My heart kicked hard against my ribs.
A walk. Outside. Not just out to the porch where I'd spent the last week watching the tree line like it might swallow me whole.
Since Callum found us, I hadn't left the cabin. I stood on the porch and watched Callum and Nora disappear into the woods every morning, their laughter floating back through the trees. But I'd never followed.
Seven days of pacing the same rooms, looking out the same windows, jumping at every sound that wasn't Callum or Nora. Seven days of fear crawling under my skin every time I thought about stepping beyond that invisible line I'd drawn around the cabin.
Because I knew that out there, the King's men were hunting. Out there, my scent could carry with the wind to the wrong nose. That one wrong step beyond the cabin's protection could end everything.
