Chapter 76 - CH 76: The Gilded Disorder

Leo stood rooted, the suffocating weight of Verdict's presence making him feel as though he were standing before a supreme magistrate, awaiting a final judgment. He reached out through their mental link. 'Malphas, do you sense the weight of this?'

Malphas's gaze sharpened into a cold crimson. He manifested a veil of blood aura around Leo to neutralize the involuntary pressure bleeding from the head maid. ''I do, my Lord. She is struggling to stabilize her power within her current rank, causing her essence to overflow. Her strength is undeniable.''

The denizens of the stronghold gathered in a hushed circle. Captain Goblin's eyes swept over the Triune maids before landing on the spindly stewards. He flexed a massive bicep, his expression one of pure disdain. ''Pathetic.''

Sensing the shift in the atmosphere as Malphas shielded Leo, Verdict realized her oversight. She dropped to one knee with practiced elegance. ''Forgive my lack of control, Master. I am still acclimating to the limitations of this degraded rank.''

Behind her, the other maids knelt instantly, their gazes fixed on the floor.

''Rise,'' Leo commanded, a smirk playing on his lips. The sheer quality of the summons confirmed that his investment had been more than worth it. However, before he could speak, the sky was torn asunder by a falling streak of light.

Before Malphas could even register the threat, four distinct arcane barriers shimmered into existence around Leo, repelling every stray particle of dust. As the crater settled, Z leaped from the shadows and perched on Verdict's shoulder.

Luna watched the scene with a look of pure, simmering envy. 'How does he manage to summon world-class beauties every single time?'

''A Prime Homunculus in the service of a fledgling Lord. How very intriguing,'' Z remarked, her voice dripping with playful malice.

In an instant, the courtyard became a pressure cooker. Frost channeled a swirling vortex of crystalline ice, while Edict flourished a twin-headed glaive, its runic blades pulsing with a lethal white light. Gleam initially looked bewildered, but as Z leveled a lazy, soul-crushing gaze at them, the trio felt as if they were standing in the heart of a burning abyss.

Edict's grip tightened on her weapon, and the air around Frost dropped to sub-zero temperatures. Gleam's cheerful facade crumbled, replaced by a manic, predatory grin that suggested she was relishing the challenge.

Leo signaled Malphas to remain a spectator. He was eager to gauge the limits of his new household's strength.

''Regardless of your station, I must insist you cease this provocation. And you three, do not forget yourselves in the Master's presence,'' Verdict said, her voice ringing out like a sovereign decree. With a simple word, the localized reality seemed to shift, and Z's oppressive aura vanished.

The Triune maids recoiled and resumed their defensive stances. Z's violet eyes flashed with genuine excitement. ''Haha! No wonder your race was hunted to near extinction. But...'' She bared her teeth. ''Do you truly believe your words carry weight with me?''

The light in the courtyard dimmed as a jagged rift in space tore open behind Z, and a gargantuan, obsidian-clawed hand began to force its way into reality. Leo let out a low whistle. Despite the escalating void energy, the shields held firm. While the Triune barriers began to fracture, Verdict's shield remained a flawless, unyielding mirror.

''Z,'' Selene's voice cut through the tension like a blade of ice.

The entity flinched, the void-claw dissolving back into shadow. ''Hmph. Always dampening my spirits,'' Z hissed, vanishing back toward the barracks in a blur of motion.

The crowd of ogres and humans parted like a dark sea for Selene. Her presence was a cold reminder of the power she had displayed during her own arrival. She approached Verdict, her violet hair swaying, and offered a curt nod of respect.

Undetected by the others, the Grand Verdant Collective had staged a raid on the kitchen. Huddled in the shadows, they were in a state of frantic hunger.

''We should have made a meal of that red goblin,'' one steward grumbled, poking through empty crates.

''Silence! Look what I have procured!'' another whispered, emerging from the gloom with several plates of steaming meat and soup.

''A feast!'' they cheered in unison, dividing the spoils with greedy efficiency.

''Where was this hidden?''

The thief chuckled, a glint of mischief in his golden eyes. ''Left unattended on a dining table in one of the houses. A gift from a fool, no doubt.''

As they laughed over their stolen meal, Leo made his way toward the Lord's Hall, his mind reeling. 'I set out to find laborers and ended up with a tabloid-worthy entourage. These tokens were more chaotic than the trial itself,' he thought.

Verdict and her sisters followed in a silent, perfect line, while Luna sneaked off to finish her missing breakfast.

As Leo settled onto his throne, the Kingfall Armor pulsed with a faint, regal light. Verdict stood at the base of the stairs, her gaze already dissecting the room's flaws.

