Chapter 317 - Chapter 317: The Final Seal

Chapter 317: The Final Seal

If it could do it all again, the Nine-Tails would have made a different choice. It would have stayed in its cage. It would have endured the darkness, the silence, the endless nothingness of the seal space. Better to be imprisoned than to be humiliated. Better to be bored than to be beaten within an inch of its life by a golden monstrosity that had no right to exist.

The Tailed Beasts were powerful. Immensely so. But their power was raw—a bulldozer of destruction that relied on overwhelming force rather than technique. Against ordinary shinobi, that was enough. Against someone who could match their scale and surpass their speed? The bulldozer met a bigger bulldozer. And the bigger bulldozer won.

This was why the Uchiha clan, with their ocular prowess, could enslave a Tailed Beast with a single glance. It was why the First Hokage had treated the Nine-Tails like a misbehaving pet. Raw power, unrefined by intelligence and technique, could only carry a creature so far. The Nine-Tails had never learned this lesson. It had never needed to.

Until tonight.

If the fox had cooperated with its Jinchūriki—if it had lent its power willingly, the way Naruto and Kurama would one day combine in the Sage Fox Mode—this battle might have gone very differently. But the Nine-Tails did not cooperate. It did not share. It only hated. And hatred, in the end, was not enough.

The fox lay on the devastated earth, its massive body covered in fist-shaped craters. Its head throbbed. Its stomach still burned from the detonation of its own Tailed Beast Bomb. It did not want to move. It did not want to think. It just wanted this night to end.

Above it, Uzumaki Mito rose on trembling legs. Her body was failing. Her life force was nearly spent. But her will—the iron will that had held the Nine-Tails in check for half a century—burned as bright as ever. Her hands moved through seals with the precision of long practice, and from her back, the Adamantine Sealing Chains erupted once more.

These chains were different from Kushina's. Thicker. Stronger. Imbued with decades of mastery and the full, undiluted power of the Uzumaki bloodline. They wrapped around the Nine-Tails' massive form, binding its legs, its tails, its snapping jaws. The fox's chakra, already depleted from the beating it had received, flickered and dimmed under the chains' suppression.

"Seal."

The word was quiet. Final.

The Nine-Tails' colossal body dissolved into a torrent of crimson chakra, spiraling inward, compressing, shrinking. Mito placed her withered hand against Kushina's abdomen, and through the medium of the sealing chains, the fox's essence flowed into its new container. The Eight Trigrams Seal blazed to life on Kushina's skin—black ink that glowed crimson for a single, searing moment before fading to invisibility.

And then it was done.

Uzumaki Mito poured the last dregs of her life force into the seal. She did not merely transfer the Nine-Tails. She built a cage stronger than the one she had maintained in her own body—a prison that would hold the fox at bay until Kushina grew strong enough to master it. The girl was not ready yet. She would be, one day. But until then, her grandmother's final gift would protect her.

"Grandmother..."

Kushina caught the frail body as it crumpled. She lowered Mito gently to the ground, cradling the old woman's head in her lap. The tears she had been holding back since the ceremony began finally overflowed, streaming down her cheeks in silent rivers.

"Death comes for everyone, Kushina." Mito's voice was barely a whisper now, each word an effort. "I believe... you will be a better Jinchūriki than I ever was. You have a strength I never possessed. You have people who love you. People who will stand beside you."

Her ancient eyes, clouded with pain and the approach of eternity, found Ragnar's silhouette against the fading golden light.

"Hold onto them. Hold onto him. And never let go."

Her eyes closed. Her breathing slowed. And Uzumaki Mito, the first Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails, the wife of the First Hokage, the matriarch of a fallen clan, passed peacefully from this world.

When a Jinchūriki was separated from their Tailed Beast, death was inevitable. The Uzumaki bloodline's legendary vitality could delay the end—could grant a few precious hours or days of borrowed time—but it could not prevent it. Mito had been ancient. She had been battered by the Nine-Tails' rampage. Her body had been pushed far beyond its limits. Even without the sealing, she would not have lasted much longer.

She had known this. And she had chosen to spend her final moments not fighting for her own survival, but securing Kushina's future.

"Grandmother..."

Kushina bent over the still form, her sobs raw and unguarded. The last of her blood family. The woman who had raised her, taught her, prepared her for this burden. Gone.

Ragnar released the Buddha form. The golden titan dissolved into motes of light, drifting upward like fireflies into the blood-red sky. His body felt... normal. The exhaustion he had expected did not come. The semi-Sage Body he had recently developed was already proving its worth. His physical reserves had been taxed, certainly. But he could fight another three hundred rounds if necessary. The transformation that had begun within him—the fusion of Haki and natural energy that he called the Source—was bearing fruit.

