Ever since Paige's parents patched things up, it was like they were back on their honeymoon. The two of them were so wrapped up in each other that they barely had any time left for their youngest daughter.
Paige, meanwhile, had grown up under her mother's strict thumb. Now that she was hovering on the edge of her rebellious teenage years, she was practically itching for some freedom.
It was a win-win situation. Consequently, the process of transferring schools and moving out went off without a hitch.
Mike heard a commotion outside and headed out just in time to see the Swanson family pulling up, their pickup truck loaded down with suitcases and boxes.
"Mike, I really can't thank you enough for everything you did for Linda and me. Paige told us everything..." Barry said, clasping his wife's hand as he offered Mike a sincere thank you.
Before Mike's intervention, Barry and Linda's marriage had been on the brink of collapse. If it hadn't been for that romantic date Mike set up—the one that forced them to open up and rediscover why they fell in love in the first place—they'd likely be signing divorce papers by now.
In a very real sense, Mike's small act of kindness had saved a family.
"It was nothing, really. Paige did most of the heavy lifting," Mike said, glancing at the smiling young girl. He wasn't about to take all the credit for himself.
Setting up that date hadn't been much trouble for him, and seeing the couple looking so genuinely happy now made the effort more than worth it.
"No, that night meant the world to us..." Barry shared a look with his wife before pulling an elegant gift box from his pocket. "This is just a small token of our appreciation. Please, accept it."
The Swansons were clearly class acts. Mike might not have cared about a reward, but they weren't about to let his help go unacknowledged. Including the high-end fountain pen they gave him last Christmas, this was already their second major thank-you gift.
"Oh, wow..." Seeing how insistent they were, Mike smiled and accepted the gift.
Inside the box sat a vintage gold pocket watch, intricately crafted and polished to a mirror finish. It was obvious the Swansons had put a lot of thought into finding something special.
"What do you think, Mike? You like it?" Barry asked expectantly.
He had tracked down this antique through a specialized collector friend; it was the kind of piece you couldn't just find in a store. A fine pocket watch was a classic status symbol—the perfect accessory for a sharp guy like Mike.
"Thank you. It's beautiful. I love the craftsmanship," Mike said, running his thumb over the engravings.
"I'm glad to hear it." Seeing Mike's genuine reaction, Mr. Swanson beamed with pride. He looked around toward the house. "By the way, where's Connie? I haven't seen her yet."
"She's over at the neighbor's with George helping out with something. She should be back any minute," Mike explained.
"I see. Well, let's get Paige's gear inside first," Mr. Swanson said. "I'd like to take you all and the Coopers out for a nice lunch in a bit."
It was clear that with their new lease on life, the Swansons were making a real effort to build a bridge with Meemaw and the Cooper family. Since Paige was going to be staying here long-term, a big "family" dinner was the perfect way to kick things off.
Mike didn't argue with the social logic. They spent the next few minutes hauling Paige's personal belongings up to her new room. Throughout the move, the girl looked like she was walking on air, the smile never leaving her face.
Just as they finished and sat down to catch their breath in the living room, Meemaw walked in, looking a bit dusty and carrying a small basket of fresh eggs.
Seeing the Swansons, she greeted them warmly. "You folks picked a good day to visit! These are fresh from Brenda's coop. I was just about to whip up a massive farm-style breakfast for everyone."
Mr. Swanson chuckled and politely declined. "Save the eggs for next time, Connie. I'm treating everyone—including the Coopers—to lunch today."
Meemaw caught his drift immediately. She knew the importance of the gesture.
"Fair enough. Let me go get cleaned up; I'm a mess," she said with a laugh.
Everyone shared a knowing smile as she headed for the bathroom.
"By the way, George just got home. If you're inviting the whole crew, you'd better catch them before Mary starts cooking," Meemaw called back before closing the door.
"Right. I'll head over now," Mr. Swanson said. He and Linda headed across the street to the Cooper house.
With everyone else gone, it was just Mike and Paige in the living room. Without the "adults" around, the girl relaxed instantly.
She let out a massive yawn, stretched her arms wide, and flopped onto the soft sofa, rolling back and forth a few times like a happy cat. She was clearly over the moon to be here. In this moment, the composed, "child-prodigy" mask was completely gone.
"Thank you, Mike," she said, sitting up and smoothing out her rumpled clothes. She looked him in the eye, her expression turning serious.
The past six months had been an absolute roller coaster for her. The tension at home had been eating her alive; she had been inches away from a total burnout.
But at the most critical crossroad of her life, Mike had appeared. To her, he was like a lighthouse guiding her out of a storm.
"Things are going to be much better now," Mike said, feeling a bit of an ache for her. He'd seen how much she'd been struggling. Having that high an IQ meant she processed the stress of her parents' fighting far more deeply than a normal kid her age should have to.
Thankfully, that chapter was closed. Mike reached over and gave her head a playful, affectionate rub.
"Hey! You're messing up my hair," Paige complained with a giggle.
But she didn't pull away. Being here, feeling this safe... it was a pretty good feeling.

Across the street, the Swansons successfully recruited the Cooper clan. Barry, who wasn't exactly hurting for cash, vetoed George's suggestion of a casual seafood shack and instead drove everyone to a truly high-end steakhouse.
You get what you pay for, and the place was top-tier. Thanks to Paige, Meemaw and Mike got to live the high life for an afternoon.
"We're leaving Paige in your hands now. If anything comes up, don't hesitate to call us," Linda said after the meal. She was supporting her husband, who was a little tipsy, while she remained perfectly sober.
"Don't you worry, Linda. Mike and I will look after her like she's our own," Meemaw promised. She had always had a soft spot for the brilliant, sharp-witted girl.
Mary chimed in as well, promising to keep an eye on things from across the street.
"Thank you." Linda gave Paige one last motherly lecture on the side before she and Barry finally drove off.
"Alright, Paige. Let's get you home," Mike called out, his breath visible in the chilly air. Winter was technically ending, but the Texas air hadn't gotten the memo yet.
"Coming!" Paige shouted, a brilliant smile on her face as she hurried to catch up with him.
