Snow still fell, but it was only snow.
The white mist that had choked the Haunted Forest for so long was gone. In its place lay a battlefield of blackened earth, shattered ice, and the ordinary dead. Wights that had marched without rest now lay still, eyes empty. The last of the Others had crumbled into meltwater and bone the moment the Night King's light went out.
Rhaegar remained on one knee in the crater for a long time, True Dragon planted in the frozen ground beside him like a broken standard. The Silver Emperor crouched nearby, one wing held awkwardly, silver blood dripping from the frost-blackened gash across its chest. The purple dragon and the black dragon circled low, restless, still tasting the air for any remaining trace of the god of cold.
Boots crunched across the ice.
Eddard Stark was the first to reach him. The young man's face was streaked with soot and dried blood; Bear Claw hung loose in his hand. Behind him came the King-Beyond-the-Wall, two surviving giants, and a handful of black brothers. Lord Rickard arrived moments later, having descended the Wall by the nearest stair, Roberta close at his side.
Roberta did not wait for permission. She crossed the last distance at a run and dropped to her knees in front of Rhaegar, gloved hands framing his face.
"You're alive," she said, voice shaking only once. "You're alive."
Rhaegar managed a tired smile. "So it seems." He looked past her to Rickard and the others. "The throne?"
"Gone," Rickard answered. His voice was rough. "Nothing left but a hole in the ground and steam. The mist is lifting all the way to the horizon."
The King-Beyond-the-Wall spat into the snow. "My people are already burning the corpses. We won't give the cold a second chance."
Rhaegar nodded and tried to stand. His legs nearly failed him. Roberta and Eddard caught him under the arms. Only when he was steady did he notice how quiet the field had become. The cheering had died away; now the survivors simply stared—at him, at the dragons, at the empty crater where the Night King had been.
Maester Aemon, brought down from Castle Black on a litter, was helped forward. The old man's milky eyes turned toward the place where the ice throne had stood.
"Is it finished, Prince?" he asked.
Rhaegar looked at the cracked length of True Dragon, at the fading runes on his armor, at the exhausted faces around him.
"For now," he said. "The god of cold is patient. But its champion is dead, and its foothold is broken. That will have to be enough."
They made the slow journey back to Farwinter together.
The town that had been built as a forward fortress was half-ruined—walls scorched, trenches filled with ash and melted snow—but it still stood. Inside the gates the remaining wildlings, Night's Watch, and Northern levies gave a single, ragged cheer when they saw Rhaegar walking under his own power. Then the work of the living resumed: tending the wounded, burning the dead, counting the missing.
Old Bear Mormont's body was found near the outer trench, still armored, Bear Claw returned to his hand by Eddard. They built a pyre for him and for every man of the Direwolf Suicide Squad who had not come back. Rhaegar stood in silence until the flames rose high enough to be seen from the Wall.
That night the clouds finally broke. For the first time in months the stars were visible above the North.
Rhaegar sat on the low wall of Farwinter's yard, Roberta beside him, a thick cloak shared between them. The Silver Emperor slept nearby, healing already under the residual heat of dragonflame. In the distance the other two dragons kept watch.
"You meant what you said to the Night King," Roberta said quietly. "That we would be waiting."
"I did." Rhaegar's voice was low. "This was only one winter. There will be others. But the next time the cold rises, it will find more than three dragons and a broken sword waiting for it."
She leaned her head against his shoulder. "And what happens now?"
He looked south, toward the unseen Kingsroad and the long road home.
"Now we bury our dead. We mend what can be mended. And then I go to King's Landing and settle the rest of the realm—before someone else decides the Dragonlord is too busy in the North to notice."
Roberta was silent for a moment. Then she said, "The lords who came north with you will follow you south. So will half the Night's Watch, if you ask. And the wildlings… they saw you stand against the Night King. That kind of story does not fade."
Rhaegar exhaled, watching the cloud of his breath vanish into the cold air.
"Good," he said. "We are going to need every story we can get."
Far to the south, in the courts of the Free Cities and the halls of Braavos, ravens were already flying. News of the broken ice throne and the fallen Night King would reach them soon enough. Some would rejoice. Some would begin new calculations.
Rhaegar of House Targaryen, still seated on a ruined wall at the edge of the world, closed his eyes and allowed himself—just for a few hours—to rest.
The war against the Long Night was over.
The war for the dawn was about to begin.
