"Please put your writing utensils down, the mathematics portion of the exam has ended." A calm voice rang throughout the exam room.
With that statement, a series of clacks echoed as pencils were set down across the room.
"There will be a ten minute break before the English portion of the exam, so you may talk amongst yourselves or use the opportunity to use the restroom during this time." The proctor stated, before adding on a final note, "However, any discussions regarding the actual content of the exam is prohibited until after the exam is over and may result in the disqualification of your score if caught."
As the proctor finished the last of their necessary announcements, they made their way to the front of the room, sitting down on an elevated platform.
"Whew…"
Nejire wiped nonexistent sweat off her forehead, confident that she did pretty well on the mathematics exam, as the proctor announced the completion of the portion.
After all, it wouldn't do to be so bad at something that her best friend had helped her the most in.
Previously, Isshun had told her a few times that his Quirk functioned through formulas.
Before Isshun could begin to write even a quarter of the base formula, Nejire's brain had already blanked out. But that had only cemented the fact that her best friend was probably a math genius.
Still, after finishing her math exam, she couldn't help but feel a bit of pity for Isshun.
Having to do math way harder than the exam that she just finished every time that he wanted to use his Quirk was too pitiful.
At least for her she could just think something like 'Activate!' and her Quirk would start working.
If Isshun could read her thoughts right now, he would only roll his eyes in exasperation.
He wasn't 'solving' a formula, he was just inputting parameters and the 'result' was just teleportation.
Of course, any attempt at explanation was redundant.
She glanced to her left, to see the boy that was originally there, gone. Probably went to use the restroom. Glancing to her right, she saw Chihiro looking up at the roof with a blank expression on her face, as if her soul had left her.
"Are you okay?" Nejire asked, wondering if the exam really was hard enough to the point that even someone who looked fairly composed earlier was looking like they had their soul sucked out.
Chihiro turned her head, looking at Nejire with unfocused eyes.
"...I think I did okay…" She said after a few seconds of staring blankly at Nejire.
"That's good then!" Nejire nodded, but quickly changed topics.
"Wait, your Quirk! Can I ask more about it? Like…what else can it do?" Nejire asked.
"...Shoot." Chihiro answered, looking for topics to distance herself from the exam, because thinking about it only made her stress even more.
"Well, can you break your headband?" She asked curiously.
"Oh, you asked that earlier too, right?" Chihiro responded.
While such a question might come off as insensitive, she was only surprised at the suddenness of the question, rather than having a negative reaction towards it.
"Basically…" Chihiro started, but paused midway. "...On second thought, let me just show you."
Chihiro reached back up to the golden headband before taking it off her head and holding onto two opposite sides of the ring.
As she put even the smallest amount of force into it, with an audible poof! sound it lost solid form into a ring shaped gathering of small, shiny, golden clouds.
"Woaah!" Nejire marveled, watching as the golden cloud slowly gathered above Chihiro's head, condensing to reform the golden headband.
"Yep. I can technically break it, but not actually," she shrugged. "The headband has some weird rules that I haven't fully figured out yet."
Nejire clasped her hands together, before plastering an expression of pure curiosity and begging on her face. "Can I feel it?!"
"Uhh…" An awkward look appeared on Chihiro's face before she slowly nodded, reaching back up to her halo.
"May I have a go at it after, de gozaru?"
An unfamiliar voice entered the conversation.
Both Nejire and Chihiro turned their heads at the sudden interloper.
With her hands on her hips, the girl flashed a confident smile.
She had short, golden hair and dark orange eyes. Visible on her neck was a silver tattoo of a horse, which she displayed with pride. She gave off of the general vibe of a countryside girl, yet her speech was… archaic.
If someone asked Nejire her first impression of the new girl, she would say that she looked like a less… majestic version of Shun-chan.
"Um…" Chihiro looked at the new girl with a confused expression, yet before she could ask the important question, Nejire cut in.
"Who are you!?" She exclaimed, before automatically spitting out another question, "What's your name?"