''Master,'' Verdict began. ''This domain is a landscape of untapped potential and staggering disorder. The logistics are tangled, and the staff is undisciplined. Do I have your permission to rectify this immediately?''

'A maid to the core,' Leo mused. ''Go ahead, Verdict. Just stay wary of that little devil. She is unpredictable.''

Verdict bowed, her eyes flashing with a competitive glint. ''Do not worry, Master. I am more than capable of managing a little devil.''

Outside, the peace was shattered by a scream of pure fury. Luna came charging through the courtyard, her face flushed with anger.

''Who stole my breakfast!'' Luna bellowed. ''I turned my back for a single second, and my meal vanished!''

Leo sighed at the chaotic start to the morning. Sensing his annoyance, Verdict gave a sharp order. ''Gleam, handle the situation.''

Gleam's boredom vanished instantly. ''With pleasure!'' She bolted outside.

''My steak! My soup! Even the plate was licked clean!'' Luna fumed, her voice reaching a crescendo. ''Ren, find the bastard responsible!''

Inside the kitchen, the stewards froze. The sound of Luna's rage vibrated through their shared consciousness.

''The loud one seems quite formidable,'' the first steward whispered, trembling.

''We are in grave danger,'' another added.

''The Grand Verdant Collective may have... miscalculated,'' the third squeaked.

The kitchen door creaked open. Expecting an angry warrior, the stewards were surprised to see Gleam walking in with a sweet, innocent smile.

''She does not look dangerous,'' one steward noted, his ears twitching with hope.

''Hehe... perhaps the crisis has passed,'' they said, standing up with relief.

Gleam stood before them, her smile widening in a way that didn't reach her eyes. ''My, my. Our little thieves are certainly cocky.''

''Cocky... Cock?'' the steward puzzled.

Gleam's eyes flashed with a predatory light. One steward suddenly let out a yelp. ''KEK! Brother, something just touched my backside!''

Dozens of energy hands materialized from the air, surrounding them in a shimmering, inescapable cage.

The translucent energy hands tightened their grip, hoisting the five members of the Collective into the air. They kicked and squirmed, their shared consciousness erupting into a frantic, high-pitched debate that only they could fully understand.

''Wait! Wait! We are the Grand Verdant Collective! We are essential personnel!'' one steward shrieked, his voice cracking.

Gleam giggled, her eyes sparkling with a dangerous light. ''Essential for what? Testing the Master's patience? Or maybe testing how much of a beating you can take before you pop?''

Suddenly, the door flew open again. Luna was standing there, looking absolutely furious. Behind her, Ren was already half-pulling her daggers out, her shadow flickering all over the walls.

''Found them,'' Luna said, pointing at the floating stewards. ''I can literally smell my soup on them. They ate everything!''

Ren moved instantly, putting a blade right against the throat of the one who stole the plates. The steward turned a sickly shade of light green.

''It was a mistake!'' the stewards cried out. ''We thought the house was just a place where free food appeared!''

''That was my house!'' Luna yelled back.

Gleam stepped between Luna and the stewards, though she didn't look like she was protecting them. She looked like she was claiming her prey. ''Now, now, Lady Luna. The Head Maid has already passed judgment. These... things... belong to the Master's household now. Their punishment must be official.''

Luna exhaled a breath of pure frustration, looking between Gleam and the trembling stewards. ''And what does your Head Maid consider a fitting punishment for grand theft breakfast?''

Gleam's crystalline eyes glowed with an inner light. ''A full cycle of manual labor under my personal supervision. And perhaps a few 'calibration' shocks to ensure they learn the difference between an altar and a private residence.''

Back in the Lord's Hall, Leo could hear the distant shouting and the strange, rhythmic thumping of the stewards being hauled out toward the southern wall. He leaned his head on his hand, watching Verdict as she began to manifest small, glowing scrolls in the air, detailing the inventory of the entire stronghold.

'I thought I was building an army,' Leo thought, watching the silver-haired Frost stand like an icy statue near the door. 'But I ended up with a house full of chaos.'

Verdict looked up from her scrolls, her golden eyes meeting his. ''Do not worry, Master. By tomorrow morning, the Grand Verdant Collective will be the most disciplined maintenance crew this world has ever seen. Or they will be fertilizer for the garden. Either outcome is efficient.''

Leo let out a long, weary sigh. ''I believe you, Verdict. Just make sure someone prepares a double portion for Luna. I'd rather not have her burning down the kitchen before you have a chance to clean it.''

''It is already done, my Lord,'' Verdict replied, her eyes flashing with the cold, efficient light of a Prime Homunculus.
