Dinner was quieter than Tiana expected.
Not uncomfortable.
Just careful.
Every word felt like it was being measured.
Dare's father sat at the end of the table, watching everything without saying much.
Tiana noticed.
The way he listened.
The way he observed.
The way he asked questions that sounded normal but carried something deeper.
"So you write?"
Tiana looked up.
"Yes, sir."
"And you believe that is something you can build a future from?"
The question was not rude.
But it wasn't innocent either.
Tiana placed her spoon down gently.
"I believe anything done with consistency can become something."
His father looked at her.
"And if it doesn't?"
Tiana smiled slightly.
"Then I learn from it and try again."
A small silence followed.
Dare looked at her.
He knew that answer.
That was Tiana.
The person who could fall apart privately and still stand tall when the world was watching.
His father leaned back slightly.
Most people in his position would have tried to impress him.
They would have chosen their words carefully.
They would have tried to look perfect.
But Tiana wasn't doing that.
She wasn't pretending to be someone she wasn't.
And strangely…
That interested him.
"You're very confident."
Tiana shook her head softly.
"I'm not always confident."
She admitted.
"I'm just tired of letting fear make decisions for me."
For the first time that evening, something changed in his father's expression.
Barely.
A small movement.
Almost invisible.
But Dare noticed.
His father was impressed.
He would never say it.
Not now.
Not that easily.
But he saw something different in her.
Not just a girl his son brought home.
Someone with a mind of her own.
Someone who could stand in a room full of people who had more than her and still not shrink.
Later that night, Dare walked her outside.
The cool air hit her face immediately.
She released a breath.
"I survived."
Dare laughed.
"You did more than survive."
She looked at him.
"Your father is scary."
"He likes to test people."
"I noticed."
Dare smiled.
"But you didn't let him scare you."
Tiana looked back at the house.
For a second, she thought about the man standing inside.
The man who looked at her like he was searching for reasons to dislike her.
But somehow…
She felt like she gave him something else to think about.
"He doesn't hate me."
Dare looked surprised.
"What?"
Tiana shrugged.
"I think he was just trying to figure me out."
A small smile appeared on her face.
"And I think he was surprised."
Dare stared at her.
"You think?"
"Yes."
She smiled.
"People usually are."
And for the first time that night…
Dare's father stood by the window watching them leave.
His face remained unreadable.
Cold.
Controlled.
The same expression everyone knew.
But his thoughts were different.
Interesting.
That was the only word that came to his mind.
Because Tiana was not what he expected.
And that bothered him.
Not because he disliked her.
But because he couldn't ignore her.