"Haha!" The blonde girl raised her head, booming with confidence. "You ask me my name?! This humble one's name is Kishote Don de gozaru!"
"And what's with that 'de gozaru' talk?" Nejire asked. "Were you born in a samurai family?!" She theorized with curiosity.
"That's just how this one naturally speaks, de gozaru!" Don raised a hand to comb through her bangs, before opening her mouth to ask, "And may I ask the names of you two ladies, de gozaru?"
"Oh, my name's Hado Nejire, nice to meet you, Kishote-san!"
"It is an honor to meet you as well, Hado-dono." Don put the heels of her feet together before nodding her head at Nejire.
Now both Don and Nejire turned their heads at Chihiro for an introduction of her own.
"...Saiyuki Chihiro, nice to meet you." With Don's own display of a respectful nod, Chihiro gave a small nod of her own after introducing herself.
"Hmm!" Don's eyes brightened at Chihiro's reciprocation of the head nod and nodded at her in return. "It is an honor, Saiyuki-dono."
Her request about Chihiro's Quirk forgotten with a new addition into their small group, Nejire turned her attention to Don.
"What's with that horse tattoo on your neck?"
Chihiro turned to Nejire incredulously. She had thought this earlier, but she really was insensitive when it came to questions…
Yet, Nejire's expression only screamed 'I'm curious!', which was why Chihiro didn't have much of a bad impression of her despite questions which could be misunderstood as insensitive.
But it didn't seem like Don was offended either.
Yet, Don wasn't offended for a different reason.
Kishote Don was a child who had a chronic case of Chuunibyou (Eighth-Grader Syndrome).
And what do people with Chuunibyou like to do?
Obviously brag about their unique features.
And in a world where people's unique features were a major part of how they were treated, it wasn't a surprise that Chuunibyou was probably more widespread than one would assume.
"Haha, are you curious, Hado-dono!?" Don questioned with a satisfied smile on her face. After all, the main reason she revealed her horse tattoo so easily was because people would ask about it.
It was a perfect scenario where a person who wanted to be asked questions and a person who asked questions met.
"Mhm! I'm super curious!" Nejire agreed, only feeding into Don's wish in people being curious about her unique features(Quirks).
"Is that so?!" Don brightened with a smile that spanned her entire face, her excitement levels peaking. "Then I shall grant your wish, de gozaru!"
"This mark allows me to summon my beloved companion, Rocinante!"
Don exclaimed, waving a hand as if displaying a nonexistent product with a flourish, and combed through her hair with her other hand.
"Woahhhhh!" Nejire clapped at the dramatic display which seemed like it belonged in theaters, with Chihiro following with a more subdued clap, mainly because Don had gained the attention of a majority of the test takers with her exclamation, yet it didn't feel right to not clap just cause the looks were embarassing.
"Thank you, thank you," Don gave a small bow to Nejire and Chihiro.
"So who's Rocinante?" Nejire asked.
"...Hmm?" Don tilted her head, before realizing she didn't even specify who Rocinante even was.
"Oh, Rocinante is my beloved—"
"Will the examinees please return back to their desks," The proctor's voice echoed throughout the room, interrupting Don's sentence. "There is only a minute remaining of your break."
"...I shall continue after the next portion, Hado-dono." Don resignedly said, her demeanor visibly more subdued.
"Okay! Good luck, Kishote-san."
"You too, Hado-dono, Saiyuki-dono." Don nodded at the two, turning around.
Chihiro and Nejire watched as Don took a seat right behind Nejire.
'Eh, she wasn't even sitting that far away,' Chihiro inwardly complained. She thought with how downcast Don had become she sat a distance away, only for her to sit right behind Nejire.
Yet before she could point it out, the proctor continued.
"After this section, there will be another ten minute break."
The proctor repeated similar warnings and rules for the English portion of the exam.
"You will have forty five minutes to complete this portion! I will announce when only five minutes remain. You may now begin!"
