Chapter 291 - Chapter 290: The Realm of the Dragonlord

Years passed, as they always do when winter has been driven back and the work of living resumes.

By the twentieth year of Rhaegar's reign the black-brick roads reached from Storm's End to the Last Hearth, and a second, narrower road of the same make ran from White Harbor to Eastwatch. Grain moved. Men moved. News moved faster than it ever had in the age before the Long Night. The Gift was no longer a deserted buffer but a chain of small, stubborn villages where Free Folk and Northerners lived side by side under the watch of a Night's Watch that had grown larger and stranger than any Lord Commander of the previous century would have recognized. Some of its black brothers still kept the old vows in full. Others served for ten years and returned home with pensions and stories. A few wildling women wore the black and no one in Castle Black any longer found the sight remarkable.

The dragons grew with the realm.

The Silver Emperor's wingspan finally surpassed Balerion the Black Dread's recorded measure. The purple dragon and the black dragon were only a little smaller. They nested not only on Dragonstone but in a new fortified eyrie built into the northern face of the Dragonpit, and in a third site near Harrenhal where the air still smelled faintly of the old queen's pyre. Rhaegar flew them less often for war and more often for survey—counting herds, inspecting roads, reminding the Free Cities that the Narrow Sea still had a master. When he did ride to war it was brief and decisive: a short, brutal campaign against a coalition of Lysene and Tyroshi captains who had forgotten the lessons of Braavos, and a single afternoon's work above the Iron Islands when Crow's Eye's successors attempted to raise something best left drowned. The sea took the rest.

Roberta Baratheon proved as formidable in peace as she had been on the Wall. She sat the small council in her husband's absence, managed the royal household with a mixture of Stormlands bluntness and quiet precision, and raised their children with the firm expectation that none of them would grow up soft. Visenya, the eldest, claimed the purple dragon before her twelfth nameday and was already spoken of as the next Commander of the Stepstones. Aegon, darker and louder, preferred the training yard and the company of Northern cousins; by sixteen he could make the black dragon perform maneuvers that made the Dragonkeepers swear. Rhaenys, the youngest, spent more time in the libraries and the company of maesters than on dragonback, but when she did fly it was with a focus that reminded the court uncomfortably of her father in the final hours above the ice throne.

The old powers adapted or faded.

Tywin Lannister died in his bed at Casterly Rock, still rich, still feared, and still quietly resentful that the realm had not required him as much as he had once believed. Jaime remained Lord Commander of the Kingsguard until a grey winter in his forty-third year, when he finally accepted a lordship in the east of the Rock and left the white cloak to a younger man who had been a squire at Farwinter. Oberyn Martell never stayed long in any one city, but the network he built across the Free Cities and the Rhoyne kept the worst of the Essosi intrigues from ever reaching the point of open war. Braavos recovered its pride slowly, under a new Sealord who understood that the Titan's shadow no longer reached quite as far as it once had. The House of Black and White still stood, but its doors opened less often, and the blue crystals that had once filled its vaults were gone.

In the North the Starks endured.

Rickard lived to see his grandchildren play in the yards of Winterfell and died on a hunt in the wolfswood, as clean a death as any lord of the North could ask. Eddard ruled after him, quieter than his father, steadier than most, and never once forgot the sound the ice throne had made when it finally broke. Every year on the anniversary he rode to Farwinter with a small party and stood at the edge of the crater. Sometimes Rhaegar met him there. Sometimes he did not. The silence between them was the comfortable kind that only men who have shared a true winter can keep.

Of the Night King nothing more was ever seen.

Maesters and wildling woods-witches alike searched the Lands of Always Winter for decades and found only ice, old bones, and a cold that no longer seemed to watch. The god of cold, if it still existed, had withdrawn to places even dragons could not easily reach. Rhaegar never claimed the threat was gone forever. He only built as though the next Long Night might come in his children's time rather than his own, and taught those children to do the same.

In the thirty-first year of his reign, on a clear summer evening, Rhaegar Targaryen climbed the steps of the Dragonpit alone and sat for a long while on the warm stone with the Silver Emperor's great head resting near his shoulder. The city below was loud with the sound of a realm that had learned how to live without constant fear. Roberta found him there after the children had been sent to their own duties. She sat beside him without speaking for a time.

"You're thinking of the Wall again," she said at last.

"I'm thinking of how long the dawn has lasted," he answered. "And how much longer we can make it last."

She took his hand, the same way she had on the Wall when the Night King still stood.

"Then we keep working," she said simply.

Rhaegar looked out over King's Landing—the repaired roofs, the busy harbor, the distant silver thread of the new road running north—and allowed himself a small, tired, genuine smile.

"Yes," he said. "We keep working."

The Silver Emperor rumbled agreement, a sound like distant summer thunder.

Far to the north the Wall stood black and silent under the stars. Far to the east the Free Cities lit their own lamps. Between them the realm of the Dragonlord endured—scarred, imperfect, and alive.

And for the first time in an age, that was enough.
