushed the Five-Tails with his bare hands, would be tested beyond anything he had faced before.

The possessed body of Uzumaki Mito laughed—a horrible, grating sound that was equal parts Mito's voice and the fox's growl.

"Repent for your choice, human."

Her hands moved. Formed seals. The seal that bound the Nine-Tails—the seal that Uzumaki Mito had maintained for decades—began to unravel. Deliberately. Completely.

From Mito's body, crimson chakra erupted like a volcano. It was not the controlled leakage of before. It was not the partial manifestation that had produced the phantom tails. This was everything. The full, undiluted, apocalyptic power of the Nine-Tailed Fox pouring into the physical world in a torrent of malevolent energy.

The night sky turned scarlet. The blood moon above seemed to pulse in sympathy with the emerging beast. The ground shook. The air itself began to scream.

A typhoon of chakra exploded outward from the Four Red Yang Formation. Trees were uprooted. Boulders tumbled like pebbles. The barrier itself—maintained by four Jōnin who had trained for this exact scenario—shattered like glass. They were skilled. They were prepared. But they were not Kage. And the force that struck them was beyond any Kage.

CRACK.

The Four Red Yang Formation collapsed.

And the Nine-Tails rose.

Its true body materialized in the night sky above Konoha—a mountain of orange fur and lashing tails, its nine appendages whipping through the air like the lashes of an angry god. Its fangs were longer than a man was tall. Its claws could shred steel. Its eyes—those terrible, blazing eyes—swept across the village below with an expression of pure, undiluted triumph.

"ROOOOOOAR!"

The roar was not sound. It was pressure. It was terror. It was the voice of extinction given form. The shockwave flattened forests for miles. Rivers jumped their banks. Mountains trembled. In the distant village, children screamed and adults fell to their knees, their bodies refusing to move, their minds refusing to comprehend the scale of the horror before them.

Uzumaki Mito, bereft of the beast that had sustained her for so long, collapsed to the ground. Her breathing was shallow. Her pulse was faint. But she was alive. The Uzumaki bloodline's legendary vitality clung to life with stubborn, unyielding tenacity.

"Grandmother!" Kushina caught the frail body before it could strike the earth.

"Lady Mito!" Hiruzen was at her side in an instant. "What do we do? How can we reseal it?"

Mito's eyes fluttered open. Her voice, when it came, was barely a whisper—the voice of a woman who had spent every last reserve of her strength. "The Nine-Tails... is too strong... to seal from within. It must be done... from outside. But first... you must weaken it. You must... wound it... enough that the seal can take hold."

Hiruzen nodded heavily. "Understood."

The Nine-Tails looked down at the tiny figures below—the dying old woman, the trembling girl, the aging Hokage, the silver-haired swordsman—and its massive jaws curved into something resembling a smile.

"Foolish woman. I thought I would need to struggle for days to break free of your chains. But in the end, you unlocked the seal yourself. You handed me my freedom."

Mito did not respond. She had made her choice. Rather than let the Nine-Tails seize control of her body and use it to destroy everything she loved, she had released the beast entirely. Drawn it out. Gambled that, once freed, it could be weakened and sealed from without. It was a desperate plan. A final throw of the dice.

"Stupid fox," a voice said.

The Nine-Tails' triumphant expression froze.

"You're not as clever as you think."

Ragnar walked forward. Slowly. Deliberately. Each footstep was measured, unhurried, the stride of a man who had never encountered an obstacle he could not overcome. And as he walked, the darkness around him began to recede.

Golden light bloomed.

It started at his core—a faint, warm radiance that pulsed like a heartbeat. Then it grew. Spread. Intensified. The light was not harsh or blinding. It was the color of sunrise. The color of temple bells ringing across still water. The color of something vast and ancient and immeasurably powerful stirring from a long sleep.

In the void above Ragnar's head, a shape began to materialize.

It was golden. Colossal. Its form was that of a Buddha—serene of face, cross-legged in meditation, its hands folded in a mudra of peace. Behind its head, a halo of pure light rotated slowly, casting rays of gold across the devastated landscape. The sound of distant chanting seemed to emanate from nowhere and everywhere at once, a thousand voices raised in harmonious invocation.

The Thousand-Armed Buddha. The Daibutsu. The ultimate form of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu—the Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that Ragnar had carried since the early days of his journey. It had grown with him. Evolved with him. Its power had been honed in the crucible of the Second Shinobi World War, tested against Kage and Tailed Beast alike.

Now it faced its greatest challenge.

The Nine-Tails stared at the golden titan materializing before it. For a long moment, the fox did not move. Did not speak. Its ancient mind was processing a sensation it had not felt in decades.

This presence. This pressure. It's... it's like...

The Buddha opened its eyes.

And the Nine-Tails remembered fear.
