Chapter 68 - CH 68: The Silence of Success

The Empress stood before them, her tiny frame belying a force of nature that had existed since the world was young. Her gaze swept over the group, pausing on Leo with a sharp intensity, as if she were peeling back the layers of his hidden identity.

''Welcome to the Heart of Evergreen. I am Athena Evergreen,'' she announced, her voice resonating with the forest itself.

Noel glanced at the others, caught in confusion about whether he should introduce himself too, but Hye-na bypassed all formalities. ''This entire journey is trial, isn't it?'' she asked, her voice steady.

Athena's smile was knowing. ''And what leads you to that conclusion?''

''The truth of our survival,'' Hye-na replied. ''If the entities here intended to kill us, we would be corpses. Every encounter was a calibrated test designed to filter for your successor.''

'A legacy trail,' Leo mused. Hye-na's intuition was razor-sharp. Every horror they had faced—the giant, the burning skulls—was a barrier meant to measure their worth, not just their strength.

Athena nodded, her eyes twinkling. ''To reach this sanctum, you endured the Trial of Betrayal at the gates. You faced the Trial of Courage against the bridge sentinel. And finally, you proved your Trial of Will to cross the threshold.''

Leo felt the weight of her words. They were survivors of a grand design. 'We are moving according to her rhythm.'

''We are here. We passed. Can we claim the legacy?'' Hye-na pushed.

The Empress tilted her head, her voice light yet heavy with authority. ''The legacy is within reach, but we must await the arrival of the other contenders.''

''You have to be kidding,'' Noel muttered. 'We nearly died at that gate just to get an edge.'

She let out a melodic chuckle. ''I understand your frustration. To reward your haste, I shall grant you an edge.'' With a flick of her fingers, the ancient tree above them bowed, offering fruit that shimmered like polished peaches. ''The Fruit of Clarity. It will synchronize your spirit with the atmosphere, allowing you to absorb aether at 300% of your normal capacity.''

Luna's eyes went wide. 'A three-fold increase? That is a literal shortcut through the ranks.'

Leo took a bite, and the effect was instantaneous. It felt as though a spiritual fog had been lifted from his senses. His pores seemed to open, and the aether in the air—pure and vibrant—began to cascade into his system like a torrential downpour.

As they settled onto the clover, Athena gestured to the surrounding air. "Discard your cores. They are clumsy tools. In this heart, the aether is as pure as the dawn. Simply breathe, and become.''

Leo entered a meditative state. For the first time, he wasn't hunting for power; it was seeking him. His rank surged, the numbers ticking upward with a speed that would have been impossible anywhere else.

43%... 44%...

Athena's gaze remained anchored to the legacy ring on Leo's finger, her ancient eyes narrowing. 'A complete enigma. He navigated every trial with terrifying precision, yet... it is a pity. That madwoman has already staked her claim on his soul. I can feel the resonance of her legacy the moment he stepped into my reality.'

'But perhaps not all is lost,' she mused, a small smile playing on her lips as she turned toward Hye-na, who was currently a vacuum for the surrounding aether.

The lords drifted into a deep meditative trance. This was a rare, divine opportunity to force their ranks upward. From the shadows of the emerald treeline, small forest spirits began to emerge, their wide eyes full of curiosity.

Athena chuckled softly. 'Go on,' she commanded silently. The creatures crept forward, perching on the lords' shoulders. A family of squirrels even took up residence in Noel's hair, seemingly unbothered by the power radiating from him.

Simultaneously, in the Trial of the Crown, Elias's faction battled through a gauntlet of lethal challenges. Though their numbers had dwindled, their morale remained unshaken—a testament to the dual presence of Elias Crowe and Emmi White.

The surviving men watched in silence as the pair dismantled every trap. Elias operated like a grandmaster, predicting mechanisms before they could even click into place. He was a strategist of the highest order. But it was Emmi who truly haunted them. She was a reaper on the battlefield; the more blood she spilled—including her own—the more her power surged. They had seen her nearly torn apart, only to stand fully healed within the span of a few breaths.

Silas, the man who had sold info about the Crimson Lord to secure a spot here, watched them with narrowed eyes. He clutched the stump of his missing arm, his pulse thrumming with a bitter, toxic need for vengeance. 'You discarded me like trash. Just you wait. I will make you crawl for what you did to me.'

The group moved through a spatial labyrinth designed to trap intruders in an infinite cycle of loops, yet Elias navigated the shifting corridors as if he had built them himself.

''Pick it up, Nerd. We're burning daylight here,'' Emmi complained, brushing a stray blonde lock behind her ear.

Elias's jaw tightened. 'My greatest mistake was partnering with this mindless barbarian,' he thought, taking a sharp right at the next junction.

The team followed in his wake. Silas seized the moment to sidle up to Elias. ''Sir, may I ask a question?''

Elias gave a sharp nod, desperate for any distraction from Emmi's voice. ''Is a legacy truly worth the lives we've lost to get here?'' Silas whispered.

''It is more than worth it,'' Elias replied, his voice dropping to a low, reverent tone. ''A legacy is the ultimate cheat code. It is as if a level 100 master decided to bestow every ounce of their power, their skills, and their very essence upon a novice. Sometimes,'' he glanced at Silas, ''they even pass on their own consciousness.''

Elias's fingers trembled with a sudden surge of avarice. The mere concept of such power made his pulse race. 'So this is why the top lords are so desperate to reach the Heart,' he realized.

'With that kind of power, even that arrogant Crimson Lord will fall,' Silas thought, his eyes gleaming with a dark, hungry light.

Emmi caught the look and felt a wave of revulsion. 'Greed is the shortest path to a shallow grave,' she thought. Her internal monologue was cut short as Elias came to a halt.

''We have arrived.''

Before them sat a massive, swirling vortex of energy. Emmi's face broke into a predatory grin. ''Finally. Let's see what this Empress is hiding.''

The swirling vortex of the portal spat Elias and his team out onto the soft, glowing grass of the Heart. They stumbled through, weapons drawn and lungs burning, their faces etched with the jagged adrenaline of survivors who had finally reached the finish line.

Elias stepped forward, a triumphant grin beginning to form on his soot-stained face. ''We made it!'' he barked, his voice cracking with exhaustion and pride.

But the shout died in his throat as his eyes adjusted to the brilliant emerald light of the clearing.

Elias stood there, his chest heaving. He expected to find a boss monster or a complicated puzzle. Instead, he saw a scene that looked like a painting of a peaceful forest. And right in the middle of it was Leo's group.

They weren't fighting. They weren't even standing.

Leo, Hye-na, Luna, and Noel were all sitting cross-legged on the grass, their eyes closed in deep meditation. A soft green glow was coming off their skin, and the air around them seemed to shimmer with power. Noel had a family of squirrels nesting in his messy hair, and a small deer was sniffing at Luna's hand.

They looked like they had been there for hours.

''What is this?'' Emmi hissed, stepping up beside Elias. She wiped a smudge of blood from her cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief. ''We almost died in that maze. We sacrificed people to get here fast!''

Silas pushed his way to the front, his one remaining hand shaking as he pointed at Leo. ''They're... they're just sitting there. How are they already here?''