Ding.

A chime echoed in his mind. The system, dormant for so long, stirred to life.

A treasure chest materialized in his field of vision. Not the common bronze or silver chests that had become increasingly rare as his strength grew. This one gleamed with a brilliant, metallic white.

Platinum.

The last time he had seen a platinum chest was... he could not remember. The system's rewards had grown stingier as his power increased. Only truly significant battles—life-or-death struggles against overwhelming odds—triggered the highest-tier drops. The Nine-Tails, apparently, qualified.

Defeated: Nine-Tails. Experience points +30,000.

The numbers flickered in his peripheral awareness. 30,000 experience. A substantial sum. The Nine-Tails was, after all, a pivotal force in the entire narrative of this world—an alternative protagonist, in some ways, whose journey from hatred to reconciliation formed one of the story's central threads. Defeating it had earned a reward commensurate with its significance.

Ragnar stored the platinum chest in the system inventory. This was not the time or place to open it. Whatever it contained—a Devil Fruit, an ability enhancement, something entirely unexpected—could wait.

He walked to Kushina's side. She was still cradling her grandmother's body, her tears falling onto Mito's peaceful face. He did not speak. He simply stood beside her, a silent presence in the darkness.

"Ye Chen." Sarutobi Hiruzen's voice was hoarse with exhaustion and something deeper—gratitude, perhaps, or the particular humility of a leader who had just been shown exactly how inadequate his power truly was. "Thank you. Without your help, suppressing the Nine-Tails would have been... difficult. Even I would have been forced to pay a terrible price."

The Dead Demon Consuming Seal. The Shinigami's blade. Hiruzen had been ready to sacrifice himself. He had been one hand sign away from summoning the death god and dragging the Nine-Tails into eternal combat. Ragnar had spared him that fate.

"I am part of Konoha now," Ragnar replied. His voice was even. Unreadable. "When the village is in danger, I have a responsibility to act."

"...Truly." Hiruzen's expression was complicated. He believed the words. He also understood their careful ambiguity. Part of Konoha. Not loyal to Konoha. Not obedient to the Hokage. The distinction was subtle but significant.

"Kushina." Ragnar knelt beside her. "How do you feel?"

She looked up at him with red-rimmed eyes. "I'm... I'm fine. It's just... Grandmother, she..."

"She was proud of you. You heard her words." His voice was gentler than usual. Softer. "Don't let her down. Become an exceptional shinobi. Become Konoha's first female Hokage. That's what she wanted for you."

"...Is it really appropriate to discuss the Hokage's succession so openly?" Hiruzen muttered, glancing at Hatake Sakumo—the man who literally wore the Hokage Half-Sleeve on his arm, the designated successor, the future Fourth Hokage. "Sakumo is standing right here."

Sakumo, for his part, simply smiled and said nothing. If he became Hokage someday, he would happily pass the title to Kushina when the time came. The girl had more than earned it.

"Lord Hokage," Ragnar said, turning to face Hiruzen directly. "You agree, don't you? Kushina has the qualifications to become Hokage someday."

Hiruzen felt the trap closing around him. He looked at Kushina—the girl who had just become the Nine-Tails Jinchūriki, who had faced the fox's full fury and stood her ground, who was now weeping over her grandmother's body with a grief that was raw and real and utterly human. He looked at Ragnar—the young man who had just beaten the Nine-Tails into submission with his bare hands, who was waiting for an answer with an expression of polite, implacable expectation.

"Of course," the Third Hokage said, forcing warmth into his voice. "Kushina is an exceptional young woman. She will certainly inherit Lady Mito's will. I have no doubt she will become the first female Hokage in Konoha's history."

"I will remember those words, Lord Hokage." Ragnar's tone was perfectly respectful. It was also perfectly threatening.

Hiruzen made a mental note to never, ever make promises in front of Ragnar again. The boy collected them like weapons.

The first light of dawn was beginning to creep over the eastern mountains. The blood moon had faded. The crimson chakra had dispersed. The night of terror was ending.

And in the seal space deep within Kushina's soul, the Nine-Tails—battered, bruised, and thoroughly humiliated—curled into a ball and went to sleep. It did not want to think about what had happened. It did not want to remember the golden fists. It did not want to acknowledge that somewhere in Konoha, there was a human who could do what only Hashirama Senju had done before.

Next time, the fox thought, with the particular stubbornness of a creature that had learned nothing from its ordeal. Next time, I'll—

It fell asleep before it could finish the thought.

And in the spiritual plane, the Five-Tails was still laughing.
